Premium features in a more compact body

This is a great little speedlite. It is significantly smaller and lighter than my V1 and V1pro. This makes it less cumbersome to carry around during long event shoots. It features the preferred round head found in the V1 series that gives a much better light profile for me.

The V1 Mid has a new display with a much better user interface than the V1 and V1pro series. This makes the speedlite feel light years over the previous models even with its lower overall output. For me, the specs are irrelevant when the tool is cumbersome or intuitive. What matters to me is how it performs in practical use cases and this is a much better flash for what i do than the brighter, larger, heavier V1 and V1pro.

The battery gives you a ridiculous amount of full power flashes and seeing how i never use any flash at full power other than testing it, this thing could possibly give me upwards to 1000 shots before completely depleting the battery. This new style battery has a built in usb-c charger than doesn’t require you to pack around a dedicated charging dock. You can charge the battery while it is installed in the flash or keep spares and charge them via power bank as you continue to shoot.

TTL and HSS are the only real modes that i use and both of these modes function perfectly. I used to never be a fan of TTL because my exposure levels would be all over the place but the improvements Godox has made for the way their units handle TTL makes it almost flawless and very consistent. I love manual as well as it allows me to get a bit more creative and gives me full control. The V1 mid also has a built in zoom to control the light profile and the edges of the light has smooth gradients/fall off that doesn’t look as distracting or artificial as old or less advanced flashes. The round head is also capable of handling any of my round head attachments from Godox and other brands making it very versatile in light modification. it has a built in modeling light that is located within the head. This can be very useful for direct flash but if you like to bounce light, it isn’t as effective as the V1pro.

A versatile and highly reliable flash compatible with Sony

The Godox V1mid S Speedlight flash for Sony offers excellent performance. Its round head provides natural and even lighting, perfect for portraits and events. The TTL system works precisely, automatically adjusting exposure, saving time when speed is essential. The HSS function, which goes up to 1/8000s, is excellent for fashion runway work, and global shutter sync expands creative possibilities for action photography. Its recycle time is fast and consistent, even at maximum power, and the battery life allows for over 600 flashes per charge, enough for long sessions. A USB-C port lets me charge the battery directly from the flash, which is very convenient. This V1mid operates stably and doesn't overheat. I highly recommend it; it's a very complete and reliable flash that provides power, versatility, and good light quality.

Round head, square deal

There's a piece of gear in every photographer's bag that earns its spot not because it's the most impressive thing in there, but because it's the thing you reach for without thinking. For me that's always been a speedlight — the light that's small enough to live in the bag permanently and capable enough that I'm not annoyed when it's the only thing I brought. The V1 Mid S has easily become that light.

The headline is the round head, and it's not a gimmick. A round source wraps light a little more naturally than the rectangular fresnel on most speedlights, and the bounce off a ceiling or a wall just looks nicer — softer falloff, no hard rectangular hotspot to fight. Bare on-camera it's still a speedlight, physics being physics.

Output is 55Ws, which is — fittingly — middle of the road; it's more powerful than a compact flash unit. but it's less than the original V1's ~76Ws and well under the Profoto A1 or Godox AD100 tier @ ≈100Ws, but it covers the way most people actually use one of these: on-camera fill, bounced, or off-camera strobist-style on a stand. Where you'll feel the ceiling is HSS wide open in bright ambient, or trying to punch through a doubled-up modifier at distance. For that I reach for an AD100 Pro II or AD300 Pro II instead. As the always-in-the-bag light, 55Ws is plenty. The 24–105mm zoom is a genuine upgrade over the original V1's 28mm wide end — in tight venues that extra spread matters — and 1.7s recycle with 650+ full-power pops on the USB-C-charged VB22 holds up through a real shoot.

The 2-inch OLED touchscreen is what makes this feel like a 2026 product instead of a 2018 one. Mode, group, power, and wireless role are all a tap away instead of buried behind a button-and-dial code you memorize and immediately forget. Flipping between on-camera TTL, off-camera receiver, and sender/trigger modes is fast enough that I stopped thinking about it within the first few minutes — which is about the highest compliment I can pay a flash UI.

On my Sony A1, TTL metering is accurate and the TTL-to-manual handoff is clean, with HSS running to 1/8000s without drama. The one nit is Sony's multi-interface shoe — the contacts on the leading edge make it a touch finickier to seat than a Canon or Nikon hot shoe. Minor, but you learn to give it a deliberate slide.

The round head is compatible with the AK-R1 magnetic modifier ecosystem — dome, grids, gels, snoot — and, as a bonus, Profoto Clic modifiers seat on it too if you've got any in the kit. And the 2.4G X system integration is excellent: trigger it with an X3 or X3 Pro you're already running, or let it act as the trigger itself for your AD-series or other V- series lights. If you're already in the Godox ecosystem, it drops right in.

At around $179, this is the speedlight I'd hand any Sony shooter who wants pro-grade TTL without writing Sony a $600 check for the HVL-F60RM2. If you're already in the Godox system, it's an obvious add. If you're not, it's a remarkably inexpensive and painless way in.

Excellent Flash with Great Light Quality and Easy Controls

I own both the Godox V1 and the V860III, and after using them side by side I have been very impressed with the V1. The round flash head produces a pleasing quality of light and seems to create smoother shadow transitions compared to traditional rectangular speedlights. The flash is powerful, recycles quickly, and has had no trouble keeping up during portrait sessions.

The touchscreen-style interface and controls are easy to navigate, making adjustments fast while shooting. I also like that it uses a rechargeable battery rather than disposable AAs, which saves money over time and provides excellent battery life.

Another feature I appreciate is compatibility with Godox's magnetic accessory system, allowing modifiers to be attached quickly when needed. The included storage pouch is a nice addition and helps protect the flash during transport.

Build quality feels solid, the flash balances well on my Sony camera, and overall it has performed exactly as expected. While there are less expensive options available, the combination of light quality, convenience, battery performance, and expandability makes the V1 a great value for photographers looking to step up their lighting kit.

Highly recommended.

Godox dependability for Sony

Right out of the gate — this light is fully compatible with the Sony system. I have it here on a Sony body and it paired up immediately. The TTL works flawlessly and that's honestly what you want to hear first. You don't want to be troubleshooting compatibility at an event. With the V1 Mid on a Sony, you're not doing that.

The form factor on this thing is really well thought out. It's smaller and lighter than the V1 which if you've shot with that unit all day you know exactly why that matters. But Godox didn't cut corners to get there. You still have the round head, you still have full magnetic modifier compatibility with the AK-R1 attachments, and you still have the full Godox feature set. This is not a stripped down version of anything — it's just a smarter size.

Control options give you TTL, Manual, and Multi mode. For Sony shooters doing event and wedding work, the TTL integration is smooth and responsive. The menus are intuitive and you can work through them with one hand while you're moving which is exactly how it needs to be when you're in the middle of a reception and things are happening fast.

For event photography this light delivers. It's a speedlight so direct sunlight is not its battlefield, but put it in a reception hall, a corporate dinner, a portrait session indoors — and it performs beautifully. Battery life is one of the real strengths here. You're going to get through a full event on a single charge more often than not. Just remember the battery charges outside the unit — pull it, charge it, put it back. The USB-C port on the body is strictly for firmware. Pick up an extra VB22 and you'll never have to think about it mid-shoot.

The Godox 2.4GHz system is where this light separates itself from the competition. Whether you're running it as a transmitter or dropping it into a receiver role, it integrates seamlessly with the rest of the Godox ecosystem. If you're a Sony shooter who's already invested in Godox triggers and lights, the V1 Mid slots right in without any reconfiguration headaches. Commander mode with multiple groups means you can build out a full lighting setup and control all of it from the camera position. The channel and group flexibility — A through F, 0 through 9, plus ID — gives you room to grow into some seriously complex setups if that's where your work takes you.

Construction feels solid. The slide latch locks onto the Sony hot shoe reliably and hasn't given me any grief. It feels sturdy without feeling heavy, which is the balance you want in a speedlight you're going to carry all day.

At 55W the V1 Mid hits a really useful power level. Enough output to do real work, small enough that it doesn't throw off the balance of the camera. For Sony shooters looking for a capable, portable, fully-featured speedlight that plays nicely with everything else in the Godox lineup — this is a very easy recommendation.

All in all, an awesome flash.

Excellent travel flash / light

This is a very nice flash / light for cameras. It is professionally packaged and seems sturdy and durable, The material it is made is top notch and comes wit a jazzy looking carry case.

The light itself is very bright and the screen is a touch screen. Overall an excellent product as usual from Godox.

highly recommend!
