Nice software and features, works well. Need to wake up the camera is not always seamless
This is not my first Lorex camera. I have three others at the moment. One an inside one, and the other two are tied to some outside flood lights. I opted to get this one as I like the software. It has for the most part been quite reliable.
WHAT YOU GET:
**** Camera itself
**** Mounting base (using a tripod nut to secure)
**** Screws with anchors for this
**** Warranty info
**** Transformer
**** USB standard to C cable
**** Sticker for mounting screw location
**** Sticker for warning of camera surveillance
SETUP:
For this camera you need the new Lorex Connect app and to have a registration with Lorex. As I already had that, I did not need to do this part.
NOTE: Setup is done using the app prompts, so this step really must be first.
As a person who has set up many iOT items like cameras, they are getting so easy now, this is really a workable solution.
The other thing you should do is to put the phone you will be using for this on the network that you intend the camera to connect to. As we have both 5G and 2.4G networks, I often have to switch before I do the set up. Per the instructions this camera is dual band, so this may not be an issue. Automatically I put it on a 2.4G one, like all the others require.
You need to plug in the camera. This camera needs to be charged since it is intended to be a battery camera outside. .
In my case, I tend to do the setup on my desk, so I can do the whole thing from there, but for best results, you want to be in the vicinity of where this will be mounted in case there is any issue with the strength of the signal. We have a couple of issues like that and alternative connections for those cases.
Within the software, you add the camera, put in your WiFi info (make sure you have your WiFi password handy.). Very quickly you will be looking at a live view from the camera. Turn down your sound otherwise you will get a reverberating echo. Voila you are done.
In my case, I decided to add an SD card, which is not included. I had one from the camera that this one was replacing. I popped it into this camera and was shocked at how seamless that was. It acknowledged the card and immediately prompted for its formatting. I never had a camera do this so well.
The camera needed a SW update and that went well. Warned me that it would be offline for a moment while doing this. That was a nice touch.
USAGE:
Initially when I set this up, I noted it was the first camera that tended to go to sleep and needed to be woken up, to display a picture in the app. As you can see in my photos the other camera I have does not do that. Mind you that the other one is always plugged in. So this might be a power-saving thing since this is a battery camera.
NEEDS TO BE WOKEN UP:
However when I got this camera, I also got a solar panel, so I did not have to charge it regularly. With that I have not yet figured out how to turn off this need to be woken option. It does make it slower to view the livefeed. I have a number of other battery cameras that don’t do this, so I wanted to change this. It is especially annoying when you select the camera to look at and you have to click in the picture area again to get it to display. Why would I select the camera if I did not want to see what was going on??
So while this camera does a nice job of capturing events, has a nice picture and all the features I want, I really detest needing to wake it up. Also sometimes it is slow to respond and times out. I don’t know why. The WiFi signal is strong where it is, so that is not the issue. And it is 100% charged.
At one point in time, I thought it had quit, since multiple tries could not wake it. Until I walked down and stood in front of it, I could not access it. Standing in front of it, registered an event and that made it accessible. As I have placed it in my front entrance to see if I have packages that were delivered much of my use will be at a distance and not right after an event. So this concerns me.
Based on this alone, I’m taking away 1 star. I have sent an email to the company to see if there is a resolution for this. I have searched all through the FAQs and menus and found none.
