This book is a classic, I read it as a child and bought it for my 5th grader. I selected the “buy new” option for paperback and was sent a very “loved” book that was clearly not new. The book is of course still readable, but if I had wanted a used book, I would have ordered with the used book option. Really disappointed.

Bought it for my 5th grader, and I read it first before giving to her. Found it intense and sad and decided not to give it to her. For example: the little sister the boys thought had fallen in the frozen river and drowned (she didn't); the rebel soldier who accidentally leaned his chest on his bayonet and died from his wounds (strange); the rebel soldier who had an injury and infection and died from hypothermia on a night march in the freezing rain; the rebel troops mocking the dead body of a Hessian soldier they killed... all just a little too much in my opinion to give to my 10-year old.
Also, I will add my personal context, I'm a soldier and combat veteran, and believe in serving community and country. I hope my kids will serve when they grow up, and this isn't content that I think inspires a sense of seevice, and not something I want to give my kids to read.
It's a shame, because I LOVE historical fiction and time travel books, and this should have been a 5-star for me.
After reading it and deciding I wouldn't give it to my kids to read, I read the 'back flap' that indicated that the author wrote this for her son "because she is a pacifist and her son was into GI Joe". So does that mean her intention was to get him and other kids turned off from serving their country? (See attached pic, "About the Author".)
It's well written with nice characters and dialogue, but that's not enough to redeem the lack of substance, so it's a 1-star for me.
