Great but makes odd sound
Works well, easy to use, portable.
Points taken off because the connector due to how loud it is. The player periodically sounds like a small vacuum when reading.

The interface board in the drive's enclosure is clearly not USB3. The internal USB Mini B connector and the INIC-1618N chip on the board are only USB2.
In theory, this does not affect the speed of an 8x/24x drive, but it can affect its interaction with other devices on the same USB bus which could lead to burn failures. It also means that the enclosure would be poor candidate for upgrading to Blu-ray in the future.
Of the two units I purchased, one included a 'Slimtype DVD A DS8A8SH KC2D' drive from 2011. Although Windows 11 25H2 recognized the device, the drive itself could not read discs. The other unit has a 'HL-DT-ST DVD+-RW GTA0N A1C0' drive from 2015 which works ok when used as a reader.
If you just need to read some discs, this product might be useful to you in spite of its inaccurate description. However, since the enclosure is only USB2, the included drive itself can vary, and their quality assurance is ineffective, there is nothing about this item (except for maybe the inclusion of a USB-C to USB-A adapter) that makes it a better choice than less expensive options that appear cosmetically identical.

Device delivered as advertised. A little noisy at times, but works well with my Chromebook.

Works fine, just took a bit to set up. Showed as "hp DVDRW DA8AESH USB Device" in Device Manager. But works fine! Hardly makes a sound, but did rub the paint off near the center of the disk, but the DVD still works. Super light too and durable!

I have a brand new mac book & every time I try to use this dvd drive it’s about 50/50 if it will work or not. I usually have to turn my computer off & on, unplug & replug the drive & eventually it will work, but not very well. it’s very finicky!

If you are using a MacBook / iOS system I would suggest to stay away! The DVDs play, but the media will randomly pause to load and if you need to rewind it freezes. I’ve watched about three movies using the player and each one has the same issue. It’s so frustrating. I’m sure it’s the disc player. I’ll be returning it for a different brand soon.

The best worked perfectly with my 2024 MacBook Air I was able to import all of my grandfathers music into my computer I’m very happy. The CDs were all heavily scratched, and they were able to be imported and sound perfectly clear. I am very impressed and I highly recommend.

I LOVE IT i was able to download a dvd player on the microsoft store and it was instantly playing

Did not come in any protective packaging, the front display for the disc tray was hanging off, and discs were not being burned, resulting in wasted blank discs. This was a replacement for another defective device.

Got a Saw 2004 DVD for Christmas and got this so I could watch it on my laptop. Works great and I love the little indent at the bottom to store the cord. Reads my DVD just fine, super compact.

It seems to work with my MacBook, but very often it gets disconnected or it goes off-line. I have to unplug it and plug it back in to continue copying files. Don’t think it’s a good product

I bought this for today's "modern" laptops, that have no CD drive in them. I still like my CDs, and ITunes. To me, hard copies are a must for music.
This external drive, has a built in USB-A cable that stores under the unit, in a recessed track, so its nice to transport. The cable also powers the drive from the laptop. The front eject button pops it open, and like traditional drives, you pull it open when it releases. It is designed and acts like a built in drive. I don't see any lag out of the ordinary, and it's fairly quiet. It still has a whirring sound, likely more noticeable, standing alone, but not loud.
Mine came with the front edge trim, loose on one side. Examining it, I was able to re-secure it, just gently snapping back in place.
For the money, I feel I made a good choice. I've used it, about five or six times already without any issues. It plays CDs directly out of your speakers when needed, but have not yet, tried playing a DVD.

Excelente calidad de lectora, muy silenciosa y rápida. Su construcción es más robusta que otras que he tenido por lo que estoy muy satisfecho con el producto.

Bought this CD/DVD external drive to play Christmas CD's. It plays well connected to my HP laptop.

USB cord is very short. Plan to put it Right next to your computer.
Type-C adapter doesn't have a storage spot on the player.
Since the adapter Type-C fits my Android Samsung S21 (charge port) I thought it might work on my phone. No it doesn't. If I'd read the booklet specifications (see pic), I wouldn't have tried. Not compatible with Chrome OS. If you have a Type-C port on your computer, you may find it useful. In which case you can keep it plugged into your computer. There's no storage spot on the player.
Overall
5* it works
4* the cord is very short
3* the Type-C adapter has no storage spot
3* Type-C adapter doesn't allow Android to play CD/DVDs
Not the fault of the CD player but I have to disconnect my Mouse to use my only USB port

Since my new all-in-one PC (Windows 11 OS) doesn't have a built-in CD/DVD drive, or even a way to install one any other way, I had to go the USB route. This is a very good quality drive for reading and burning CDs and DVDs. It's very easy to install and setup... just plug in the USB cable! The CD write speed is up to 48x, and the DVD write speed is up to 16x (I use Nero). I haven't encountered any errors or skipping while playing or burning discs in this drive.

This worked fine when we got it, on a PC with Windows 10 (used it twice). Tried it on 2 new PCs with Windows 11, and it isn't recognized as a device (see photo for error message). Guess I'll keep it until we throw our last Windows 10 PC out. Recommend buying a different brand that is compatible with Windows 11.

Looks identical to the last two that I bought with a different name that were both broken within 3 or 4 times use. So far so good on this one.

It doesn't work! Don't waste your money.

Read and believe the other 1-star reviews. I didn't and now I'm writing one.
First, despite the fact that the black cases, emblazoned with the name "Laurensory" are the same, the internal parts are from two different manufacturers. MakeMKV displays the internal info of the drives, and I've got the two side-by-side in the snip. Manufacturer A is HL-DT-ST, and Manufacturer B is Matshita. So maybe the higher-starred reviews have different internal parts than the ones I got and they work. No way to tell. What I can tell is that mine don't work.
Second, note that one of the drivesshows "No Disc Inserted." The other snip shows that as the ripping starts, "MEDIUM NOT PRESENT" starts to display. That's because one of the two drives randomly ejects the disc. It might play through, or it might eject it as soon as you put it in. Whatever, it doesn't work. I've tried it on a number of discs and can't isolate any particular reason. It doesn't work.
The other drive seems to struggle to rip movies to MKV, often failing. I take the disc out of that drive and pop it into my ten+ year old external drive and it reads it fine. As do both of my internal drives. And yes, I did unplug it from the powered USB hub and plug directly into the PC. Same failures. It doesn't work, either.
Shun these drives. They don't work.

Kinda annoyed, because it will not work on my USB3 ports. Luckily I have a TypeC, because it's the only port it wanted to work on. A bit slow, but in the end works. Did what I got it for so I won't complain, but I can't recommend neither, sadly.

I needed a usb-c interface like it was advertised but I was very disappointed to find that it was not.

Product arrived promptly and works just as described. This will make it easier to read and copy music from old CDs

It so nice and little, super easy to use. Works great! We have a group we hold on zoom where we show videos, so it works perfect.

I love everything

The device just doesn't work. Not on Mac, not on Linux, not on Windows 11. It starts when you insert a regular CD disk and stops in some 2 minutes. Either you listen to the disk or trying to rip it to mp3 for further use without the disk.
Disappointment!
Catherine Morris
Quality of the videos played on this DVD. Is great. Easy hook-up. Instructions are easy to read and understand.
