Impressive sound quality!

I lack experience with walkie talkies and their most common features…which makes my successful understanding of these, and their functions, an absolute testament to their intuitive design. Range is impressive, walls…even brick walls, do not inhibit function. Communication is clear and understandable.

Excellent Range

These Midland radios are a nice set, and you get a great range out of them. I have had several sets of radios and range seems to be the common issue. These are the best I have had, as far as range is concerned. They can cover up to 250,000 square feet, which is approximately 5.74 acres, and up to 20 floors. That’s A LOT of coverage area.

I really like that they come with an all-in-one charging base. The base makes it easy to see if any radios are missing at the end of the night and it lets you charge them all at once, so they are ready to go each day. It has indicator lights to let you know which radios are charged and which ones are still charging, making it easy to see which one to grab when you need to swap out.

The radios themselves are well made and should be able to stand up to the demands of daily use. I really like the smaller size, as that allows even us ladies to clip them inside of our (much smaller) jean pockets.

These radios are VERY easy to use. If you have ever used a radio before these will be a no brainer. The battery life lasts all day, they work great and I really couldn’t be happier with them.

but the cost…

This set provides an all-in-(mostly)-one option to get you and your crew up and running. I don’t know much about radios such as these, so for my purposes, I just wanted them to work right out of the box. Every single one of these radios had some power when I received them, so seeing if I could figure these out was quick and to my delight, easy! There are instructions included of course and I recommend checking them out, but as someone who has never assembled or used a radio prior, I can attest that it is pretty straightforward and intuitive.

The multi-charging base felt pretty lightweight to me, and I had concerns about its stability. So far however, it has not been an issue. The base features six radio slots as well as an additional six slots for batteries. I was pleased to discover that both a battery and a radio can be charged in the same slot at the same time. Additional batteries can be purchased to consistently have a backup, without having to use a different charging base.

We got these radios for a semi-annual event that we participate in. The event space itself is 46000sf/28000 unobstructed, and the important aspects of those numbers being the portion that is behind other walls. The wifi, while free and open, is very patchy and unreliable, even in the exterior areas. Having a means to quickly and reliably communicate with our team is absolutely a game-changer. Within the 28k open area there is no issue at all getting in touch with everyone. 28k is well within the indicated range of these radios, so I expected nothing less. For testing purposes, we sent someone out to the far corner of the parking lot where the food trucks were, and while I do not know the exact distance, it was more than the length of the event hall itself. The sound was easily understood and without static, even when the person went around the corner of another building. Ultimately, it seems like the range is excellent over at least 80k square feet of mostly open territory.

Operation of the radios is very basic and easy to understand. Pick a channel, gather on it, and use the PTT button to talk. One younger member of our crew was not aware that you cannot both talk and listen at the same time, so be aware of that. The controls are easily recognizable and pleasantly resistant to the elements, with the buttons being covered and waterproof; these radios are heavy duty. I appreciate the red light indicator when talking, as there is no audible indicator when using the PTT button. This is beneficial for situations where you don’t want to hear the radio functions all the time, but the last experience I had with push to talk was when I had the phone that offered that feature, and that had a notification tone.

After our event, we unplugged the charging base. Over 30 days later and the radios still have power. There is no level indicator, only a low-battery light, so I don’t know how much, but power is there.

We did not have the benefit of a microphone/earpiece with these radios because we wanted to make sure they did what we needed first, but we will likely invest in those. It’s less about privacy than the ability to hear with more focus in loud circumstances. I have not seen any kind of generic earpiece option, so that means it would need to be Midland, which is not a concern as quality goes, but the cost of outfitting six radios with earpieces in addition to the cost of the radios will definitely be off-putting to many users.

Overall, the base price of this set is what I think folks will take most issue with. Having had them for nearly two months now, I have a little more knowledge than when I started, but with my limited experience, I am not seeing features that justify the price difference.

Excellent range

These walkie talkies are commercial grade business walkie talkies. They have an excellent range, and are very durable and well made. The charging base lets you charge all 6 units plus extra batteries if you have them. They sound clear and loud and work well.

Lightweight but good quality. Over 200,000 ft. Range.

These radios work great. The battery's charge lasts more than 12 hours with regular use. The range is over 200,000 ft.

No subscription service is needed to make them operate.

They are lightweight, but well-built. Which is sometimes a difficult combination to make. They have 16 channels to use. The volume is good. The voice is clear. The antenna is easy to replace; simply screw in/off. The charging base is not too bulky and store and charge the phones easily.

This is an excellent option for construction sites, hunting, warehouse space, car dealerships, and similar businesses and hobbies that require quick and easy voice conversation over distant spaces.

Good Radio, but.....

This is a review with some definite pros and cons. The radios themselves are pretty darn good, but the value proposition is where things get complicated. I’ll break it down.

The Good:

These radios feel very durable with a good fit and finish. The range is on par with most other handhelds of this size, and the audio quality is good and gets plenty loud. The voice prompts are clear and easily understood. They are very easy to use.

A few things really stand out. First, the antennas are removable and use a standard SMA connector, which is a huge bonus as you can easily upgrade them. Second, they are compatible with standard Baofeng/Kenwood plug accessories (like hand mics) and programming cables, so you don't need to buy proprietary gear. I also like that they don't have the annoying emergency alarm and flashing light feature that many similar radios have. The gang charger is also a beast; it will charge the 6 radios and has bays to charge 6 additional batteries all at the same time.

The Bad:

The programming software is free from the manufacturer's website, but as of now, you cannot use CHIRP to program these. The gang charger, while useful, is also a bit larger than it needs to be in my opinion.

My biggest issue, and it's a massive one, is the price. I cannot understand why these are so friggen expensive. Honestly, you can get a set of Retevis or B-tech business radios for a quarter of the price, and they will do the exact same thing. Even if the competitor's radios don't last as long, you could literally buy three more complete sets for the price of this one bundle.

Conclusion:

All in all, as much as I like the radios themselves, they are a fail for me on price alone. They are solid, well-built radios that do their job well. However, I just cannot come up with a compelling reason that they are worth four times more than the competition that offers the same functionality.

Stop spending too much money on Motorola

These Radio are absolutely amazing!!!! I would give them 6 stars if it was available!! They are very loud, clear, and light weight. They seem to be very durable and look like they could take a lot of abuse. I like when you select the channel it tells you what channel you’re on. I plan on buying 4 more of them and the multi-charger.
