I loaded Open gd77 right away and loaded the codeplug I've used on several other radios. For the price it is amazing. I get better reports on my xmit audio than with my 878UVII-PRO. It also has better rx audio than the 878 in my opinion, and the volume control gives better refinement than the 878. Definitely worth a try!

The comments below look down on this radio. I own a small radio shop, and with $12,000 radios, in an emergency, I would take this. This radio was not made to operate the firmware on it. With the opengd77 software, this radio is my personal choice for DMR/2m repeaters. If you don’t intend to flash with open gd77, do not bother buying it. YouTube.com/@hotspotguy

The Baofeng DM-1701 is a very nice entry-level HT that will help you get started in DMR. Well built, with a rugged case, I like how it fits into my hand. Programing a DMR is not easy...I am pushing 80 years old and have little radio technical knowledge and even fewer computer skills; however, I realize not everyone is as fortunate as I am. It took me a week to figure out DMR programming and get my unit programmed on the air. It has a lot of storage capacity for contacts, digital channels, and zones. I recommend the Baofeng DM 1701.

Surprised with this radio. I can hit a repeater that is 32 miles away from my house. The DMR is very clear from that distance the analog is a little harder but comes through. It's harder to program than most starter radios but not too hard. Great for the price. I recommend.

This is not the most feature rich radio out there. But it’s pretty robust. Once you figure out setting it up Zones, it’ll work as a community CERT/Emergency radio net, ham radio hot spot rig connecting to a table full of hotspots for DMR, YSF and other cross mode nets, DMR and analog ham direct and repeaters, and GMRS work. The audio is strong and clean. Battery life with hotspots it excellent. When using high output RF, about the same as you’d expect from any other handheld. For ham work, it doesn’t have a large contacts list so you do have to edit down from a full dump, but the on screen ID’s are informative. For custom nets, more than plenty of space. If you have to set up radios to hand out to community members that requires DMR comm, it’s a good price point choice to inventory.

Let me start by saying that I wanted to like this radio; it certainly seems to have potential. However, the problems with the software, and more likely the USB driver, make it more than frustrating to program. I have found that the software will only actually write to the radio around every 15 attempts or so, and otherwise, the software just crashes. I updated the software, firmware, and USB driver to the newest versions and it didn't make any difference. With that said, once I got it programmed it performed ok. I considered keeping it with the hope that the software will improve, but every time I want to add something it starts the frustrating cycle all over. I think this could probably be a great radio if the software issues get worked out. This one will be returned.

I purchased this radio and wasn't sure if it was worth the price. After receiving it I was sold. I like it better than the Anytone 868 i have. Once you get the programming software figured out this little radio works just as good as the more expensive ones. This radio can't be beaten for the price!

Here is the Baofeng entry to the DMR market this is the DM-1701 dual band (VHF and UHF) and two time slot radio. I have tested this out over the following past week . Did normal contacts and the contest of the 13 Colonies (Limited contacts) as well.
Like the fact it was easy to set up. Once the battery was fully charged the rest of the setup for code plug and contact list went smooth. The basic cps software is almost the same as other in the DMR field, there were fewer bells and whistles than other cps programs which was nice. The battery time was tested with normal default settings and also when I kept the display back light on all the time, and got 7 plus hours time out of the battery which is plenty of air time, unless you are long winded. The test were done using a mmdvm as there is no local repeaters near my location to do any test there. This boast of 120k contact list as well as 3000 channels which would be plenty of room for multiple city or like me as a storm spotter different channels for different uses such as Hurricanes, Severe Weather, and you can monitor vhf and uhf channels such as fire and police as well as local authorities, Again programing easy to follow and firmware update was quick and had no problems doing the needed update. The only thing I would change in the program is the display time from 5,10 and 15 seconds to at least 15, 30 and 60 seconds. The volume is good and while making contacts did dot get any complaints from the built in mike. Now I did not have a external mike to try so cannot comment on that function. The included antenna is standard issue. On a scale of 1 to 10, I would give this a 9+. I am very satisfied with this radio, and a nice addition to my Ham Shack.

I enjoy operating on DMR radio as a ham, but I also use DMR for professional business purposes, too. I like having a radio that does both easily, simply by a zone change. The Baofeng DM-1701 meets all my needs for communicating on DMR around the state, or even the world. When I am not actively on the ham bands, I can switch over to using the DM-1701 with encrypted business channels for my business. It's the best of both worlds. I must say that the documentation included with this radio through Radioddity's downloads is top-notch. Never have I seen such detail provided for a DMR radio buyer. Not only that, this radio, with the appropriate firmware, can handle almost all ham contacts worldwide -- up to 120,000. In fact, Radioddity will give you the file you need for your radio so every ham's name and call sign from around the world will appear on your radio when they transmit. The audio on both transmit and receive is crystal clear. The menu functions are easy to operate. The code plug software (be sure you use the correct version with your firmware), is very intuitive, especially if you have used other DMR radios. While this is a Baofeng radio, Radioddity offers support -- and their support is top notch! There are three power output levels -- 1, 2 and 5 watts, which is one more level than most radios offer. Use 1 watt with your hotspot to save battery power, use 2 watts if you are near a repeater and use 5 watts if you are on the fringe. My DM-1701 worked great on the amateur DMR talkgroups and everyone commented that my audio was crisp and clean. The radio looks very professional, too! This was an excellent addition to my ham shack for DMR handheld use -- as well as analog use. There are plenty of channels to include all your favorite talkgroups and frequencies for both modes on VHF and UHF.

The Baofeng DM-1701 is a very good dual band, dual time slot DMR Radio that performs well in both analog and digital modes. In the box you get the usual accessories including an antenna, desktop charger, belt clip, and wrist strap. Also included is a free programming cable. Free programming software is available from Radioddity's website. You'll want to download it and not attempt to program the radio by hand.
Out of the box, the radio seems ruggedly built and well made for the price. The screen is bright, clear, and easy to read. Volume is strong too. I downloaded the free software from Radioddity and also a newer firmware update. Once the radio was updated and I installed the programming software, creating a codeplug was easy to me since this radio is very similar to other DMR radios I already own. Programming all my talkgroups from one of my local systems took under 30 minutes. I talked to a few contacts in my local talkgroups and they said my audio was very good. I also programmed in a few analog repeaters, and the DM-1701 performed equally as well. Battery life seems great as I'm still on my initial charge.
All around I'm very impressed at how well the DM-1701 performs and the all features it has, at a low price point. Although I have several other DMR radios, this one is an excellent addition to my shack.
