A book can be racist, sexist, intellectually shallow, historically misleading, and nice to look at. D'Aulaire's Book of Greek Myths is exactly that.
I bought it to read with my kid, who already knows Greek mythology well, and we couldn't push through.
The book is intellectually lazy. Greek mythology is fascinating because it is morally complicated. The gods are magnificent and monstrous, creators and destroyers, awe-inspiring but rarely admirable. This book flattens that complexity into meaninglessness. It praises the "good team" as uniquely beautiful and civilized while recounting their murder, incest, vengeance, and cruelty.
The illustrations can be beautiful when they are not making Goebbels's ghost cry tears of joy. Zeus in particular looks cartoonishly propagandy.
The text reinforces a similar idea. It contrasts the Greek “light” gods with other peoples’ “dark” "idols", presenting Greek religion as nobler and more enlightened. Hera is belittled and reduced to a jealous caricature, while Zeus is admired despite the myths’ own portrayal of his cruelty, coercion, infidelity, and abuse. That's as far as we got.
Also, while the authors settled with a very shallow level of engagement with the material, they also made the effort to get very, very preachy. There's a lot of implied lessons on boys being boys, domination, hierarchies and just general social policing preaching that now reads coercive and dated.
We're throwing it away, thank Demeter we got it second hand. I'm not comfortable donating this.

Good Greek Pantheon Primer
This is a great introduction to Greek myths. I had been suggested this as a quick familiarization with the Greek pantheon as I was about to begin The Odyssey. My 9-year-old saw some of the pictures and asked to read it along with me. How could I say no? It took me just a little bit longer, but it provided some great and interesting stories - some I knew and some I didn't - and it did help with some of the gods/goddesses in Homer. There are other story versions and deeper parts of the story, but this is a good puddle jumper story for older kids and older adults who enjoy being a kid. The pictures are unique in their own right and add that classical nature from a personal touch style. If you're going to get into the Greek myths for your kids or for yourself, this is one I would recommend starting with. Also, a good primer for the classical education style. Final Grade - A

Disappointed
I Love this book. I got it when I was young and misplaced it. I was happy I found it but unfortunately this book was not sent in an appropriate shipping box and was damaged. It was Warped, Bent and Torn. I was very disappointed. Books should be treated with care. I would have paid a little extra for the shipping box.

TERRIBLE CONDITION NOT GOOD!
A picture is worth a thousand words. This book is obviously not in “good “ condition. Sold as “good “ by Hippo books.

You won't be disappointed!
I have been searching for a book of Greek myths suitable for my 8-year-old daughter that simplifies the retelling but holds true to the basic stories and won’t give her nightmares. Each tale in this book is the perfect length for a bedtime story, is wonderfully illustrated, and blends right into the next by cleverly ending one tale with a character or place from the next story. It is an oversized book (12.25" x 9") which was unexpected but makes it that much more special to read. Highly recommend...and I may even get more for gifting!

Great book to introduce children to Greek mythology
Great book to introduce children to Greek mythology. Captivating writing and beautiful illustration. 5 stars. I just have two suggestions, if an editor/publisher happens to be reading this -- 1. I went through the book and annotated it with the many etymology and culture references (see attached picture), before I gave to my child to read. I don't mind doing it, but wouldn't it be great if the book comes with such annotations? 2. It would be great to have pronunciation guide of names, in the text, in footnotes, or in the appendix.

Great introduction to Greek Mythology
Ordered this book from the Philippines since this book isn't available here. Had it delivered via UPS (Shipping costs more than the book) and arrived within the week. The book was as I imagined it to be and more and my 7 year old daughter devoured the book as soon as she opened the parcel. Great introduction to Greek Mythology. Very well worth it! 👍

Great introduction to Greek mythology
This was a great book to prepare my son for our trip to Greece. He had a much better appreciation for the sights and was very excited when he saw the ruins in person.
