Great beginer books

These are great books for kids learning to read. Lots of repetitive words and the general site words. I use these with my Kindergartener and it is never a fight to get her to sit down and do them! Good pictures and story lines. She thinks they're great!

Great add to your kids book collection!

The hen is red

Sometimes the same-color formatting overrides continuity where it probably shouldn't 😅

but overall good-enough books, especially for serving the purpose they're meant to serve

Kindergarten skills

I ordered these books for my daughter to use during the summer before. She heads to first grade. They're approachable for her and she can read them independently. I like the simple graphics and easy to read text.

Paid for new got used

I just started implementing these books with my daughter's language arts course. They are great in the learning and reading aspect, but I ordered new books and received used books. Did not find this out until reaching book 6 in the set and found pages had been colored on by a previous owner. The books are not where my children can access them so I looked through the remaining books in the set that we had not pulled out of the box yet and found several others with markings and looks like sticky food or bodily fluid of some sort as the pages were stuck together. Soooo gross. This was a purchase made in December. Very upset to believe I was opening up a new box of books, only to later find out they were used. Especially the gross sticky stuff in the book, be it food or bodily fluids.

Misleading HARDCOVER description.

HARDCOVER?? The box they are stored in is cardboard & the hardest part of the packaging & books. The books themselves are like any other paperback book where a four year-old could potentially tear them while opening the books. I was really looking forward to a hardcover book for my granddaughter to get in and out of the book case easily, but these are thin paperbacks. The books will be great for her to learn to read, just disappointed in the description of “HARDCOVER.”

GET THIS BOOK NOW!!! Help your child to start reading TODAY!!!

This book is EVERYTHING AND ALL YOU NEED for beginner readers. It also gives you instructions on how to help them navigate reading. Also, at the back of the book it gives them a revision of sight words. It’s easy to read and it’s fun for them with simple pictures on each page to help them figure out what they’re reading about. I LOVE THIS BOOK SET!

Paired with other book, 4 yr old is reading!

I loved Bob books as a kid and now my 4 year old does too! I highly suggest purchasing, Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons, along with the Bob books. After 4 lessons he is confidently reading the first 4 Bob books to us with very little correction. He is so excited and so are we!

Perfect!

These are mostly compiled of words that can properly be sounded out letter by letter with a few sight words such as or/and/the. My 5 year old is able to read all of them and I will be buying the next level soon.

Great for new readers!

These are just great. I've used them for years as a teacher, but now we also use them at home as we teach our oldest to read. There are multiple levels, this is just the first set. Great for kids around age 4 or 5, or really anyone starting to read.

Amazing books

Recommended by a teacher I have helped my three children Learn to read with this set. The books are short easy to catch on sounds for beginners. I really noticed how it helped my young reader gain confidence! Highly recommend.

Teacher recommended

My newer reader (5 yo) gets so excited about books he can read from start to finish on his own. We were struggling to find books that were really appropriate for his level. So many of the “level 1” or “first readers” have so many words that are neither sight words nor phonetically simple (ie. Easy to sound out). His teacher recommended the BOB books and they are perfect. All of the words in the books are either sight words or easy for him to sound out on his own. Also because there are so many, he’s not just reciting from memory the same 1 or 2 books, but really reading the words each time. The only down side…the stories themselves don’t have much substance.

Product Fine, Besides Being Fulfilled by

The books are great little readers. I love them.

But I have now TWICE been sent my brand new box set beat up and looking used. I love books. I want my son to love books. I want NEW looking books when I buy them NEW. This isn't the workers fault. They're following instructions. Especially if this is how little you care.

Ehh!!

The books were great and the quality was everything it described to be. These books were way too simple for my son. We used a few but I think these were not a god fit for us. I will need to look at the others and see what set would be a better fit for us.

Wonderful for up and coming readers.

Bob Books are written for the child who has just made the giant leap from sounding out the letters, to hearing the word. I have a 5 year old student who has just made that leap, and have started him in set 1 of the Bob Books. Characters like Mat and Sam, a dog and a cat sit on mats, sit on each other and have other exciting adventures in 3 and 4 letter words. My little guy loves them. The illustrations are cute and simple drawings, but my guy was offended when we came to a red hen and a pink pig, and they were white in the book. It spent a bit of time correcting that mistake so that the words and pictures matched. We will soon finish set 1 which is composed of 12 little 8 page books. The picture is of book one and book 12 in set 1. As a teacher, I am thankful for this resource.

3 yo read her first book by herself with Mat!

We cracked these books open tonight. The very first book in the box was Mat. We reviewed the beginning sounds for Book 1 and she was able to sound the words out and everything we'd covered with phonics clicked. She read the whole book by herself on the first try.

Highly recommend.

Amazing

I purchased this book set based one review that I connected with. Our daughter (6) we have been struggling with to learn the basics we have invested hundreds to try and find something that works for her. We got this set today, I read over it once and she was able to read it back to me and we even waited a couple hours and tried and she was able to read it two more times, we have read a total of 3 books today and I have already ordered more from the series. I will also be ordering some as gifts

Sam got a new look, thankfully!!

I saw a review that showed Sam looking like a Klan men ever. It almost deterred me from buying the set but I was hopeful that scholastic may have Changed his appearance into my delight they did! This is a great start to reading for my four-year-old! Unlike any other early reading book I’ve seen, so helpful!

Great Purchase

My four-year-old son learned to read with this set. He was already picking up sight words but once we started these his reading accelerated. We still reread them for vowel review. This is a great purchase. There is a workbook that goes along with it to make lessons more impactful as well.

Simple but effective

Simple but cute. My 6 year old daughters have been reading them and they are able to get through them even though they just started reading and learning site words. They really aren't much just thin paper so im glad I only paid $10. My girls feel good about themselves when they get through a book so I will buy the next stage. I would recommend to any parent since it's simple and cheap, no fussing with internet or library fees.

It has been working out great and my child is really starting to quickly advance ...

As a Homeschool parent of young children one of the most important and fundamental things you much teach your children is how to read. The Bob Books series can on their own do just that. While I supplement with other stories, bob books has been the main part of my reading curriculum. I do a read/write/draw lesson where I take three days to read a book (for the first few books it took longer and as I am progressing it has gone faster). I pick three pages and write down the sentence, my child reads it then in the next section writes words from the sentence 3 times (first traces, second time traces dotted lines, and a third time completely on her own), then finally in the third section she draws a picture of what the sentence makes her think about. It has been working out great and my child is really starting to quickly advance in reading and I am not even done with the first set yet.

The BEST for the earliest stage of reading

I first discovered the BOB books when I was working in children's bookstores. I have since worked as an elementary school teacher and teacher trainer. Professionally, I know that the BOB books are the very best available resource for helping kids with the earliest stages of phonics understanding and reading. This is a video of me getting to experience that truth as a mom! I can't overstate how exciting it is to see any child succeed at reading his/her first book. :D

This video doesn't show you the illustrations, but it does give you a sense of the difficulty level for the easiest book in this series. And you can also see how fun it is for my son to read: I love his giggles when the characters sit on each other.

Reading is not just about phonics - it's really important to support kids in thinking about what makes sense (using picture cues when they're there), checking if it sounds right (Does it sound like the way people talk?), and recognizing sight words. BUT phonics is an essential part of reading and when a child is ready to sound out simple words, the BOB books are a great place to start. Most of the beginning reader series start at a point beyond this, and would be unnecessarily frustrating for someone at the very earliest stage.
