A part of history we should all know about!

Based on the incredible true story of the Lithuanian book ban, and the courageous people who tirelessly fought for their freedom. This book was well written, impossible to put down, and inspiring.

Literally and figuratively

The words on fire are not only the words in books that are burned but also the fiery ideas and words in a writer's mind and heart. Author Jennifer Nielsen has captured that perfectly in this book.

I received the uncorrected proof in June 2019 and read it over a few days. It took around 6 hours total and the story seemed to move quickly and drew me in immediately.

Historical fiction can be a great tool to associate emotions with certain events and I have found that it can help to provide a greater understanding of how people may have experienced actual historical events as well as providing a greater understanding of the event itself. I found myself tearing up for the characters toward the end of this book which I something I don't do very often.

The main character in the book is a 12 year old Lithuanian girl and I read the entire book as though I were seeing the events through the eyes of a 12 year old reader. I was a little surprised to find out afterwards that the recommended age range for this book is 8 to 11 years old. I personally think that is a little young especially since the book is over 300 pages long, includes no pictures, and deals with parental deaths, military occupation by a foreign country, and issues of authoritarian figures controlling people through what was essentially culture ban.

There is a friendship formed by the young people but there are no romantic undertones. It is a book that is chock full of the themes of courage, bravery, and honor as well as making choices.

This book is historical fiction surrounding the actual Russian occupation of Lithuania when certain books were banned in order to erase the culture, language, and even the very idea of the people of Lithuania. There is no specific discussion of the types of books banned other than that the books ran the gamut of subjects and audiences.

The book is scheduled for release October 1, 2019 and the only issues I have as the book currently is would be 1) the recommended age range seems young for the subject matter and 2) there should be illustrations of map areas covered in the book to provide a greater historical understanding of areas involved the the historical book ban.

I highly recommend this book though I think it may be more for kids closer to age 12 and up.

A good book for middle schoolers and above who like history

I started reading this to see whether I could recommend this book for young teens / young adults. It's an interesting book about a young girl in occupied Lithuanian. Russia has banned anything that deals with the Lithuanian culture. Audra, the girl, is given a secret package that she must deliver to a specific person. The book continues the story of Audra's journey and how she becomes involved in the resistance movement. A very good that tells the story of the history of Lithuanian.
