Great for regular documents, but disappointing for specialty printing

I've been using the Canon MegaTank Maxify GX2020 for my small business, and while it's economical on ink and prints regular documents well, I've run into several issues that have been frustrating.

The biggest problem is printing on glossy paper. The printer seems to apply too much ink, especially when printing photos, which can cause smudging and leave business cards and other glossy prints looking less professional than expected. This has been frustrating since I do a lot of custom printing.

I've also had difficulty using the rear paper tray. It isn't as straightforward as I expected, and I still find it difficult to use.

Another issue is that thicker paper tends to jam, even when it's within the recommended paper specifications. This slows down my workflow and wastes both paper and time.

On the positive side, the print quality on standard paper is sharp, and the MegaTank ink system is very cost-effective for everyday printing. However, if you plan to print a lot of glossy materials, photos, business cards, or thicker cardstock, this may not be the best choice. Overall, it's a good printer for standard office documents, but it hasn't met my expectations for specialty printing.

Just stops working.

Printer is garbage. It worked for first month. Then I kept getting an error that "the maintenance cartridge is not installed." Nothing I did helped resolve the error. I even purchased a new maintenance cartridge and still nothing. Definitely a big waste of money.

Replacement Ink is reasonably priced

Fairly easy setup (up to a point.) The ink bottles were sturdy with screw on caps. The ink bottles have an unusual opening, that fits into a slot in the ink housing, which ensures no leaks. It also means that you have to be sure to purchase replacement ink that comes in a bottle that will fit this printer. The ink was gravity fed and filled the reservoir quickly. I like that there is a front window that shows the ink level in the reservoir.

Instructions on backlit screen were clear and easy to follow - until it came time to connect to wifi, where it said to follow instructions on pc or mobile device. In order to setup wifi on this printer, you have to first download an app onto your device (which I was not pleased with.). The app requests to “share” data for quality control. I declined everything not required. They lost a star because of this feature.

The front loading paper tray was easy to open and closed smoothly. The paper guides adjusted easily. Print quality is very good. Loved the ink reservoir windows, as well as the paper tray window. The backlit control screen is adjustable and a nice feature.

Since this is a new printer, I cannot speak to ink consumption yet. But given the amount of ink, the bottles held, compared to what an ink cartridge would hold, I expect it to last a very long time. I priced out replacement ink before buying. A set of the three colors plus black from Canon ran about $50 in summer 2026. A set of generic ink, same as before, ran $30. Kudos to Cannon for not making the ink nozzles proprietary.

Arrived death from the box

Unfortunately, my experience was very disappointing. The printer arrived brand new, but it was completely dead on arrival. It would not power on at all. I tested it with multiple outlets and made sure the power cable was securely connected, but there were no lights or any signs of life.

This appears to be a factory defect, which is frustrating for a brand-new product. I now have to go through the replacement process and wait even longer before I can use the printer.

I hope my replacement works properly, but receiving a defective unit right out of the box is not the experience I expected from Canon.

Worst. Printer. Ever. It won't print color.

This printer will not print color. I spent an hour with a live human on Canon Tech support. He said to replace the maintenance cartridge and shipped the part to me. I replaced the maintenance cartridge and it still doesn't print in color. I am sorely disappointed. I spent $300 on this printer and it doesn't work.

Major disappointment. Unreliable. Poor value. Low-quality printing.

We are less than 700 printed pages into the life of this printer, and it can no longer print color images reliably. All of our ink volumes are over 75%, but images and tests show that the printer is only printing from the blue cartridge reliably. One of the attached images is a "nozzle check" test after several "cleaning" and "deep cleaning" cycles. Notice that there is no red or yellow ink in the testing area. I used to be able to squeeze out a single OK color print after a few "cleaning" cycles, but even this is failing now. It is just a bulky piece of clutter on my desk. Look elsewhere.

Not a good choice at this price

The ink level of this printer is quite sufficient, but when printing in color, it tends to have shadows. For example, in black and white documents, the red annotations don’t print out as a pure red; instead, there’s a light blue shadow. Additionally, its ADF function is poor, frequently getting jammed and causing overlapping scans.

Excellent choice other than a cartridge printer. This mega printer saved money

This printer scanner copier had its challenges to set it up, but wasn’t as bad as I expected. Reading the directions basically gave you absolutely no idea how to fill the canister with ink and it really had you messing around with parts that you shouldn’t be messing with. In the end, it’s a very simple printer to use. It’s a very simple printer to refill with ink. It’s got great quality pictures. Great quality print, but it does have a slight learning curve to it. I highly recommend this.

Easy set-up - excellent printing!

This is my first Cannon printer, and I will never go back to that 2-letter manufacture again. I like the ink tank concept and getting away from the rip-off manufacturers do selling low volume ink cartridges for high prices! This Cannon printer is compact and feature rich. Admittedly it cost more upfront than cartridge printers, but worth a chance to me in giving it a try. Time will tell but it feels like the last printer I'll ever buy!!

Satisfied

I’ve been looking for a wireless refillable ink printer for a while. I initially purchased an Epson Ecotank but ended up returning it because it jammed every time I used the ADF to scan. I set up the Canon GX 2020 this morning. I was a little challenged during set up because it kept asking for the admin, username and password. Once I realized this was the name and password for my computer, setup went smoothly. I’ve already scanned several sets of documents on the ADF and printed a colorful photo. Pretty happy so far.

Disappointed

I was excited about this new printer given the reviews, specs, size, and functionality. But after trying it out, I’m very disappointed with the printing quality. As you can see in the photo, it creates these lines, even when I tried printing on high quality, heavier paper. It’s 2024 and printers still do this?

Immediate Error Code- Printer Does Not Work!

As soon as we turned on the printer an error code came up. We did all possible trouble shooting and contacted support. The issue was unable to be resolved. I am very upset that this printer was defective right out of the box.

Color copies look great.

I needed to replace my HP printer that I’ve had for many years. It just quit feeding the paper. I’m glad that I decided to try this Canon printer. It arrived quickly and I didn’t have any problems setting it up. It was easy to connect to my wi-fi and has been working very well. It’s advertised to get a lot of copies out of the ink. I checked the price for replacing and filling the ink reservoirs and it is very reasonable. My HP was real expensive to replace the cartridges and they didn’t last very long especially the colors. It prints quickly and does print two-sided which can save on paper. The size was not too bulky and it should fit well in most locations. The control screen isn’t too big but is still easy to read and use. Overall this printer has been working very well.

Hands down the best printer I've owned.

Out of the box I tried setting this up wirelessly with the Microsoft "add a printer" option on my computer without success. Then plugged it into a LAN port with the same negative results. I decided that it would be easier to just install the app from the Windows store and that made all the difference. I assume if there were any other issues I could call tech support. As big a name as Cannon is I think they should be pretty solid.

Setup was easy and everything was online and going in less than 5 minutes. Connecting was the same using Android and I-phone.

The print quality is amazing. Even color pictures on basic paper look nice. I can't wait to try on actual photo paper. The ink fill was also super easy. The replacement bottles seem very inexpensive and should be economical. However, I didn't see any documentation on the life span of the print head.

This printer has a lot of bells and whistles I haven't set up yet. It has an option to email a scanned document or photo right from the printer! There's way more stuff than I'll ever use. I just need a economical, quality printer and so far this fits the bill.

It's a printer

It's a printer, says it all. It's okay but I couldn't find anything great about this printer. The setup process failed and I had to figure it out on my own. The print quality is pretty good but not great. As I wrote this, I tried to print to the printer and my computer told me it was offline. I had to physically press the power button to wake it up. Right down the line I would call it OK.

Great Printer…Compact and Perfect Quality

I am so happy I got this printer…overall quality is great and has so many great functions.

Set up was fairly easy, was up and running within 5-10 minutes. Was much more compact that I was expecting, was nervous it would be too larger for my space but fit on top of our desk perfectly. Once you plug it in you just follow the onscreen instructions to fill the tank with ink and set up the Wi-Fi and do a test alignment print. Was easy to follow and much easier than I expected.

Filling the ink tank was less intimidating that I expected, each ink bottle fits perfectly into its corresponding space…it wont let you put the wrong ink in the wrong slot so no need to stress. You just place it on top and push it down and let the ink fill…you can see through the window and once it’s full you just remove the bottle and close the tray. Was easy and quick…each bottle filled each tray once fully.

Setting up the Wi-Fi was easy as well, once plugged in you’ll be able to use the printer wirelessly using the Canon Smartphone app. Had no issues setting it up and has been working great.

This printer gives you the capabilities to print both black and white and color, scan and make copies as well. We did a few test prints of artwork and was so impressed with the overall quality…the colors came out great and am sure it would be even better with photo quality paper and more specific print settings.

Overall am very happy with this printer, have no complaints. Would highly recommend if you need an all-in-one printer that is compact and provides great quality prints.
