Absolutely not brand new. Came torn, wrinkled, sticky, and some black stuff stuck to it.

My wife loved reading McCloskey's Blueberries for Sal to our kids when they were little. We weren't aware of Homer Price, which would also make for fun reading for kids as well.
McCloskey's illustrations are delightful. Oh, one thing: in the first chapter ("The Case of the Sensational Scent") there are four robbers. Yet, in the scene where they are all in one bed, the illustration shows five robbers. I wonder why...

Robert McCloskey is one of the great authors of books for children and adolescents. This is one of his best. The fact that I was able to purchase a used copy with ease was a source of considerable joy. This is a book set in the time when sprawl was about to become the American dilemma, combining rigid stratification, allegiance to a growingly-unaffordable commuter economy and implicit racism, setting a global pattern which has made lethal warming a reality. Homer is a nice kid at the beginning of an era that would have tested his patience and most likely made him a charter member of the Arcade Fire Fan Club.

set in a time when having a shunk for a pet was OK, when fried chicken and doughnuts came with every meal and a small town was a safe place to live. Where magazines cost a dime, the sheriff was somebody you could trust and you could still burn leaves! A town of doughnut making machines, mouse traps that don't harm the mice and no lynchings.
For ages 9 and up, a great book for boys and girls. If they, or you, enjoyed it I would also suggest getting 'Centerburg Tales', which has more stories on Homer Price and the folks of Centerburg. Frankly, there is no way to give this book a bad review! Homer Price by Robert McCloskey was first published in 1943 and my was printed in 1971. The year of my birth. It ended up a library book in the Learning Center in Whitman Elementary School in Litteton Colorado. This author is somewhat famous. He also wrote Blueberries For Sal and Make Way for Ducklings. So you know him even if you have not read this book.
Read this book. Five out of five!
