I went with Honeywell and the accordingly Ademco designed/Honeywell manufactured product line due to their exemplary repuation for quality products in the security industry.
I went with the which is enabled for a Total Connect 2.0 security monitoring/home automation account which connects to the equipped with a (which we installed into the panel). We also connected the following wireless sensors/detectors to the alarm panel via the receiver:
• for our three main entry doors.
•
•
•
•
We also purchased a to scare off intruders and alert us to alarms going off anywhere in the house. We already had cable internet and a gigabit wireless router with high level encryption.
So I spent probably the equivalent of about 100 hours researching all aspects of home security and the components we wanted to install to fulfill our security requirements overall. So after purchasing all the equipment and having it delivered to our house we started mounting the equipment. All sensors are wireless via the receiver card which is designed to fit in the alarm panel cabinet (often called "the can"), so there are no other wires to run. If you went the wireless sensor route like we did, remove the two screws on the main board and follow the instructions for mounting the main and receiver boards in the can.
Now here's the most difficult part, and this is where I would suggest getting a licensed installer if your mind turns to mush just reading the manual for all the codes to enter for the numerous panel options. I did, and I manage and configure computer equipment for a living, so don't feel bad about contracting this part out. They'll configure the panel with all the appropriate settings, document all configuration parameters in the book. This documentation should include installer and master codes, configuration codes chosen for each section.
*This is where you'll be programming the Honeywell 5800 PIR-RES Wireless Motion Sensors into the wireless receiver, which ties it into the security panel.*
Now, you can program your Tuxedo Touch after powering up the alarm panel so that it can connect to your wireless router, or use the RJ45 (ie. Cat5e) hardwired connection to said router. Use the installer code which we won't be advertising here since it is in your manual and doesn't need to be handed out to criminals browsing the internet. Your Tuxedo will have access to see (not modify) the status of all sensors programmed into the alarm panel, at least until you enable the AUI addresses on the security panel.
Finally, if you haven't done so already, work with your Security installer and/or Security Representative to activate your monitoring at which point they can provide you the Total Connect 2.0 login for your Tuxedo (and Smartphone if applicable) as well as your alarmnet.com login. Once this is setup, you can monitor the status of your motion sensors, clear faults (faults are when the sensor detects an event) or bypass a fault caused by a malfunctioning sensor.
*Note* These sensors utilize a 3 minute sleep period between the passive infra-red scans to conserve battery power, which is the only reason the batteries last for at least one full year, as required by UL to be UL listed. It's not a defect, it's just the way they can get certified short of requiring electrical wires to be run to them.
