Definitely not your average webcam

So this thing is a BEAST. The quality and specs are impressive, but wow, it’s heavy! I had hoped it could work for remote office use (video calls, Zoom meetings, the usual), but this is not that kind of webcam. It’s built for serious machine vision or professional videography setups, not casual desk use. It’s clear now that this model is designed for more advanced setups, and there’s no way to safely perch this tank of a camera on a laptop or monitor. You absolutely need a tripod or some kind of sturdy mount to use it properly.

That said, the build quality is solid, and I have no doubt it performs well for the right application. The materials feel professional grade, and it looks like it could survive a drop from orbit. It just wasn’t the right fit for our needs, but it’s definitely an impressive piece of tech for those who know how to use it.

Very cool

Picture quality is really good. Heavy camera and long cord. Compact and nice. Plug and play super easy to use and works out the box.

Fun look

I probably don't know enough about cameras to make good use of this. It's a bit more complicated than a point and shoot which is what I'm used to, so I should have looked at it closer before ordering.

It has such a cool look to it. It's like a combo of old and new technology. Believe it or not I had an old "Brownie" camera as a child that someone gave me. It was really old at the time but I had fun with it. But it was mostly just a novelty and not really used for picture taking.

The square shape of this brought back that memory.

I have a person who is really good with cameras and this might be right up his alley.

He'll appreciate it as a gift, I'm sure.

Excellent project camera

This 8MP 4K USB camera is excellent for the price. Its perfect for all kinds of projects with Raspberry Pi, machine learning, vehicle PCs, and robotics. The adjustable 2.8–12mm varifocal lens makes it easy to dial in the right field of view. Whether you need wide coverage or a closer zoomed in look view. Image quality is solid sharp and clear in good light, though like most small sensors it struggles a bit in low light. The camera does its job well, and drivers worked right away on Windows 11 and Parrot Linux without hunting down special software.

Build quality is solid but the housing feels more like a hobbyist tool than a polished webcam, which i prefer. I have 2 of these types of cameras, i installed 1 in my jeep and im using the other in a robotics project. This one is a handy camera that delivers UHD resolution at a very fair price, but if you’re expecting flawless autofocus or pro level optics you may want to look elsewhere. I think calling this a "webcam" might be confusing for some people. I think a more accurate name would be a usb project camera or something like that.

False and misleading titles and descriptions.

I was excited to try out this camera, and even had a wall mount ready for it. However, upon my first test, I discovered that the image quality is horrible and the frame rate is extremely choppy, maxing out around 15fps. I tried several software programs that could access all of the resolutions and frame rates the camera supports, and even though I selected some that claimed to be 30fps, the resulting image quality was never better than 15fps.

I selected the 8MB version, thinking it would be better quality. Still, the manufacturer responded to me, telling me I chose the wrong camera and that the 2MB version has better video quality. The video this camera supports is only 4:3 and not 16:9, as stated before. Additionally, the 1024x768 resolution at 30fps is not actually 30fps.

The descriptions for the variations of these cameras are confusing, and I definitely do not believe any of them are accurate or true to the camera’s capabilities. As a still camera, this 8MB camera cannot capture an image larger than 1.4 megapixels, at least not using any software I tried.

It is a very nicely manufactured, useless camera to me. The build quality is nice. The lens, independent focus, zoom, and aperture were all desirable features. I was hoping this camera would surpass my built-in FaceTime camera for Zoom meetings and live streaming — but the video quality is terrible. I don’t see any use for this camera except for maybe using it as a security camera someday.

If you are looking for a webcam, I would stick with well known brands and avoid these. I honestly don’t even know what this camera could possibly be useful for, which is sad because aside from the image quality it is very well built.

Delivers quality imagery and manual focus but mounting is manual and low fps at higher resolutions

A lot of the features and limitations are in the description, so it's good to read that. It's a manual camera compatible with a lot of operating systems, plug and play. Basically a manual DSLR but stripped down to just the sensor and a lens. Don't think lots of zoom, don't think autofocus, there's no microphone. And the good thing about that is that it gives you some control. There are two knobs (smooth operating but they jut out and you might need a mini screwdriver if they're especially tight), one for distance and the other for focus. Testing it out, you really have to spend time to get it set up, and once it's up it's an okay good. You don't control the brightness, and changes in the lighting will change the FPS, just be aware. The focal length is 12mm and the f stop is 2.8. In normal room lighting the image quality is sharp but can be grainy. Frame rate is pretty low at larger resolutions (15 fps), but if you do lower resolution it goes up to 30 fps - that guarantees there will at some point be motion blur at higher resolutions. It's not true 4k as we come to expect it, the coverage is a bit smaller than typical. The aspect ratio is 4:3, not your typical 16:9. Some normal distortion around the edges, as expected with a wider angle. It's sturdy and hefty, metal body, Comes with a long cable, camera cap, screws but no instructions or any features to incorporate it(??), and holes for tripod screw attachments on the top and bottom of the camera.

Bottom line: is it worth the cost? It's pretty pricey if you want to pay for some control over focus and a little zoom and some quality in your video, but if you do expect some limitations (like the fps drop at higher resolutions, no mic, and some grain) and the lack of control over the brightness as well as manually mounting the thing, it mostly delivers.

Great manual focus camera for blogging, webcam, and scope finding, with a few quirks

I like things that are a bit odd. This camera works with every operating system I've plugged into, including my Galaxy S23, so it's universally compatible. if one uses the 1/4-20 threads, then the controls end up on the side of the aperature. There's also a set screw for taking the lens completely off, though I don't know what thread it uses or if there's any other lens for it. Still, it's literally plug it in and it works, and move the four controls until you're in focus. The pins on the aperature are set-screws so be sure to loosen them prior to use.

I was surprised at the quality image this camera produced in a wide array of lighting and dynamic range conditions - it beats even the $200 webcams for quality and lack of video noise. It also zoomed in to where I could read a magazine from about 4 feet off, though that stretched the limits of the focus.

If you do a lot of vlogging or take semi-professional photos for online sales, this camera is way better than a webcam or smartphone, if you learn some basic camera use, which with this thing is literally a minute of fiddling with the controls to feel what they do.

I love this camera. It's a great value for the money.

An absolutely outstanding camera.

The first thing that impressed me was its "heft." It is solidly built, and the optical zoom, video gain, and focus functions on the lens barrel are very smooth.

The 10-ft cable that comes attached to it is heavy duty, and the molded USB connector seems similarly rugged.

The image quality is excellent, both for still image capture and for video. In low light levels there is little discernable noise.

The included tripod threaded sockets on both the top and the bottom of the camera are very solid and convenient. A minor annoyance for me was the fact that the adjustments on the lens (zoom, gain, and focus) are marked on the bottom of the lens if you mount it on a tripod, but if you suspend the lens using the top socket, you will be able to see the markings. The markings are very crisp and easy to read.

I was using the camera on a Windows 11 laptop and a Windows 10 desktop and had zero compatibility issues whatsoever. It was truly plug and play in both cases.

I love this camera. It's a great value for the money.

ALPCAM 8MP USB Camera review

First, let me begin by saying that although you CAN use this camera as a webcam, it does NOT have a microphone built in. So you will need to purchase one separately to use this camera for teleconferencing. (That does not matter much to me, since I don't plan to use it as a webcam.)

My use will be with a tripod, for instructional videos. This camera can take very sharp close up photos with proper lighting, and a tripod. One of the pictures I uploaded shows picture quality without proper lighting (the best I could get it), and second picture of the same electronic device, WITH proper lighting. So if you want high quality shots, use proper lighting!

A little warning: If you use the manual Zoom and Focus rings, be sure you know what you are doing! Otherwise your pictures and videos will be blurry until you get those settings right. I found that the factory settings for those lock screws on Zoom and Focus are optimal for my use anyway.

Features:

Very sturdy, all metal build quality

Compact size: 2 7/8" x 1.5" x 1.5"

Comes with dust cover for lens

Manual Zoom (distance) ring with lock screw

Manual Focus ring with lock screw

Manual Aperture control to let more or less light through lens

Threaded 1/4" (top and bottom) holes to use with regular camera mount or tripod.

Very long USB cable: 10 feet!!

Printed manual with QR code to download AMCap software, but I find that the Windows 10 (or 11) camera app works great with this camera, for videos or still shots.
