The History of the Tasteful “Uneven” Edge!

The book itself has many great and informative reviews, and I can offer that my 14 y/o daughter has very much enjoyed it. I think it’s opened her eyes to the experiences of others and she’s commented daily what a great read it has been. Anything that can create a love of quality reading in a young teen is a win to me!

I’m writing because I got a chuckle from all the reviews complaining about “poor printing quality,” owing apparently to the uneven edges of pages, as viewed from the side. These are obviously not people who have done much reading! Most will know, but for those who may not - this “deckle edge” is a style of publishing, done intentionally, and is actually rather tasteful and traditional. It also makes it easier to turn pages, although that it not its purpose or origin. In the not-too-distant past, well into the 19th century, books were published uncut - the reader would use a paper knife to cut the folded edges while reading, resulting in a book with that uneven, “deckled” look. And it’s a treat to come across those old, truly hand-cut books and realize that you’re seeing the work of that copy’s original reader, centuries ago! Today deckling is a stylistic choice, cut by machine but imparting a look and feel of timelessness and higher quality. I like that they’ve chosen it for this one. Sad we’ve come to a point where people view it oppositely, history eroding all around us…

An easy-to-read memoir

This was a beautifully written one. I’ve never read a memoir in poem form but it was lovely, easy to understand yet still so profound and insightful. I love that some of the poems were connected as well. I could draw the dots and find the references as I went further along in the collection. If you like memoirs but don’t always like the heaviness of them then this would be a perfect read for you.

BEAUTIFUL

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Brown Girl Dreaming tells the story of the author's childhood in beautifully written free verse poetry. Jacqueline Woodson is candid and vulnerable as she tells her reader what it was like growing up in Ohio, in the south in South Carolina, and in Brooklyn. Her recounts are moving and evoke strong emotions while maintaining a soft and gentle feel for the younger reader.

Very bad finishing

The finishing obviously hasnt been done. The paper edges are rough and uneven. Looks like the paper was cut by hand and left unfinished even after the binding was done. Will not recommend to anyone. I seem to be stuck with this product because it is too much of a hassle to return it and my son needs it for school next week.
