Capable Utility Handheld for Outdoor and Emergency Comms

If you need a flexible handheld radio for trail convoys or off-grid camping trips, this Baofeng UV-5G Plus GMRS unit is a practical step up from basic walkie-talkies. I'm a fan of GMRS (license and all) and have always had a great time with Baofeng gear. This is one of their best GMRS models.

It'll easily run local repeater channels and stay connected with a group while driving through areas with spotty cell service, and it met my expectations without issue. The 15.5-inch whip antenna pulls in signals significantly better than short stock rubber duck antennas, and having direct USB-C charging right on the battery makes topping it off in the truck completely hassle-free. NOAA weather is a nice bonus, too.

Appearance-wise, it retains that classic Baofeng industrial utility look with an updated, readable color screen and a rugged matte black housing. The materials consist of a tough polycarbonate chassis, tactile rubber keypads, and a sturdy metal antenna connector that doesn't feel loose under stress. As for durability, the drop resistance and overall assembly feel solid enough to take a few hits on the trail or in a gear bag without cracking.

It comes in at a solid value considering it includes two batteries, a programming cable, and the longer high-gain antenna in the package. Great option if you want extended GMRS range and easy CHIRP customization.

GMRS Legal, but can receive other bands

When I first powered up this dedicated GMRS radio, I was shocked to see a ham 2-meter band frequency on the lower screen. Further research showed that it is indeed FCC Type-certified for GMRS. The radio is only capable of transmitting on the legal GMRS frequencies but can receive over a very wide range. As a licensed ham, that allows me to keep an eye on 2-meter or 70-cm repeaters, though I can't transmit on them. The expanded memory (1000 channels) first seemed a bit much for GMRS, but now it's more interesting. I can program the channels such that the first 30 use no tomes, but the rest can be set up with tones and named for the repeaters in the different areas where I travel. The tones can be applied there. That way I have a wide-open recieve area, where I can monitor for activity, and can filter on the other frequencies to reduce interference. The radio has 8 watts of power (though some frequencies have lower outputs), for good long-range communication with its 15 inch antenna. It came with a Baofeng programming cable, and is fully CHIRP compatible, and I've already cut-and-pasted some favorite channels.

It also had an extra battery, both of which can be charged via usb-c, thank goodness. I've replaced as many batteries in radios with Type-c as I can, since the wide range of base architecture means you need a lot of desk space for radio charging. I must have 6 or 7 different, mutually incompatible charging stands. USB-C is the boss.

The sound quality is clean and clear, and I've had no problems with the output. It also came with one of the cheap earpieces, which is sometimes convenient, though I don't use them often. The lanyard was a pain to insert, as the cord seemed thicker than the hole it was supposed to go into - even a paper clip wouldn't fit. I'll be using the included belt clip rather than the lanyard. Since it comes with the extra battery, it's a reasonably good price. I've seen two-packs of gmrs radios for less, but they generally have limited channel memory and power.

Screen stopped working after two days

Worked for two days then the screen on one of the radios stopped working. Nothing but a blank screen on it now.

BAOFENG UV-5G Plus

Received everything as noted in the description. These radios come pre-programmed for FRS/GMRS. The UV-5G Plus is a great inexpensive way to go for beginners. I recommend upgrading the antennas to a Nagoya NA-771G for better range. These hand held radios are FCC approved. A GMRS license is required to transmit and very easy to obtain with no test. You can manually program or use software like CHIRP for easy use.

Horrible in Sunlight

Horrible in Sunlight.

You can see the white/grey text for the channel details ok in direct sunlight.

The Red menu text with the blue background is absolutely unreadable in any sort of sunlight.

This is not just a mild annoyance, it is so bad that I am unable to make menu changes or adjustments outside when it is sunny.

Beyond that it is a very capable radio with a huge battery life.

I am contemplating returning the menu text color is so bad.

Good Radio, Minor Defect

I recently purchased the Baofeng UV-5G Plus radio set (two radios in a package). They mostly are working well except for one thing that a potential buyer might want to note. The battery level indicators (see picture for a fully charged battery) on both of my radios do not work. The batteries charge OK and the radio works OK but the battery level indicator always shows that the battery is exhausted (window should be black not clear). This not a huge problem since you can “train” the radios to show battery voltage when they are turned on. A fully charged battery should show 8.2 volts and I assume this would go down as the battery is used. Since the radio knows what the voltage is and the window for reporting the battery level is there, I assume that this is a software problem not hardware fault. Unfortunately, it appears the UV-5G Plus uses read only memory for software, not flash memory, so this problem cannot be corrected with a software update. My radios report Firmware V 1.05 and hardware V 01. If you get a radio with a later firmware version this may be fixed but I don’t know how you would know this ahead of time. I can ask for a replacement for them but I don’t know what I will get and since it is not a major problem and the price is so good I plan to keep them. I have ask for comment from Baofeng but have not received a response.

Good model radio

This model works well. Excellent power output and is specifically designed for gmrs. I would recommend an optional longer antenna. Will work much better, for distance. Easy to program off chirp. Fits in your hand nicely and is solid. It is not water rated, like some others. For me ,its works. More of an opinion. To each their own.

Antenna was bent

I got the uv5g plus. You need an FCC license transmit with these. The radio seems to work well and had great sound quality. I really like that this charges with a usb c wire. I was able to go about 2 miles and still hear fine with the stock antennas. I can also connect to a repeater about 5 miles away. These fit nicely in your hand and you can also clip it to your car visor, but it does slowly slide off and needs to be readjusted occasionally. I did not test is this was waterproof. I like the design, it does have a lot of features that require reading the manual to understand. My only concern was that one of the antennas seemed to be bent at the base where it screws on. This made the antenna go on at a weird angle and not seat properly. I returned these and ordered another set. When I had these next to each other, I noticed the one with the bent antenna received a slightly worse signal compared to the radio with the non bent antenna.

Able to use Repeaters!

Handhelds worked well on the first time use in the field on a hunting excursion .Kind of wished the accessories included a sleeve for a more protected carry component. Like them so far.

Low cost GMRS radio with many good features.

Great radio for the price. Worked with Chirp NEXT after selecting the Radioddity UV-5G Plus radio model (not Baofeng). I was able to hit local repeaters and transmit in simplex operation without issues. The USB-C charging is also a nice to have feature. The transaction with Sharkoo was painless and as advertised.

ATXexas

one unit defective

I got 2 units. The first one I was able to CHIRP easily. The second one just wouldn't work. That's when I noticed that the red light was staying on. THEN I literally (not figuratively) burned the tip of my finger when I accidentally touched the antenna port. The fact it was so hot clued me into the fact the radio was borked. I then noticed that the battery and whole radio was really hot. I know these are supposed to be good radios and get good reviews and 1/2 of them seemed rad - unfortunately the other radio is a dangerous dud.

This is GMRS only.

There's nothing functionally wrong with this radio set. This is a very solid radio which functions well. I have zero complaints. However, I feel like it is a bad decision to buy a GMRS only radio. To be clear, this only transmits on GMRS frequencies, it will, however, receive HAM (2M and 70cm) frequencies and GMRS frequencies, as well as NOAA weather channels. The reason I say by the UV-21R instead is because it we'll also do GMRS frequencies, as well as HAM frequecies. If you don't want to receive or transmit on HAM frequencies, you can simply not include that in your programming. This is easily programmed via the free CHIRP software. However, in an emergency, it is beneficial to be able to transmit and receive on all frequencies. So, for the sake of compatability, buy the UV-21R and only use the GMRS if that is all you need. But, keep your options open, regardless of whether or not you have a HAM license. I would get the Baufeng UV-21R instead. The UV-21R is the radio on the far right in picture #2. The UV-21R is also cheaper.

Work as advertised

These are some great radios! There’s a bit of a learning curve on my part, however the product works just fine! I’ve had to learn radios and how they work as I’m a relative novice. I’ve since obtained my GMRS LICENSE and have learned how to program by using “CHIRP”! I would recommend these radios for beginners like myself, great product; and the price isn’t bad either! 👌🏾😀

Great GMRS Radios - Cable works with MacOs

I measured the SWR with a Surecom SW-102 and got the following results:

Baofeng Short LOW 1.04 (99.94%)

Baofeng Short MED 1.57 (95.05%)

Baofeng Short HIGH 1.89 (90.50%)

Baofeng Long LOW 1.01 (99.99%)

Baofeng Long MED 1.53 (95.60%)

Baofeng Long HIGH 1.80 (91.79%)

I had one long antenna that was damaged, reported SWR 19.99, hence the 4 star review.

The radio is great, easy to use, programmable on a Mac with the included cable. What's not to like!

If you want a great FRS/GMRS radio look no further!

The new improved Baofeng

These radios are nice overall. The kit includes two of everything. Two USB-A 5V 1A chargers with USB to USB-C chargers. Medium and long antennas, belt clips and lanyards. Headsets are basic over the earbud types with the Kenwood style 3.5mm and 2.5mm plug. The quick release lithium batteries are 2000mAh.

The instruction manual is fair. The manual would be helpful if they listed the DCS and the CTSS codes but they’re available on the Internet. The menu options 1-43 is bit clunky and there is a default timeout if you don’t make a selection where it will exit the menu if key input is not detected within 5 seconds.

The multifunction button for FM radio and emergency transmitting on your group is an odd choice. The weather radio function is helpful as so is the flashlight which has a an ON and a flash mode.

Overall, it appears that this is a more refined version of prior Baofeng product lines. Hopefully this one continues to meet (or exceed) competitor standards at a good price point.

Baofeng makes some quality radios and these are no exception.

Great little starter kit for someone wanting to get familiar with radios and learn how it all works. This 2 radio kit comes with everything needed. Chargers, earpieces, 2 different sets of antennas, user manual and even a data cable for programming on a compatible PC.

There is a TON of great information online on how to use and program these radios, I highly recommend anyone getting into this to start doing research online. The inclusion of the USB data cable is a nice touch. Programming these by hand can be a real pain but when you get them hooked up to a computer it makes it so much easier.

You can charge them with the included USB charging cable and wall outlet plugs. There are also cradle chargers available which are easier to just place them into when charging but those are not included. The user manual is pretty extensive but I would suggest just reading online about them. You will learn a lot more quickly this way.

The only issue I had was when trying to put the foam covers onto the ear pieces. I actually tore the foam when trying to get it to slide over the ear piece. But the ear pieces themselves are really well made and of much higher quality then any of the other ear pieces I have tried from other brands.

This is a great all in one radio set for anyone wanting to get into radio comms. The included USB programming cable is probably one of the biggest bonuses. I highly recommend baofeng's radios.

Nice design,Works good

I am highly satisfied with the performance of the BAOFENG UV-5G Plus GMRS Handheld Radio. The sleek black design exudes simplicity and sophistication. Constructed with robust materials, it exhibits excellent impact resistance, proving its durability in challenging outdoor environments.

The well-thought-out button layout contributes to the user-friendly experience. The buttons are of appropriate size, providing a comfortable feel for easy operation, even when wearing gloves. Clear and understandable labels above the buttons make it accessible even for beginners.

The audio quality is impressive, delivering clear sound even in noisy environments. The communication quality remains excellent, ensuring effective and reliable conversations.

Equipped with a powerful 2500mAh battery, the radio boasts strong battery life, allowing continuous usage for up to 24 hours under normal conditions. The presence of a USB-C charging port on the back of the battery, supporting fast charging, ensures a quick recharge in a short period.

The device offers rich functionality, extending beyond basic communication features. Advanced capabilities such as emergency alerts, and a built-in radio are notable additions. The package includes two extra-long antennas, and in my testing, the communication range reached up to 4 miles in moderately uneven terrain with minimal obstructions and overcast weather conditions.

Durable Handheld Radio's

This set took about a month to arrive, but when it did the package was professionally packed and full of add-ons. The radios themselves seem to be very durable, and of good quality. The sound quality is clear and concise. I have not gone in depth with these, however the initial review is great! The radios are heavy duty and seem to be able to handle a few bumps or accidental drops. The price point is great, considering you get the entire package with customizable antennas, programming cable, 2 desktop chargers with adapters, belt clips & hand straps. These are a little different than most, using USB C to charge, making it incredibly convenient to charge in the car/on the go. The battery life is decent, and they are fairly lightweight. I haven't tested the range any farther than a mile or 2 yet, but the sound was clear & crisp. I still have a lot to learn while using these radios, but for now they seem like a quality set. The manual is not the best, but it gets you through the basics.

Great ham radio with a ton of uses

So im fairly familiar with Baofeng radios as ive ran them in the past. My video will compare a cheaper model vs this model but both radios are great quality. This package comes with 2 radios, 2 chargers, 2 sets of antennas, 2 batteries (1 for each), 2 wrist straps, 2 spring clasp, 2 programming cables, and 2 ear pieces. These are not encrypted radios so anyone who tunes to your channel can hear what your transmitting. The UV5G has a great 2500 mah battery pack on it allowing it to operate all day under normal use conditions. The transmissions come in clear and easy to read. I usually stay clear of the solid antennas and go straight to the flexible as i run them on my person and its a lot less cumbersome than a rigid version. Overall the construction is solid and durable as i have it in the rain and it still operates just fine. If your doing this make sure all the rubber seals are closed first or it will fail.

Capabilities -

Distance is based off of obstacles. If your in a city the distance will drop drastically. For me in rural mountain terrain im able to communicate at 15 miles fine. This is with the stock flexible antenna.

Channels - total 999 however only 969 are modifiable meaning when you program this and want to input channel such as your locations emergency broadcast service or weather you will only be able to do this with 969 channels. These have NOAA channels and all that as well.

The radio has buttons so if you know the exact channel you can go straight to it. It also has A/B channel capabilities so you can listen in to 2 channels and reply with the push of a button making it simple to operate and relay. It has a flashlight as well. The nob on the top right turns it on and the further rotated it allows for louder volume. There are a lot of operating buttons that do a ton of different things and to type all these would take a very long time so read the handbook or find a video to explain all of its abilities. If your looking to get into the world of ham radios or long distance communications this is a good place to start but keep in mind these are not encrypted.

Great radios with lots of accessories.

Of course, these are GMRS radios, so most of the "cool features" are either locked or not present. As far as are they unlockable or mod-able? of '23) so just what capabilities they have are as of yet unexplored. In their default state, they are 2 very well accessorized GMRS radios that also have lots of things most GMRS radios don't, such as FM radio. Perhaps the best thing about this kit is that it comes with some pretty groovy accessories, that many times you have to purchase separately. Such as an official Baofeng programming cable (yay!), and 2 extra-long antennas, which provide quite the boost in range.

One thing you may want to be aware of, is Baofeng has completely changed their charging setup with the UV-5G Plus, versus models such as the UV-5R. There is no interchangeability with the UV-5R system, the radio won't fit into the UV-5R base station charger, and the batteries are not interchangeable. Baofeng has gone to a USB C charging port on the back of the battery (which took me a minute to find), and while it maintains a set of contacts on the back for use in a base station charger, one is not included. In addition, I have been unable to find any mention of a base station charger for this radio. So I don't know if one even exists. I even checked the Baofeng website, and although it lists this radio singly and in pairs, there is no mention of any optional chargers.

In other words, USB C is your only method of charging this radio, as of right now anyway.

The only real complaint is the manual is a bit lacking in detail...of any kind. There are many options available for the newcomer.

I included a photo of this radio along with my UV-5R Mk 3, my UV-5R Mk 4, and my UV-5RUSH, to give you an idea of what's changed on this latest model from Baofeng.

In all, there really is very little to not like here. For the money, you get a pair of very capable GMRS radios that do a lot more than most GMRS radios, especially for the money you spend.

More features, more battery life, more bulk - FCC LICENSE REQUIRED

This is a GMRS radio for power users. I appreciate the upgraded antennas, and larger memory and battery. And the frequency copy. Copy looks like it could be useful at some point in the future. But the most notable thing immediately is that it is massively larger than a regular UV 5R.

Well I saw the listing indicated a new larger screen, I was pretty enthused. But upon getting it, it's mostly the same display information as a regular UV 5R. The channel numbers are still itty bitty in spite of the larger screen.

The extra channels aren't doing me much until the radio gets support for CHIRP. I'm not going to manually program that many channels.

A quick reminder to people who don't know, but GMRS radios do require an FCC license to operate. At the FCC site, for $35, you get a 10-year license that authorizes you and your family members to operate on GMRS frequencies.

Really Nice Upgrade

Excellent set of GMRS radios.

I've included a picture of the new UV-5G Plus beside the UV-5R5 for size comparison.

The new UV-5G is a much more comfortable size to work with. It's easier to grip and hold onto.

I really like the upgraded antenna as well. Signals are strong and sound quality is great.

The color lighted, easy to read display screen is plenty bright and visible even in direct sunlight.

It has a larger battery and the best part is that it can be charged using USB-C. That is something I have been wanting in a radio for a while now.

So far, I haven't found any special 'codes' or unlocking features that can sometimes be found for these radios, but I'm sure it's just a matter of time.

Either way, it's a great set of radios right out of the box and a great communication tool to have on hand.

Of course you still have your FM and Weather options so you don't have to rely on multiple radios.

Great for staying in touch on road trips, camping, or wherever you may need reliable communication.
