Useful USB monitoring for a home development setup

I chose this UPS for my home development setup, which includes a Windows workstation and a Raspberry Pi. I travel for work, so being able to monitor the system remotely was an important part of my decision.

So far, I’ve connected the UPS to the Raspberry Pi over USB and checked its status using Network UPS Tools (NUT). I can read the battery charge, load, power status, and estimated remaining runtime. That visibility is useful when the workstation is somewhere I can’t physically reach.

The rackmount format also fits the direction I’m taking with this setup. I’m adding photos to show how it fits into the project.

This is an initial review. I haven’t measured the actual battery runtime or used it long enough to comment on long-term reliability, but the USB monitoring has been a useful part of the setup so far.

Huge design flaw, like nails on a chalkboard. Unit is okay otherwise

Nails on a chalkboard.

That's the sound this unit emits once every 30 seconds.

Searching through various places, you will find that this is the expected behavior of the unit, and it is part of the "self test". It's a very faint noise, but once you hear it, you will be hearing it often.

This isn't mentioned anywhere, and even worse is that the noise often doesn't start for a few weeks / months. Mine started making the noise about 60 days into owning it.

If you are getting this to put in a loud server closet, it's probably fine. I have mine in a closet in the basement, though the noise is still audible a few rooms away (ever so quiet, but just enough to drive you crazy.

Otherwise, the unit works well. Display is helpful to see power draw, weight is as expected for a unit of this size.

I've added a video of the sound (with the unit muted). You'll hear it from the 3-5 second mark, but may need to turn the volume up.

Nice little addition ot my home lab.

Needed this for my home lab, in case of a power outage it will allow my wife to maintain some network connectivity since she works from home everyday.

Horrible quality control and poor customer service

Extremely disappointed with the company CyberPower. I bought the model CP1500PFCRM2U to install in the server rack at my business. After mounting it inside the server rack, I clicked the power button and nothing... Unfortunately, it feels a lot heavier than it really is and was a complete pain unmounting it and removing it from the rack. You can see in the photos that the main LCD screen was completely detached and the circuit board for the power button was also detached. I contacted the company with photos and after a half dozen generic responses was told that they would RMA the product. However, I noticed this in part of the response email "CyberPower does not pay for you to return a product for warranty service; however, CyberPower pays the shipping to return the new or replacement product." Honestly, I feel completely scammed. Why should I have to pay for return shipping when the circuit boards were completely detached when I received the product. I took the front panel off and re-attached both the LCD and circuit board for the power button. There's some sloppy glue preventing me from completely seating the power button but at least I can turn the unit on now. The buttons are kind of sunken into the unit but it is usable. Complete scum move from the company. Also, this review is being tagged for build quality, let me emphasize the build quality was TERRIBLE. Not functional, bad quality control, and poor customer server, do not recommend.

After less than 2 years the battery is dead

2 years with the load mainly being about 100 watts (On the 1000 watt/1500VA model) and always powering down within minutes of a power loss the battery now reports 0 minutes of runtime at 100 watts as soon as it trips.

arrived smashed

I'm told this item is not returnable, even though it was new. So now I am going to dispute it in my credit card and order somewhere else

The Truth

Provides 40 mins of back-up battery for my Ubiquiti network rack

Absolute stellar product.

I have a network rack which comprises of an Ubiquiti NVR, UDM Dream Machine Pro, Pro Max 24 PoE switch, (6) 4K PoE security cameras, and (6) In Wall PoE U6 Access Points, a modem, and a Lutron hub.

The CyberPower powered all these devices for a little over 40 mins after a power outage.

The network did not go down at all during the outage as the UPS kicked in instantly. This was perfect since my video chat with my team at work didn't disconnect or lag at all during the outage.

Also, if I need more runtime for my internet, I can easily unplug the cameras (and even the access points I don't require) and get much time with internet access for my work.

The fact this fits into a 2U slot on the network rack is a cherry on top.

Best UPS Value

Looked a loooong time to find an enterprise grade UPS without paying a fortune. These checked all the boxes: power, true sine wave clean power, and runtime. Plus they're pretty cool looking with the color display. Solid product. No need to spend more.

Goodbye APC, Hello Cyberpower

my APC finally bit the bullet. Wanted a rack mounted UPS. So far, this doesn't disappoint. This looks WAY cooler than the clunky UPS, a big win for the IT groupies.

Love the display and form factor

This eases my worries and looks super clean under my desk. Running a pretty beefy CPU and even with me gaming with a 3080ti pinned at 100% and all my periferials plugged in, I’m pulling almost 800 watts and it has no issues, can last over 5 minutes like that and almost 30 without a heavy load

Excellent Entry 2U UPS for Home Server

Excellent entry level 2U UPS by Cyber Power. Was worried on noise output compared to the next competing UPS by TL and no issues. Currently have a Solar+Bat setup but sadly, Grid is priority and takes less than 2seconds to switch to Solar/Bat from a Grid power outage. This UPS was necessary for these hiccups and as a good secondary backup. Will be powering 2x 2U server AMD based nodes that will either be VMware ESXi or Proxmox hosts for my home server environment for prod/dev.

Node 1 AMD R9 5900X w/128GB DDR4 ECC UDIMM with total of 3x SSDs, 4x HDDs, 1x GPU on a 500W PSU

(Pending)Node 2 AMD R9 7900 w/128GB DDR5 ECC UDIMM with 4x SSDs 500W PSU

UPS currently supports Node 1 and main gaming PC on a AMD R7 7700X w/32GB DDR5 UDIMM AMD RX6650XT w/650 PSU are active and load is at 12% idle. Will be adding 4 home level network devices, 1x DOCSIS 3.1 Cable modem, 1x Router, 1x 5port 1Gb Switch w/PoE. 1x 8port 1Gb Switch. Once Node 2 comes online, the main gaming PC will be unplugged from the UPS.

My only CON about this UPS is that there is no Surge Only Power Port vs other UPS units.

Damaged

Box was delivered in good condition but it wont power on. Upon closer inspection the LED was unmounted and they wouldn’t do anything about it as i am out of the US.

SHOCK AND FIRE HAZARD - CHECK YOURS ASAP

This is for the CP1500PFCRM2U unit.

I couldn’t figure out why none of the bottom row of outlets would provide any power. So I pulled out a couple of outlet wiring testers to find that they all had a floating neutral.

Informed cyberpower tech support but they gave me silly troubleshooting steps. I sent the above photos and haven’t heard anything since. The replacement unit did test okay, thankfully.

Great Capacity & Compact for Wall-Mount Racks

We've used these batteries in a few different locations so far with great results. They have been a great choice for a small wall-mounted solution where the racks aren't as deep as floor standing or rolling racks. A lot of 1500VA rackmount units are very deep. The photo I attached is where we used 2 of these units, one dedicated just to our DVR, and the second dedicated to the firewall and PoE switches powering the network and cameras. With 45 cameras, it still had a runtime estimated at over 45min, which is pretty good considering we were using about 220W total power consumption.

The rack brackets also were sturdy, not allowing the battery to sag as we've seen some do in the past. Lots of room for plugs and transformers in the rear to plug everything in. Would like to see a model in the same physical size with network monitoring capabilities. We will continue to buy and recommend this unit.
