Amazing work by Kwame! The research was on point for this book. From the local names to the language and sequence of events, I inhaled the book. The emotion was raw and the joy was exhilarating. The characters felt real and the historical context was in sync. The book was unputdownable. Thanks to Kwame for providing his readers with a window into a world that is not so familiar to others.

As a reader, I loved this book. I feel that it brilliantly captures the innocence of children with the harsh reality of the world outside their bubble.
Kofi is the youngest brother. The kid being bullied. His love for his family is evident in the story. I felt that Kwame has written a tale that is delicate around the issues in 1860, yet shares how everyone had a hand in the slave trade.
Great book! I found that this is the best start to a trilogy that will explore Kofi’s journey from his village to the US along the middle passage.
The saddest part for me is when Kofi finally sees the ocean. It is as beautiful as he imagined.
