This is a deeply powerful book. Written in verse, we are right there with Amira on her journey through the hardships of her life in rural Sudan, and how one little gift helped her not just overcome them but honestly discover herself in the process. It covers a lot of situations not typically seen in middle grade books, but I think that just makes this book all the more valuable.
