Failed after 15 months.

This charger worked well for about 15 months, charged exactly as expected at 40Amps. Mounted it indoors, to a NEMA 14-50 outlet.

Good: The cable between the unit and the plug is a good distance, and allows for more convenient mounting and placement. The the charger holder is convenient and keeps things neat.

Bad: This unit died 3 months after the warranty expired. I see that newer Mustart units have a 24 month warranty, this one was 12. It displayed "RELAY STICK" and stopped charging, indicating that the relay contacts inside the unit were physically welded together.

Had to submit a video of troubleshooting steps, and was told that it was out of warranty and offered a 40% off coupon on a new charger, which I declined. I would not recommend this product due to its short life.

Well built but screen is too small.

This charger was sent to me by Mustart Customer Service after the initial one I bought failed due to heat generated at the J1772 connector (portable model with color screen).

This one is better built than the colored screen one. It has a bigger gauge wire and the J1772 connector is made of a better quality plastic and hook system.

Only thing is the size of the screen that is ridiculously small.

Delivers 9.2KW of charging power on my Tesla and ID.4 vehicles without any issue or heat.

Works perfectly, solidly well built, excellent power delivery

I have been using this portable charge cable on a KIA EV6 for a few years and it delivers a reliable and consistent charge every time. It is extremely well built, has a long, thick, flexible 25’ cable to extend from my outdoor plug to my car, and is easy and safe to use.. Also, if you ever have any questions about the cables, customer service at Mustart gets back to you right away.

Save some more money and buy a better charger

I only gave them 2 stars cause they actually have decent support. This charger however is not a good one. While it does the job, the materials used are not of good quality. There is rust buildup on the terminal ends(picture) and then a piece of plastic came undone and blocked my car's charging port. This lead to me having to take my car to the dealership to take the piece of plastic out costing me over $300 to unplug the battery for them to safely take the piece out. As I had mentioned before, I had to contact their support line before because the first charger I received broke after only a few months of usage. This was the second one I used. Needless to say, I no longer use this charger.

This Charger is Perfect

My family has been using this Charger since 2019 for our Pacifica Ev and Ford lightning. It has been super reliable and charges really quickly. The customer service from Mustart has been excellent too. I highly recommend this Charger!

Lasted 6 months then broke, customer service is subpar! However after 21 emails

Material and the carrying case could be better quality. The plastic scratched very easily. Charger stopped working after 6 months. Customer service sends you to vmail...email is barely any better. Waiting for a rep to get back with me after sending requested Info over a week ago. No one had called me back. Got several emails saying that they were sorry the product stopped working and they would make it right. Yet I went 5 days without hearing back from them even after I made the video they request, including having to send it as a link. So after 21 emails ans

They even sent it express. The product isn't bad. Works well. Customer service is that of a smaller new company. All in all I am satisfied with the outcome.

My $379 investment lost to a 25 cent failed piece of their metal

My $379 product is now WORTHLESS because the cast aluminum metal clip that connects the charger handle to the car (and activates the "on" switch) broke. I believe this is a manufacturing failure, not caused by me, the user. The cast-metal clip was fatigued and failed, despite my taking excellent care of the product. I live in temperate climate, our temperatures only rarely fall below freezing, so I believe the cause of this metal fatigue is shoddy work by the manufacturer.

The seller disclaims any responsibility, cannot repair my unit, and has no spare parts to sell me. Honestly? The product warranty is 2 years, I have had this for 3 yrs and 2 months. I am not trying to do something dangerous like repair the electronics. There is nothing wrong with the electronics. For their sub-par 25 cent piece of cast metal, I will have to throw away my $379 investment. That's outrageous.

Would you take that deal on a product you needed to buy? If you would not, then you should not buy this piece of junk.

"Customer Service" responded with a terse, rude reply. After I complained further they responded with more details and suggested I "go to the hardware store and ask if there are applicable accessories for sale," but no offer to find a solution to make this situation better. Translation: "We Don't Care!"

I suppose I will have to buy a new charger. But I can guarantee you I will not buy a Mustart or any other brand name under which it masquerades.

Received a used product.

Purchase this is a new product. What I received was used. It clearly has large amounts of wear and tear all over different pieces of it. I've posted a video of me unboxing it. Sure it works, but when you pay a premium for new you should be getting new.

Lots of power and detailed display

I installed the 14-50 outlet in our garage to use this charger. It has a very detailed display (but a bit small), which has total power output and charging time since being plugged in, AC current draw, and output current/voltage/power output.

Works Great on Mercedes B250e! Full charge in less than 3 hrs!

Solid construction, no complaints on that. Fit is just a bit snug on my car's port, but it can be handled by wife, so no real problems there. It does regulate output at 39 Amps quite well, considering my 240V jumps around quite a bit. It also only gets a little warm to the touch, which is expected when pumping juice at about 9.6Kw! That is faster than most public Level 2 chargers out there! Yet it never gets hotter than 35DegC on the display, so I'm satisfied it is not overloaded. I'll have to monitor how it does in the summer. The important numbers are the small ones on the bottom row (see 1st pic) showing voltage, current and power. The only complaints are that I had to install the NEMA 14-50 plug upside down (with the ground contact up) to allow for easy cable routing as seen in the pictures, which I'm not sure will pass a house inspection. This allows me to keep the display upright without having to make an 'S' with the plug cable (2nd pic). Also the wall installation kit is a bit clunky, meaning the clamps work, but need some extra padding added (I used pipe insulation foam) so they don't damage the cable insulation over time. Using enclosed clamps, the block does not fit flush against the wall, tending to move around, so I jammed more pipe insulating foam behind it. That works perfectly well and allows for some give. I don't expect to use this as a portable unit at all (how many accessible NEMA 14-50s are out there?), but I can still take it off the wall fairly easily and put it in the car. Have only been using it for about 1 month and have had no problems yet. Just make sure you have a red light when you plug in (which I agree is at bit counter-intuitive) and you are going to charge as fast as possible with a level 2 station. The big lesson I learned from this, is to find exactly the fastest Level 2 charge rate your specific EV can handle first and then buy that sized charger. For my Mercedes B250e it is 9.6Kw or 40 Amps. That means it can charge its 28Kw battery from zero to 100% in under 3 hrs. Chargers can be rated in Amps or Kw which convert with the simple Power equation: Power = Voltage * Current. Voltage is 240V, so it is easy to size your home level 2 station to the max capacity of you car. Most of the time, our car is 100% charged in less than an hour after getting home and plugging in. Great upgrade for sure!

Inexpensive but good quality

This review is for the older 40A version. This thing is a beast! The cables are very heavy duty. This thing is definitely made for the higher power charging situations.

There was no problem charging my Kia Niro EV at full speed (see picture — the limiting factor is the car, not the EVSE) and my parent’s Chrysler Pacifica PHEV at the same rate. Impressive! The temp on the display didn’t exceed 34 degrees Celsius.

Great EV Charger!

This charger has been doing great with my 2019 Chevy Bolt with no issues. I had a 14-50 plug installed (RV 50 amp) with a dedicated 50 amp breaker. Cord is thick and sturdy and long enough (25ft) to go across Garage to charge if needed.

Try it or DIY it

Great charger, use for chevy bolt ev

Charges far quicker than the standard 12v for my chevy bolt ev. Charges from a dead low battery to full in about 8hrs. That's 240ish miles on the battery once charged

MUSTART 40V is super easy

The charger has a screen to inform the user of voltage, amperage, and total Kwh. It hangs easily from its built in loop.

Perfectly serviceable intelligent extension cord.

Bought this and installed a 240v 50a line to stop the competition between me and my wife over who got access to the 120v outlet - we have 2 Leafs and weekends could get dicey due to long recharge times. Installation is plug-(and-plug)-and-play if you already have a suitable outlet.

This EVSE, like all others, is simply a moderately intelligent extension cord. You can get any amperage level version of this device and it will work on your car. The car is in charge of the charge, so if you have an EVSE capable of delivering more current than your car can use, the car will protect itself just fine. I would recommend that you get the highest amperage device you can power so that you don't have to worry about this issue should you buy a newer EV with higher limits. If your car came with a J1772 charger from the manufacturer, then this EVSE will work with your car.

Yes, the fit is a bit snug. As the manufacturer suggests, you can lube it to make it easier to use. Avoid WD-40 - this is a solvent that could damage the plastic parts of the EVSE or the car. Look for a silicone based lube, or even KY Jelly (that's what it's for, right?) but use it sparingly so that it doesn't catch and collect dirt and debris. That could mess up your day.

I didn't use the included hangar because we already had a classic hose hanger for the old 120v EVSE in place. I also didn't use the wall clip because the straight-in style meant the connector and cable stuck out too far from the wall for my taste. I bought a $20 "holster" for it instead that angles more towards the wall and keeps a lower profile. I kept the tote bag, but don't expect to use it. Opportunities to plug into a NEMA 14-50 are rare around here so I don't haul the thing around with me.

The description says there is a way to hang the unit from a hook to take the weight off the plug. I found the hang tab to be a bit light-weight for the task and don't really trust it. Rather than hang it from a hook, my preference was to screw it to the wall, but this was made difficult by the position of the hang tab directly in line with the cable - it was a bit difficult to work around the cable. I would prefer sturdier tabs molded into the case at the corners so that it can be secured directly to the wall. Of course, that defeats the "portable" feature, but that wasn't a consideration for my use.

Some quirks to keep in mind:

1-The temperature display is (per the manufacturer) the temp of the EVSE control box. No idea why this is included, as it's battery temperature that is of interest. Since it's displayed only in Celsius, it's doubly meaningless in the USA market. The charger has been inactive all night with a garage temp of about 40F but the EVSE says it's at 18C (64F). Seems unlikely to me.

2-The power consumed display is cumulative. It does not reset between charges unless you unplug the EVSE from the wall outlet or install it with a switch on the circuit so you can turn it on and off. This may be exactly what you want, but with two cars using this it means I have to reset the unit each time in order to know exactly how much power went into a given car. I use this for mileage calculations. YMMV.

3- My Leaf can charge at up to 6.6kW, but the EVSE typically shows it working at 6.3kW when the battery is low and it should be charging at full capacity. Again, the car is in charge here so this isn't necessarily anything to do with the EVSE but I felt it was worth noting. It may mean something to someone else, or the battery may have been too cold to take the full 6.6kW. The garage temperature is right around 40F this time of year so the battery isn't any warmer than that, especially after sitting all day in the parking lot at work with temps in the 30's.

4-It took 3 cycles before my wife's car would take a full 100% charge from it - it shut off at 94% and then 98% before the 3rd cycle when it finally took her to 100%. She's been almost exclusively on 120v charging until now. I don't know if that might mean something, but it's probably more about the car than the EVSE again.

Basically, this unit will get the job done. If you want a basic EVSE and don't care about the bells and whistles found on others, then this is a good sub-$400 option. With a warranty, there's no reason not to buy this device.

UPDATE 11JAN20: Replaced one Leaf with a Chevy Bolt last August. This unit works just fine with the new car. The plug is still a bit tight on the Leaf, but perfectly normal on the Bolt. Still working without a hitch nearly a year after purchase.

Excellent EV Charging unit & quality product for this price range.

This was an incredible addition to my existing 16A cord that I use on both my Volt and smart car. Use it primarily for the smart on two separate 240v circuits so I can charge both vehicles at the same time. The 40 amp I use on the smart as it has a larger vehicle controller unit than the Volt although the battery capacity on each is identical at 17.6 kw. The extra 5 feet on this cord really comes in handy too. The controller's read-out is full of all the information one needs and is very easy to read. I can honestly encourage everyone with a level 2 EV/Hybrid to purchase this EV charger!

Perfect Charger for my Fiat 500e

Charger works great and charges my Fiat 500e in about 3.5 hours just as prescribed (full charge). I like how the charger reads outs on the display and how the charger feels. It feels heavy and durable. I also like I it is portable and can go with me if I decide to move homes and will work with other electric cars should I choose to get more in the future.

More power than I really needed.

The product is advertised as being able to charge with 9.6kW of power. The EV I have is limited to by its charger to 6.8kW of consumption. I bought the higher capacity version in hopes that it'll still charge at the highest rate as technology marches on. The cable appear to be of sufficient quality and doesn't get hot from the current flowing through it. The charger works flawlessly with the Leaf EV that it's used on.

The information that is displayed by the unit is very readable and easy to understand. Too bad the display is so small that it really not practical to have historical data. The lack of historical data really isn't a loss as you can get a decent energy meter for dirt cheap these days.

My only concern is the single hanger loop off the top of the main controller is doesn't seem all that robust. I'm hope it stands up to the test of time w/o breaking off.

FANTASTIC EV Charger

Minutes after I received this Mustart 40 amp EV Charger, I knew I had made the right decision. It was very well packaged exceedingly professional and a good looking model to boot. Very simple to operate and the instructions were excellent. I was able to mount it in just minutes, plug it in, and it is charging beautifully and very rapidly! Not only did I save money, I saved the headaches from the “gadget” models that were much more expensive.

Perfect Level 2 charger for home and away

Have owned my 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV for a little over a year now and I love it. Have only used it for my daily commute but would like to drive to a couple of remote sites that I support (100-150 miles each way). Since high-speed DC charging is sparse in the mid-west, I need a good level 2 charger that I can plug into at the other end. This is a perfect home charger that I can easily pack and take with me as well as use for my primary home charge station.

I was able to try it out by plugging in behind my range and the 25' cord made it to the garage where Ollie supervised the final connection.

The LCD display with power usage is a nice touch to calculate the cost of each session.
