Autel MaxiCharger 50A Level 2 EV Charger

No more . . Last AUTEL unit I Purchase (3 So Far)

I am rolling back my anger, I will try to be objective and concise. I bought this replacement unit after my exact other model unit broke 3.9 years into service (out of warranty). Repair, replace and/or refurbished unit NOT AN OPTION. That unit has a review of its own. Now, to this new one; easy to install because I had all the guts already wired and secured from the previous unit. It was a matter of connecting the wires, screws, etc.; Not even 30 minutes. I power it up and go to the app. I scan the barcode and get the 8-digit pin from the paperwork. I try automatic search and "No Chargers were found" message appears; next I try adding it manually and I get "Device Not Found". Mind you I removed my old charger, uninstalled the app, reset circuit breaker, on/off bluetooth . . . . you name it. Finally call CService; they search and they say, YEAP "Device not Found" seems like it is a refurbished unit from 2022 and they did not unlink the serial number from the older account. WHAAAAAATTTTT?? You have to be kidding. I did try to charge the car hoping the app was left in "autocharge" mode; well, that didn't work at all. This is soooooo frustrating . . . . will update as things progress. I chose the latter, will wait for their assessment; but honestly, I don't have high hopes.

Which, as before, was very easy to swap and install because it was an identical replacement model and the hard part of installation had been done years ago.

I was hopeful, but "no cigar" - - this charger AGAIN manifested same issues as the previous one. Auto mode "No chargers were found" in manual mode "Device Not Found" "Bluetooth Pairing Unsuccessful". Tried different iPhones, Resets, Uninstalls, Hard wired Internet, Tried Charging the car; and eventually called AUTEL, which is SLOW as molasses. One NOTE, to reassure myself I reinstalled the "OLD" 2022 charger and was able to "re-link" and "commission" in the app that charger (although the charging function has failed, linking to the device was GOOD)

Poor Hardware, Poorly Designed App, Terrible Support — Premium Price

I decided to go with Autel because I expected a high-quality product from a reputable company. The price is more premium than many competing brands, and Autel has been making automotive diagnostic products for many years, so I expected a reliable and well-designed EV charger. Unfortunately, my experience has been disappointing.

First, the app does not seem to be well thought out. For example, if I travel abroad and my phone switches to a different time zone, opening the Autel app can disrupt my charging schedule. This is a significant issue for anyone who travels, and I would expect the app to handle time-zone changes properly.

Second, the charging cable becomes extremely stiff in cold weather. Even though I live in California, during the winter the cable becomes difficult to unwind and handle. For a premium-priced charger, I expected a more practical and weather-resistant cable design.

Now, after about three years of use, I am experiencing a more serious problem. The charger will charge for over an hour and then report a "Charger Faulty" error and stop charging.

Before contacting customer service, I performed the basic troubleshooting myself, including rebooting the charger through the app, disabling the charging schedule, and turning off the circuit breaker for several hours before trying again. I also confirmed that my car can charge normally using my portable charger, which strongly suggests that the issue is with the Autel charger rather than the vehicle.

Unfortunately, my experience with customer support has been frustrating. The initial response focused on blaming my charging schedule. When I explained that I had been using the same schedule successfully for more than two years, I was told to take my car to the dealer to have it checked. I explained that the car charges normally with my portable charger, but I was again asked to reboot the charger and turn the circuit breaker off—steps I had already performed repeatedly over the previous two weeks.

I eventually had to ask for my case to be escalated, which they did. At this point, I am still waiting to hear back from Autel.

I originally chose Autel because I was willing to pay more for what I believed would be a premium product backed by a reputable company. Unfortunately, both the product experience and the customer support experience so far have not met that expectation. I hope Autel resolves the issue properly, and I will update this review once I receive their final response.

Buy another brand

Ours is defective, so not fixable, but this happened 2 months outside of the warranty. Their response was they aren't doing anything about it. Didn't even offer a discount on this useless device. Wouldn't recommend this brand to anyone.

Burnt

Worked fine for a few months, but then lit up and burned the socket. Luckily, nothing else burnt.

Easy to install and excellent quality

Love this product. No issues works great.

Fire concerns, no product support

Bought it about six months ago, was very easy to install and it did work fantastic… up until the point the plug to the car melted! Now I don’t want to even try to plug it in again, afraid it’s going to catch the car on fire or my house.

Tried to call autel, hard to guide through the phone tree to get someone to talk to, so I e-mailed tech support for help, they e-mailed me back to tell me they got the e-mail and photos. It’s been about two weeks, still have not gotten a call or e-mail back.

Charger stopped working.

Charger worked excellent the first 5 months. The last 48 hours have been a disappointment. You can hear the system go through its process and then it just keep’s clicking and won’t connect to my EV. I have reached out for support and no response. Beware. I’ve even downloaded all the new firmware, factory reset it twice and zero luck.

Update: Seller/ Warranty claims have reached out and offered a full refund. I want another charger. This is not a bad unit and I like the features and ability to control the unit. Keep you posted when they ship a replacement unit. 3-5 day average response from warranty claims.

Replacement unit arrived fast. Around a 7 day turnaround to resolve my issues. That’s a thumbs up in today’s age!

Hardwired and Working

Easy installation and working fine. Placed on outside of garage and will be in direct sun, so will add a cover for some shade. If installing on stucco, plan on using something under the backing plate to add a little extra clearance. Foam mat worked fine for the handle and some plastic spacers worked for the head unit.

We’re not using the wifi or Bluetooth options, as smart charging is done from the car.

Exactly what I needed

My electrician had an easy time making this installation. Once setup, I was able to charge my Volkswagen ID.4 much faster and more reliably. Being able to use the app to monitor charge status is also helpful. One of my favorite features is the ability for the app to use time-of-use electricity rates to estimate the cost. Very, very helpful.

Excellent Quality and Features

Excellent charger. Everything seems high quality and easy to use. Installs in just minutes and the app seems to be great so far with no issues. I like being being able to control charging aspects though the app versus my EVs.

Great value

Much less than the wall charger unit BMW sells, by far. Charging time is 3.5 hours vs. 8-12 hours and with Bluetooth, it's easy to check the charge progress. Highly recommend.

Lasted 6 months beyond warranty

This was a good unit, but stopped working 6 months after the warranty. Replacing with a different brand.

Great quality built to last user freindly

i like everything about this charger you can even set it up for commercial use with an rfid ect. Quality is excellent and great smart features including turn it on and off from your phone schedule charging. Very user freindly and easy to set up and good phone app.

Best Level 2 Charger on a Budget

Overall I'm very happy with this purchase. Ultimately an EVSE is just a power cable with some relays and a bit of logic so I didn't see the need to buy anything higher end. This charges my Leaf at exactly the same speed that a more expensive one would, and if I ever upgrade to a car that can handle faster charging, this EVSE will support it.

Even though I was hard wiring this I bought the 14-50 version since it was significantly cheaper. Removing the supply cable is very easy and they even included a plug to fill the hole on the bottom where it would normally be.

The app is not very interesting, but I didn't expect it would be. It does tell charging status and will show you a graph of the rate of charge for both the current charging session or previous ones. The only hiccup I ran into is that it didn't want to connect to my WiFi at first which I figured out was because my WiFi password had a comma in it. Thankfully the access points I use support multiple SSIDs so it was easy enough to create a unique one just for the charger, but for most people this would mean changing their password which can be a bit of work getting everything connected again.

Powerful charger backed with incredible customer service

This evse was very easy to install. We chose to hardwire the installation. The instructions were very easy to follow and everything was completed in under two hours.

Because we want our airbnb guests to able to use it, we saw the advantage of the RFID function. One call to their customer service and we learned how to request the cards. They responded immediately to our request. They shipped the cards promptly with easy to understand directions. Their customer service is phenomenal.

great charger, great price, highly recommend!

That being said after using it for two months I would've paid full price for it. It's easy to install, easy to use, and sets up in seconds. The ONLY reason why I didn't give it a perfect rating is that my car is set to stop charging at 80%, unfortunately when 80% is reached the charger pauses instead of shuts off however I'm sure they will fix this with a software update so it's not a huge deal.

On a side note, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE hire an electrician to install the wiring and plug. I am very knowledgeable about electricity so I figured I'd save a few bucks and do it myself, well I ended up falling through my dining room ceiling and fracturing my shoulder so guys (and gals), let the professionals do it!

Nice Unit

Easy to install. Nicely built with heavy-duty cables. If you are adding a 14-50 outlet, install the plug upside down (see photo—ground side up) as it will plug in much better that way. Plug cable is just over a foot long. Wall holster is nice as you can install unit near the plug and then run the cable to the holster. The charger goes on sale occasionally (I got 20% off), so if you do not need it immediately, wait for the sale!

Order with correct cord if you have a Tesla!

Took me from 80% charged to 100% charged in one hour on my Model 3. Originally ordered with a generic non Tesla cord but found an adapter for like $50. Not their fault, these things are a learning curve. Easy to use and works well!

Excellent level (2) charger and great app functionality

One of the better level (2) chargers you can purchase for your home. The app is very good and accurate, the power is consistent, and the quality is phenomenal.

Great price and features. RFID cards not yet available

We have had an electric car for several years now but our old L2 charger was not smart. For this early generation L2 charger it retailed for about $1000 and I think I paid about $800. You plugged it in and unless your car can schedule the charging times, you're stuck. With our Tesla, much of the same functionalities that the Autel app gives you is available through the Tesla app so for us the autel app is a little redundant. If your car doesn't have the same functionality as the Tesla this app can provide a great amount of information that will help you know and live with your your EV better. This includes ability to time and schedule charging as well as enter electric cost data so the app can calculate how much you are spending on charging your car.

The feature I was really interested in was the RFID access cards. This makes so much sense because it would allow you to restrict usage if your charger was installed in a place where others can access. For us, this means I could move our charger from behind a locked gate to the other side of the gate where it is accessible from the public sidewalk, where our car is parked. UNFORTUNATELY, the cards are not available yet. I contacted Autel and they said the following:

Dear Customer, The packing list of Autel ev charger does not include the RFID card. The RFID card needs to be purchased additionally, and it is already planned to be launched and you can use after being bound in the Charge APP. Hope this can help you. Have a nice day! Best Regards Autel Team

So I can't review this feature yet, which I'm really bummed about. I considered taking off a star but the charger itself works well and the app is pretty informative if you don't already have that information available to you.

There is a really good review video on youtube that shows someone that has a test card and explained how the RFID system will work. The whole video is 16 minutes long and he does a complete unboxing, installation, setup and explanation of the features and settings. Its really well done and I can't make a video that good so I would direct you there.

So I decided that this is still a 5 star product, it is a good charger that can provide up to 40 amps of power (make sure you are running it off of a circuit set up to handle 50 amps). I am still running it off of a 40 amp circuit so I can safely only charge at 32 amps until the wiring and breaker is upgraded. IT has some pretty good functionality now, and hopefully more in the future. With an adapter, this works great with out Tesla too.

Couple hundred dollars cheaper than major brands with great quality

Originally purchased the ChargePoint plus home charger, but my wife is also thinking about getting an electric car so we would have to look into a second charger and when I saw Autel I was pretty familiar with the brand after using it in the garage I managed for several years. They made ScanTools for engine codes and they made tire monitor scan and reset tools. I always got great customer service from them with their commercial equipment so I trusted that would carryover for this home. Charger works really well and even has a NFC reader to take payments. If you wanted to set it up to allow others to charge so if you want a small businesses be good to sit out front and make more of a commercial use of it prices a couple hundred dollars cheaper than Juicebox or ChargePoint it in my opinion works just as well. Has all the same smart features Wi-Fi Bluetooth. The app is pretty good and the hardware is great.

Needs Improvement

Two good points two bad so three stars... but that could easily move up if they improve the app and allow us to up the amp to 40 since it's sold as a 40...

1: Installing to the garage wall was pretty easy.

2: The App does not have my car. The newest it has is a Chevy Bolt 2020... So they need to update that. I can't even put my updated e-mail in my account on the app. The app is seriously lacking in my opinion.

3: The Ampage won't let me go anything above 32. I wanted to set mine to 38. If you are going to have "safety" blocks in there sell it as a 32-amp charger not a 40.

4: The cord length is good and seems sturdy.

Great functionality, and a good value (especially while it's on sale).

Having recently purchased a 2022 Chevy Bolt EUV, it became clear a better charger than the included one was needed. Chevrolet did offer to install a dedicated circuit to charge the car, but since the house is rented, that is not a great option. I discovered a smart splitter, the Neocharge, that would let me utilize the 240 outlet powering my dryer. It lets you plug in the car on one side, and the dryer on the other. Built-in safety features keep you from using both at once. It was rated for 24 amps, the maximum safe load for continuous draw on a 30 amp circuit. I thought it would step down the car's demand, but I was wrong. The car still tried to pull 32 amps, continuously tripping the Neocharge. Chevy, in their infinite wisdom, decided not to include amperage settings on level 2 charging, even though they did for level one.

I began to scour the internet looking for the best value for the money. There were a lot of sketchy options, and a lot of good options that were super expensive. It came down to this and the Grizzl-E. Ultimately I chose the Autel, as it had more functionality and a better price (on sale). I definitely have no regrets! It was simple to install, has an excellent build quality and very thick, high quality cables. Being able to adjust it both on the main board (so someone doesn't turn it back up on accident) and in the app is pretty cool. The app leaves a little to be desired, as my car is not listed. It does what it needs to do though. Most of the functionality a person would need or want is here. Amperage adjustment, cost analysis, scheduled charging for time of use and remote stop and start are all included. The cord storage is more than adequate, with plenty of room depending on how tightly you coil when winding it up. Inserting the charging handle into the holder is a breeze, and it lets the pressure off the handle by moving to the downward position after you snap it in. If you need an EV charger with adjustable amperage, can't go wrong here!

Awesome charger!

I got this charger to charge my new Mustang Mach E and it does a wonderful job! Very easy to install as long as you have a 14–50 plug. Just a couple of screws and plug it into the wall. I ran the charging cord along the bottom of my wall and used some clips to hold it in place. Still has plenty of room to reach my car and only has to wrap around the cord holder once!

It does have a nice app, seems pretty user-friendly and you can schedule times to charge. I probably won’t use the app that much if ever, my electricity rates are the same all day long so that is the big benefit of the app so you can schedule charging if you have cheaper rates in the evening or overnight.

It seems to charge the car very quickly! Seems like a very high-quality charger that should stand up to Weather and high usage. Mine is in the garage, but I feel like it would be good outside as well.

Would definitely recommend seems like a great value compared to other chargers with these features.

Good Design with Ideal Charging Speed

I bought the EV charger for my new car. The App interface of Autel is pretty good as it can show the charging progress clearly on my smartphone. Charging Speed depends on the output of the home outlet so that a pre-installed NEMA 14-50R outlet with high voltage is preferred. For my car, with the high voltage output, it could provide 10% per hour so that majority of the charging session could be finished within only 5-6 hours during night time. The long charging cable (25-feet) is very useful as no matter head-in or back-in, the car can always be charged easily. The only reminder is about the wall mounting. If your NEMA 14-50R outlet is very close to other devices or switch box, you may need to figure out the ideal location of the charging devices, an 8"x14" available space near your outlet with wall stud could be the best location.

Top of the Line Home EV Charger from a Well Established Company!

This is one great EV charger, and as far as the build quality, you can tell from the moment you open the box that it is a solid impressive unit. What's great is that the maxi charger fits all electric vehicles. This stand alone unit is a level 2 EV charger, which is basically plug and play. As of today, this is the most advanced level 2 EV charger that is being sold out on the market. When you get to levels 3 & 4 chargers, an electrician has to come out to your house and do a lot of "expensive" work. This Level 2 charger gives you all the benefits without any of the hassle!

It’s a perfect charger so far

There are a lot of EV home chargers out there, so I did my homework before I ultimately decided on this one, and in my opinion, it's the greatest one on the market.

The main reasons I decided on this one are its installation, software, power rating and customer service.

ADVANTAGES:

1. Easy Installation. I was happy to find that it was completely pre assembled with a small number of parts needed for installation. I chose to install with an existing 240v outlet which made the process extremely fast.

2. Software. I LOVE their App because it's easy to configure the charger (plug, amps, make / model of your car, etc.), and it tracks all your charging activity at home. The app is very quick and responsive, and shows everything working fine.

3. Flexible Power. I like having the flexibility to select the charging power. You can plug this into a 240 volt power outlet with a flexible amperage settings up to 40 amps (6-40Amp).

4. Fantastic US Customer Service. Their customer service is top notch and I am blown away at how fast and responsive they are. Totally recommend this charger and brand if you are looking for a level 2 charger for you ev.

Not only that, it is effective use is for monitoring your home charging, or scheduling charge time during of peak hours when your costs could be lower. Loved being able to enter our electricity cost and see how much money we were saving using an EV.

DISADVANTAGES - None, except it's a bit heavier than some other EV chargers. In my opinion, it's worth every cent. The entire experience has been outstanding.
