Really compact , bright COB light with built in battery
The PULUZ Portable Video Light, has a built in battery and 60 Watts COB light in a very compact size.
The color temperature and the brightness can be varied from the rear of the light.
An LCD displays both the color temperature and power and battery bars briefly during use.
The light comes with a 'mini Bowens' reflector and silicone diffuser dome.
The Mini reflector gives an even circle of light without obvious center hotspot.
The reflector is described as mini Bowens . It is not compatible with other 'mini Bowens' reflectors on similar devices from other manufactures .
Full size Bowens was a useful industry standard mount and allowed the use of standard reflectors, soft-boxes and other light modifiers.
I have tested three different manufactures mini Bowens accessories and they are all manufacture specific and not interchangeable. This is a significant limitation of all the video lights I have tried including this PULUZ light.
I really like that this has a battery built in to the small body size making it really portable.
The battery charges via USB-C which is excellent.
However, on my unit the light would only charge using the supplied USB-C to USB-A cable and not any of my many USB-C to USB-C cables.
Closer inspection showed that the supplied cable had a slightly longer USB-C connector end than my USB-C to USB-C cables and that the USB-C socket on the light was significantly recessed where it rests against a moulded lip in the housing. I can not confirm if this is an assembly issue with my unit or a design issue but it limits the ability to charge this light from any available source or with any cable, with my unit at least.
This is disappointing because the Puluz light can actually run from external power too, which would make it super useful for longer studio sessions.
In use , the fan is always on but I did not find this distracting.
The underside of the light has a standard screw mount and also two small holes for mounting plates with anti rotation pegs.
The handle supplied does not have the anti-rotation pegs or an umbrella hole.
It is difficult to compare brightness specifications so I used a flash meter held 5ft (60 inches) from the light and got the following readings ISO 800, F2.0, 1/160sec for a correct exposure in a dark room.
There are also some inbuilt 'flashing' effects.
Summary:
Pros
Really like the compact size, the built in battery and the bright output
Cons
Manufacture specific 'mini-Bowens' mount
Issue with standard USB-C cable compatibility (on my unit?)
Price at $60 is excellent for a 60W unit with built in battery and therefore recommended
