Flexibility and Creativity Pedal

Dude, seriously. My last compresspr pedal died. I needed a new Compressor and this was it.

A Love/Hate Relationship

Maybe I received a used one, but I'm not sure. What I will say is that it had some paint imperfections, there wasn't a pick or pin included in the package, and the internal trimpot is far too delicate. Also the box was pretty worn.

What I do like:

It's a pretty good Orange Squeezer. I love the idea of a rat being a console style distortion to add warmth or grit, depending on the gain level. I think turning it to max and then backing it up just slightly is the way to go. It never reaches full saturation due to the nature of the pedal (and the blend knob) so it works best as a way to make it a vintage warmth switch. It's not a full on overdrive. This is good - It's an awesome recording tool. I've enjoyed it on both guitar and bass.

What I don't like:

It's noisy. It hisses constantly, and it hisses loud. I'm not really a fan of that at all, and it makes me want to return to my DynaComp. While I would absolutely consider the Pulp n' Peel to be more transparent than the DynaComp, I think the Dynacomp's low noise (no hiss) and tighter compression makes for a much better sounding compressor overall. Personally, I prefer it's tone. I can't get a chewy compression out of the Pulp n' Peel circuit. It nails the jangle, however - So it at least wins on one of the two sounds I love. On the other hand, it even makes a ton of noise when using the toggle switch/knobs. Speaking of the switch, it doesn't always activate. If you don't press it really hard it'll miss your press. None of this is acceptable at the price point...

The trimpot for the gain! Ugh. I love the rat being included. I love it being used as a subtle console style dirt. It's a killer feature.

I hate the trimpot. It's soft and delicate and strips if you even look at it the wrong way. Do I need to exchange? Should I replace the trimpot myself? Could I somehow fit a full size knob in here? I'm not sure, honestly. I think out of the box it should have came with a mini knob on the side so you wouldn't have to worry about damaging the cheap trimpot. I mean, damaging it more than it already was when I opened it.

In a weird way I wish they had chosen the "best" resistance for the dirt circuit and just excluded the trim knob all together. It's stressing me out.

I want to love this pedal but it's leaving me with some solid frustrations. Mostly the noise levels and the trimpot, as you could imagine. Also the fact that I didn't get any of the extras with mine. It's great for the sounds I'm going for, I'll admit, and I'd hate to lose out on the dirt toggle but the Dynacomp seems to be a lot more reliable overall. Maybe JHS just isn't for me. This is my second JHS pedal and the second time I've been left feeling lukewarm on the experience. The attention to detail just isn't there, and it makes the products feel overpriced. I had such high hopes too, this has the potential to be an insane recording tool.

Maybe I'll try the Hard Drive next. It's based on my favorite distortion pedal after all.

Not as in the picture

I bought one. Sounds awesome but mine doesn't have a buffer switch. I am very angry!
