Works Well. Sounds Good.

The CDDH950P works as Sharp says it does. It plays radio, cassettes, CDs, MP3 CDs, and MP3s on flash drives. I don't have an ipod so can't attest to that. Download the manual from the Sharp web site and look through it carefully. It is neither compact nor particularly large.

It does many things, but doesn't do anything particularly well. It holds 5 CDs, but disc changes are slow and noisy. MP3s on a flash drive can be programmed, but playlists cannot be saved. Stereo FM sounds good, and one can choose monaural or stereo, but reception is nothing special. There are no bookmarks for listening to audio books. The cassette mechanism has auto-shutoff, but has no counter and will not record. Cassette wow and flutter is noticeable (especially acoustic guitar), but would be acceptable to many, IMO. There are no settings for high bias or dolby.

It sounds like a $200 stereo. My guess is that most people who listen to 128kbps music MP3s will be happy. People who are accustomed to high fidelity component systems (are annoyed by 192kbps MP3s?) might be dissatisfied. Many people, casual listeners, including my family members and most of my friends, will think that it sounds good but not great in the typical family room.

One can control bass and treble, but only with the remote, not with the amplifier unit. There are important capabilities that can only be controlled with the remote. Losing the remote would be a huge bummer.

There is one problem with the CDDH950P that is inexcusable... non-standard speaker jacks.

(uploaded a pic)

Apparently the unusual jacks are uncommon. Thus, one cannot easily extend the short speaker wires. To locate the speakers over 3 feet away from the amplifier unit, one must lengthen the wires by cutting and inserting additional wire.

Let's say that you wish to use the CDDH950P to amplify a large screen TV, and put speakers on each side of the screen. In that case, either the amplifier unit must be centered immediately above or below the TV, or one must cut and extend a short speaker wire. If you wish to put a speaker on each side of your bed... get out the wire strippers.

Does cutting and lengthening the speaker wire void the warrantee? Don't know. If anyone finds a source for the jacks/plugs that would be needed to make speaker extension wires, please post here. Thanks.

I'm satisfied with this unit. It's fine for my bedroom, though a bit large. For <$200, it sounds good and does do a lot.
