Great NVR with some drawbacks

I'm a big fan of wired security cameras that record to local storage. I've owned a set of 720p older cameras for going on 10 years now and felt like it was getting time to upgrade. I came across this Amlink NVR and thought it would be a great base to start a new system. I grabbed this NVR and 4 cameras to try.

The NVR arrives nicely protected in its box, it comes with the NVR, an Ethernet cable, HDD SATA and power cables, a mouse, and some materials for reading. Setup was pretty straightforward, plugging the cameras in was a breeze and they were automatically detected and started showing in the system. I've had 4 cameras running at once without issue and without a separate POE switch, so the nvr does perfectly fine handling the POE alone.

I set up my network connection and got the app working, but had some issues with my more modern router. The app kept failing to connect to my cameras, so I ended up finding an older router to connect everything to. This finally made the app work and after the initial setup, I was able to go back to my usual router just fine.

The downside of this is that it doesn't include a HDD for storage, for how steep it costs I would've hoped it would've came with a HDD. I understand that it's probably due to current prices.

Once everything was set up, it was one of the more intuitive camera systems I've used. The interface is easy to navigate, and while it has some advanced options, you don't really need to mess with them unless you want to. The app can be a bit laggy when connecting to cameras, but that might just be the network. The alert functionality works great and can send you push notifications when it detects people or vehicles, and it does a great job of determining what it is looking at.

For ease of use and quality, this just works and I recommend it. If it would have came with storage included, I'd probably have given it 5 stars.

Quick and easy to get going. Has advanced features to fine tune over time. Flexible installation.

This 8 channel AI NVR makes it easy to centralize recording and management of a home camera system.

This comes with the NVR, power cord, a network cable, mouse, SATA and power cable for the internal drive, mounting screws for a 3.5" drive, adhesive feet, and a quick start guide.

The NVR is relatively compact and has a metal case. It measures approximately 10.3" by 9.1" by 1.7". I weighed it at 33.12 ounces without a drive installed. On the front are 3 light indicators for HDD, NET, and PWR. There's a USB port on the front. On the back is the DC power in, 8 RJ45 ports, network in, another USB port, audio ports, a VGA and HDMI out. To install a drive you need to remove the top cover which is removed by removing the top two screws on the back side and then sliding the cover backwards slightly and then you can lift it up. There are holes for mounting a 3.5" or 2.5" drive on the case. The included screws fit a 3.5" drive. A neat feature for drive installation is 2 of the 4 holes are keyed such that you can start your screws and not tighten them and then put them through the large opening and slide the drive into place making it easy to get it aligned right. Then tighten all the screws from the bottom of the case. Be sure to connect the SATA and power cables to the drive and board while installing the drive.

For setting up the NVR you need to install the drive, connect power and cameras, and you'll need a mouse for the menus. The right mouse button is used as the back button for going up a level within the menus. I would suggest attaching a keyboard as well as it makes it easier to type passwords or IP addresses however you can use the on-screen keyboard with the mouse. The initial setup process goes through setting region, time, a password and optional pattern, and adding the cameras. I tested this with cameras both attached through the network ports on the NVR as well as a camera on my local network and both worked fine.

After the initial setup there's a lot of features within the NVR that can be configured. For enabling human and vehicle AI detection that's done through the camera event menu. You can set recording schedules and event schedules and what event responses you want with options for notifications or siren.

For accessing the cameras and footage you can do so on the NVR directly with an attached screen, through a web interface, and through a mobile app. Each option seems to have it's pros and cons. From a computer I like using the web interface as it gives me my full size screen and keyboard to view footage or configure settings.

This NVR is quick to get up and running. And has features and configuration options to fine tune how your cameras work.

Skip the subscriptions and enjoy a higher level experience

I got this with a POE camera for my security system. Started with my front door/drive way. I love that there is no subscription you have to pay for! This is set up and ready to for up to 8 camera. You can stream it in real time, or have it record when you're not there. It is a POE, smart NVR and is set up for AI cams. It is ready to record with a 20TB storage! Like the cameras, you can set it to record everything or only people and vehicles. You can stream in real time, watch it on your phone or a screen hooked to the device, and utilize the 2 way communication. Or there's the playback/recorded feature. I really like this system. I will be getting more cameras, and they are basically plug and play to the box and protect all my entry ways. Honesty, the only one I have left is my back door. It happens to be in a fully fenced yard with very large dogs. I would and do recommend this system to everyone I know. It saves so much money without having to pay for the subscriptions.

I’ve been using this AMLINK 12MP 8-channel AI NVR, and it handles multiple cameras smoothly without lag. The 8-port PoE design makes installation simple, cutting down on extra wiring and setup time. Video quality is excellent when paired with high-resolution cameras, and the AI features like human and vehicle detection help reduce unnecessary alerts.

The interface is straightforward to navigate, and it runs consistently without hiccups. Adding a hard drive is simple, and the large storage support is great for longer recording periods. A solid choice for anyone building or upgrading a home or business surveillance system.

Top tier security performance

I am incredibly impressed with this amlink 12MPk 8CH AI NVR because it handles high-resolution footage without any stuttering or lag during playback. The Human Detection and Vehicle Detection features are pinpoint accurate and have significantly reduced the number of false alerts I get on my phone compared to my old system. I love that it supports 8 x 12MP IP cameras over the 8-Port PoE setup which made the physical installation as simple as running a single Ethernet cable to each camera location. Being able to install a 20TB HDD means I can keep weeks of high-quality recordings stored locally without needing a cloud subscription. This unit is a powerhouse for anyone looking to build a professional-grade surveillance system at home

Powerful and Easy-to-Configure NVR With Strong PoE Performance

I picked up this AMLINK 8-channel AI NVR with built-in PoE ports mainly for a surveillance setup, and overall, the system works very well once configured.

The PoE outputs provide strong voltage and wattage delivery, which helps support higher-powered cameras without additional injectors. The system itself feels responsive and relatively easy to configure compared to some more complicated NVR systems.

The AI features, such as human and vehicle detection, are useful additions, and the network performance feels stable during operation. One important thing to note is that the hard drive is not included, which significantly increases the total setup cost. Cameras are also sold separately.

The unit feels well ventilated and solidly built, and the interface is manageable even for users without advanced networking experience. Compared to cheaper NVRs, this one offers better PoE performance and an easier overall setup.

In terms of value for the money, it feels somewhat expensive considering the lack of included storage or cameras, but the system quality and performance are very good.

Overall, a powerful and reliable NVR system with strong PoE capability and good AI features, just expect additional costs for storage and cameras.
