Second time I got this tape measure. I like the easy to read tape, which is better than milwaukee's, but the belt clip is flimsy, and the lack of a magnet at the end is inconvenient sometimes. A couple of weeks into using it i noticed that it makes a noise when the tape is retracted quickly.

Works as should and very easy to read.

Opened the package and inside was two tiny pieces of plastic. The locking mechanism is broken. So much for the 'shockforce'...

The plastic locking mechanism just disintegrated inside the body. I've barely had this for 3 months and probably used it less than 10 times. Never dropped it. Now it's practically useless since I can't hold it open anymore and it's beyond the refund/return window. Very disappointed because it has great visibility.

I am a professional carpenter and bought this after seeing a positive review online. I also liked how it looked, it was interesting and different. After using it on-site, I discovered the following.
1) It is easy to read but the transitional green squares at the footmarks threw me off a little.
2) The tape is tough and can extend a long distance if needed, but the recoil is aggressive and can cause minor superficial cuts/scrapes to your hands.
3) The hooks, both top and bottom are great but also can be bent easily due to their elongated extension.
4) It is robust, and can take a drop or two. The tape itself can scratch easily.
5) It has one major flaw -- The metal that connects the hook to the tape on the bottom will often "catch" the wood you are measuring, potentially causing you to cut the wrong measurement. See photos. I'm returning to the FatMax but if this flaw is addressed I'd buy this product again.
On the whole, a great new take on an old tool. I really like it, it has a lot of potential. Once this minor flaw is addressed I'll buy it again.
I hope this review helps. With some minor engineering adjustments, I foresee this brand being one of the most popular in the near future.

Probably the worst tape measure ever, it is easy to read but one use measuring an office and it was banged up and bent up and twisted! One use! Terrible!

I bought this for the price and the ratings. Lufkin has always struck me as a reputable brand. I was measuring 2x4s today and allowed the tape to snap back as I always do. Made my cut and grabbed the next 2x4 and the tape. Tried to hook the end of the 2x4 and nothing happened. Tried again and still nothing. Looked at the tape measure and there was no end. Looked on the ground and found it. 18 months? Really? Looks like cheap pot metal. So disappointing. Won’t be buying Lufkin again.

The reach of the tape when extended was no better than a Dewalt or Stanley so item not worth the extra money. Gave it to my husband for Father’s Day so only just over a month old and it broke today and it wasn’t from doing anything excessive with it, just wore out really quickly. See pictures. He uses a tape measure on a daily basis for work and around home. He always wears tape measure on his jeans, and on this tape measure the clip is so tight it tore up pocket on two pair of jeans. Nice that the clip is sturdy but way too rigid and tight and wrecking all his jeans so we were planning on buying a new one. He is a contractor and goes thru about one tape measure a year. This one is not contractor worthy.

A tape you can actually use!
I have not put this tape through its paces yet, but here’s what I have assessed from first impressions and comparisons to other tapes I’ve used.
Pros: The outer construction feels durable. I like the *diamond coated end hook, that’s a feature I’ve not had on a tape before. This tape has four rivets attaching the end hook to the tape; I prefer this to the 3 rivets that are typical to many tape measures. Another nice feature is the metal through hole that can be used as a pivot or for a tether. I like that the bottom of the tape measure body is **flat, the way a tape measure should be designed. The black and high visibility green combination “nite eye” scheme doesn’t bother my eyes. I kind of like the change. The measurements on the bottom side of the blade would come in handy for vertical measurements or for illustrating distances to someone below you… I’m sure there are other uses for it that I haven’t thought of yet. The belt clip is removable (using a Phillips #0 screwdriver) so that you can fit it into your tape pouch without the clip slicing up your pouch. The ***lock works great! The metal guardrails that protect the lock button is a well thought out feature. I’m very impressed with the overall design of this tape.
Cons: The blade feels a bit thin/flimsy, I expected it to feel a little thicker. I would also like to see some type of clear blade armor on at least the first 6”. Aside from the two cons this tape measure is great! If the two cons I listed are a non-issue to you, I would definitely recommend this tape.
*Keep in mind that tapes with diamond coated end hooks should be used for rough carpentry and not wise to use on finished surfaces, fine finishes or delicate surfaces.
** There’s at least one manufacturer that makes the bottom of their tape measure bodies rounded. The rounded bottom design of other tape bodies makes it difficult to keep them upright while making measurements, horrible design!
***I have bought two different tapes recently that the lock either couldn’t prevent the tape from winding in or the lock was difficult to engage/disengage.
