Possible design flaw?

These ear buds solve a fundamental problem I have with the ear buds that just hang in your ears: they don't fall out. They are designed to clip to your earflap. The sound is excellent, especially for the audiobooks and podcasts I listen to with these.

So, why only three stars? I haven't figured out if there is a design flaw or if my pair are defective. The problem is that the volume will spontaneously fall to zero. The reason I suspect a design flaw is that the surface of the bud that is designed for your finger to adjust the volume also sits in contact with the skin behind my ear. I haven't had a chance to figure out if that is the reason for the spontaneous volume adjustment.

I like these very much, but I will have to investigate further to find if this is a defect or bad design.

Not what I expected

I'm not a fan.of these. They don't fit well, and are not comfortable. They charge quick, and if you push them in your ears, they sound decent. The fit though, needs work.

Very comfortable with good sound

These headphones are gorgeous in design and have an opalescent coloring to them, both on the case and the headphones, as well. The headphones sit so comfortably on my ear lobes, no pinching, rests perfectly. The sound quality is really good; there is even an app to go with these headphones to be able to control the functions even better. The quality of the headphones is top tier, very comfortable, do not look or feel cheap at all. The volume control is good; I would say the only thing is that they don't get super loud even at the highest level.

Great ear headphones

Open Rock always provides such versatile earbuds. I love the open eared designs so I can hear what's going on around me even if I am not working out or doing a physical chore. These ones I can hardly notice them on my ears. They are lightweight and provide good quality music and sound. They are easy to put on and charge. The color is beautiful, nothing off about it. I enjoy using these with one or two buds in, they are also quiet so no one can hear what you're listening to despite it being open and not inside your earhole.

Great fit and sound

This is the first pair of open ear headphones that I would actually use regularly. The design is simple but the fit is great. The clip onto my ear and feel stable. Sound quality is excellent. Volume gets pretty loud and everything sounds balanced. I took a couple phone calls and people heard me clearly and I heard them just fine too. These would be excellent for runners who need to be aware of their surroundings at all times. I highly recommend these!

Amazing Sound Quality

These earbuds deliver great sound quality if worn correctly, but achieving the right fit can be tricky. When they sit properly in the ear, the clarity and bass are excellent. However, as an adult male in my 60s with an average build and what I consider average-sized ears, I found that the band isn't long enough for the buds to fit securely in my ear canal. As a result, while the sound is decent, the bass is lacking, and the audio leaks enough for others to hear. These earbuds seem better suited for someone with a smaller build.

On the positive side, the earbuds are lightweight and incredibly comfortable—I even forgot I was wearing them at one point. Pairing them was quick and straightforward. The touch-sensitive controls, however, were a bit frustrating to use, as finding the right spot was challenging. The app is only helpful for setup instructions and doesn’t offer any device controls. Despite my fitting issues, these earbuds will be perfect for the 12-year-old who will use them—she’s going to love them!

Good but There Are Better

These OpenRock earbuds are open ear, not bone induction. That's an important distinction since a lot of people assume those are the same. These basically have a small speaker that points into your ear.

These are somewhat comfortable, but there are some bone induction that feel much better. Over time these annoy my ears a little, where they pinch to stay in place.

Quality wise these are okay. They are not great. They feel like you'd expect low end to mid range plastic to feel. The more premium brands feel much better. However, these are in the budget level for open end earbuds so it's what you'd expect.

The battery life is okay, but my Shokz are far better in this category. If battery life is a big factor for you, other brands are going to better.

These are pretty much going to fit everyone. I can't imagine a situation where these wouldn't fit, but for some people they might not feel good.

The sound is pretty good. It's certainly not as good as good, in canal, earbuds, but it's good for what it is.

There is some value here, but if you can afford it, the same tech from Shokz, or the Shokz bone induction models are better.

Comfortable and good value for the price

These open-ear headphones are super comfortable and stay in place really well, even during movement. They are easy to adjust on your ear to what is comfortable for you. The sound quality is about what you'd expect in this price range. It is clear enough for everyday listening, though the bass is a bit lacking. I like that I can still hear what's going on around me, and the sound doesn’t seem to bother people nearby.

They were easy to pair with Bluetooth, and you can control the volume through the app or directly on the headphones, which is handy. I’m still figuring out the volume control on the headphones, but that is more user error than product error. They don’t come with a charging cable, so you’ll need your own USB-C but overall, I’m happy with the purchase for casual listening and calls. For the price they are a decent set of open air headphones.

A great set of earbuds

These earbuds are great. They come with their own charging case and fit on your ear uniquely. They wrap around the back side of your ears and fit well. They feel secure and provide a great audio experience. They paired very well with our test smartphone. The battery lasted for quite awhile. The only issue we found was it taking a few attempts to switch from one paired device to another, like a laptop to a phone. We would still recommend them.

Overall I believe it is of good value for the cost. As always I will evaluate long term and update with any new information

Surprisingly comfortable and great sound

When I saw the picture for the OpenRock E earbuds, designed as a sort of clip on style, I was skeptical. Traditional earbuds would often fall out, so I changed to an over the ear earbud years ago, and quite like them.

Imagine my surprise, then, when I decided the OpenRock E earbuds are my favorites.

The style takes a little getting used to (when I changed shirts they flew out), mostly because once they’re in, you forget about them. They don’t act like partial earplugs like my other earbuds do. They sit at the opening of your ear canal, but aren’t in it. The sound quality is much better than my previous earbuds.

They’re “open air,” but when I had both in and was listening to something, I could hear others talking but I could not decipher what they were saying. That’s actually great for me, because I’m easily distractible. The OpenRock E’s rendered the outside world just to background noise.

On the flip side, when I have them in but not actively listening to anything through them, it’s as if I don’t have ear buds in at all, which is wonderful, because you don’t have to take them out.

There are several tapping functions on the back of the earbuds. I’m impressed with how customizable they are. You do need to download the app for the customization, as well as to see the battery level. My previous earbuds had a battery indicator right on the case, which is the only thing I miss.

I love how light they are. I don’t see any markings on the earbuds themselves that indicate which is right and which is left, but they only fit in the case one way, which is very helpful.

While the tapping functions take a little getting used to (the first try felt totally alien), by day 3 of using them I was pretty adept at pausing, skipping, and even triggering Siri.

Best of all, and perhaps the most surprising, is the OpenRock E earbuds stay put very well as long as you don’t physically bump them (like when I changed shirts).

VERY COMFORTABLE

I find the quality of these open ear headphones to be great. They are small, extremely lightweight, to where I cannot even feel them in/on my ears. Now the sound quality could use some improvement. I use ear buds mainly to listen to videos. While the sound is clear, and I can very easily hear every word in the videos, it sounds kinda muffled. Which is not a bad problem. It’s just that I have less $$$ ear buds that the sound is much better. These are extremely comfortable to wear. I had not a single problem connecting them to my Bluetooth. Very easy to use! You can adjust the volume by pressing on the clip area on the right to turn the volume up. Press on the left clip to turn the volume down. When someone calls, these will ring in your ears. Press the right to clip 2xs to answer. The control buttons are ones you cannot see. The instructions will tell you where to press exactly. It took me a good minute to figure this out! Lol! However keep in mind I am definitely not one who is familiar with high end very pricey ear buds, ear headphones, etc. I believe these are fairly nice quality, the battery does last for several hours. I have other pairs that were less $$ but batteries last 3xs longer. The only itching I would love to see is what percentage of charge I have on the case. These also do not come with a charging cable whatsoever! They charged very quickly. I know you can download an app. I have tried, but am experiencing some issues with the app. I’m still working on it. However to be honest? I probably won’t keep trying the app if it keeps giving me problems. I have 0 patience for that. Overall I feel like these are very nice, very easy to use, extremely comfortable ear headphones! I do really like them a lot! None of those rubber grip things to deal with like most ear buds have. That’s the part I really like also.

I wanted to update my review on these! I am now rating these a 5 star! I got these last September of 2024. I am still wearing these every single day, from the time I wake up until I go to bed! I have a solid 10 hours of wearing time all day every day! The battery life is phenomenal!! Plus I was not knowledgeable on these type of ear buds whatsoever! Now the sound quality is very good!! If you want beyond excellent? Then go pay 2/300$ for a pair! For 40$?? You cannot beat these!! They still look brand new! I rarely have any issues with these! Ocassionally one or two oth will disconnect from my phone, which 99% of the time they reconnect. Sometimes I’ll have to snap them back inside their case, close the lid, open them and pop them back into my ears! It’s no. If deal! I can listen to these but am fully aware of my surroundings. 0 and I do mean 0 noise leakage as to where others can hear the sound coming from these. They simply can’t! I give these a solid 5 stars! After over a year? They’re still going strong!! Battery life is very long! You can charge the case while wearing these buds also! BUY THEM!!! You won’t be sorry!! Now I personally would prefer the black ones over the white ones. Lol! I dearly love mine

Comfortable and Lightweight, Best for Casual Use

I've been using these OpenRock E open-ear headphones for the past few days, and they're very comfortable. Weighing just 4g each, they're almost weightless, and the shiny pearl white color is stylish to look at. The fit is secure, and I can wear them for hours without discomfort.

The sound is clear and vocals come through well, but due to the open-ear design, the bass is weak, and it's not ideal if you want to listen to deep music. When using them during calls, podcasts, or other activities, they work well. I had no issues with Bluetooth connectivity, and the battery life is good as advertised.

They're good for light everyday use, workouts, or when you want to be aware of your surroundings. Keep in mind that they don't have features like in-ear detection or dual device connectivity. If you need heavy bass for your music, these aren't the right choice, but for comfort and practical use, they get the job done.

Rare decent quality open buds

I thought for sure going in that these would be awful. I have 4 other pairs of the same style from different brands and they all sound like trash. These don't, which is amazing.

They actually have some bass, unlike those others. And the rest is actually well tuned. I mean, they actually sound decent, which has me quite confused. Obviously, this style will never match almost any other style, but they're pretty exceptional for what they are.

Fit, also, it quite good. They clamp on my ears a good bit harder than the others I have. I can shake my head and they feel stable. They're also very lightweight and it's easy to forget they're there.

The case is also nice. It feels durable enough, as do the buds themselves. I'm sure I'll lose one or both of the buds before they die on their own. And the pearl finish is very nice looking. I normally wouldn't get white, but the black wasn't available. They white color does look really good, though.

Not comparable to competition

Right off the bat, I can tell you that I'm a bit disappointed this didn't compare well to competition. 50 bucks is getting pretty high in price, and it needs to be compared to other sets in that price range - such as the Moondrop Pill and Qcy crossky c50.

First, the headphones come in a nice padded case. It has instructions, and is wrapped in protective plastic. That's it. It has no other accessories, which means it does not have a charging cable. It's the first clip on headset, even when compared to the 30 dollar ones (qcy), that has ever not come with a cable.

The case itself is slippery, and very lightweight. Finish is good, but shiny, and scratched upon arrival, although it's hard to see in pictures. Kind of like those micro scratches you get on car paint that need the light to hit it at just the right angle.

Another disappointing thing is that the case came dead, uncharged, and the headphones came dead, too. I had to try to charge the case twice, before it would charge. This might be a battery problem in mine, or maybe there's some sort of phantom drain going on, or maybe the headphones don't properly sit in the case to charge. So, you'll want to make sure they are seated properly, or fit the case, to make sure there's not a quality issue with it. I only have one pair, so I'm going to assume they are just finicky and difficult to seat.

And, on the charge, I didn't think the overall battery life was better than my others. I got about 2.5 hours.

As for the fit, they didn't fit me that great. They felt very loose, and I couldn't get the wires to adjust enough to pinch my lobes securely.

I did have issues with the moondrop pill fit, yet the QCY fit great. The openrock headphones might just be a bad fit for my ears.

But the finish in these is also slippery. So, even with the not so great fit, I felt I was constantly readjusting them.

Before I talk about sound quality, call quality, I want to mention there is an app, but I could not get it to detect the headphones even when paired to my phone. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling, unpairing, but nope. From other reviews, I gather there is a firmware update, but I couldn't get that. So, if there are any benefits to call quality (ai supposedly), or sound, I couldn't experience them.

Sound for music is average, when compared to most headsets. It's not amazing, but it's also not bad. When compared to the other sets mentioned above, sound is pretty poor. If you are going for music, say when exercising (and with the low ipx4 rating, it's not recommended for that anyway), this is not going to be my first choice for a device recommendation.

However, call quality is significantly better than that on my moondrop pill. And it's comparable to the QCY.

It's possible that a firmware update would make the quality even better, but I would not recommend the device on an update I cannot get.

I did notice some weirdness when walking in the wind, with the sound, and I think there's some quirks to the firmware. So, keep that in mind if you are making lots of calls in windy weather.

Overall, it's okay. I think it's not so great of a value for the price. It's a bit expensive, but it's call quality is definitely the highest point from what I've been able to see. Headsets can often be about compromise, and IMO, I think these went for better quality calls than audio.

Edit: as I've been listening to them, they have started a new thing, where they auto turn down the volume. Volume goes to the absolute minimum every few minutes.

professional sound quality

This is a product that strikes a great balance between affordability and excellent quality. As an outdoor enthusiast, Clip On Earbuds are the perfect choice for me. After using these earbuds for a week, here are my impressions: They're comfortable – incredibly comfortable. They're so light that I barely notice they're there. Several times I've forgotten I was wearing them and my clothes have pulled them off my ears while I was changing. Choosing the white color was a good decision; otherwise, I might not have noticed them inside my clothes!

Furthermore, the sound quality is fantastic, providing a listening experience comparable to professional-grade headphones. And the volume is easily adjustable, allowing me to find the perfect level whether I'm in a quiet or noisy environment. The integration with the app is also seamless and makes for a perfect experience.

I have a couple of small suggestions: I recommend using a slightly less smooth material for the earbuds to increase friction with the ear and make them less likely to fall out. Also, I'd suggest adding a power switch to the earbuds themselves. Sometimes I really don't want to carry the charging case, but after the earbuds automatically turn off, there's no way to turn them back on without it. That's a minor drawback.

Quality earbuds that are comfortable and offer “open sound” for safety conscious folks.

I was pleasantly surprised with the sound quality of these. They’re designed to clip on and rest in your ear to allow for open sound, meaning you can still hear things around you when using them. At low volumes with hard rock music playing, I could still hear the TV in the room. I have a neighbor with a loud truck engine that I heard as well when it started up in the parking lot below. At high volumes, however, I only heard the music in my ears. These seem to be a safe choice for joggers, bikers, walkers, etc. or anyone who needs to stay in touch with the sounds around them.

They are flexible and very comfortable once you put them on. They are secure, stay in place, and don’t put any pressure on your ear. They just kind of “rest” in a comfortable position. They should be good for movies on a long flight.

What I didn’t like is the volume adjustment. You have to press in a certain area that is challenging to find when wearing. It will take some getting used to. Right side to turn up, left side to turn down. They are marked R & L on the inner side where it reads, “Open Rock.” I had to actually take them out to make good volume adjustments. What I noticed when I did that is the other ear bud still had full sound so if you take one out for any reason, you don’t lose what you’re listening to. Also, the earbud that was out didn’t sound overly loud, so I’m assuming if you have it at higher volumes, it won’t bother someone sitting next to you.

I had no issue with connecting via Bluetooth on my iPhone, but I wasn’t able to connect to my iPad. I will need to work on that. Also, there is an app where you can control EQ and other sound levels, but for this review, I used straight out of the box. For the average music listener, they are fine as is in my opinion, and I am someone who has experience with good sound quality. But at least there are options through the app to adjust if you must.

The buds came charged, but you will need to charge using your own c-type USB as it doesn’t come with a charge cable.

All in, at this price point of $49.99 at the time of this review, these are decent ear buds.

A comfortable impressive set of ear buds

I have a large collection of headphones and ear buds because I am always looking for the "best" pair I can find. My bluetooth connected headphones which go over the ear are fairly comfortable but large and cumbersome so I primary use something with an over the ear hook because most of the others tend to fall out of my ears when being more active. I guess almost all of my earbuds go into the ear after fitting one of the various size "buds" which help you adjust the fit but if you wear any of them for extended periods your inner ear can start to feel itchy. I also like that most of the in-ear buds do block a good portion of exterior noise which can be both a positive and negative at the same time. Not being able to hear outside noise can be dangerous if you are riding your bicycle along a busy street but outside noise can also take away from your experience of trying to find peace in blocking the outside world. So, when I saw this pair of open ear buds I had to give them a try.

First, I love the size and weight of these buds because with all the things we carry around the smaller the better. I was a little worried about having to clip them around the backside of the ear but this turned out to be something that didn't bother me at all. In fact, they are so light weight and the clip puts so little pressure on the ear that it doesn't take long and you almost forget they are there. Also, when I wear the in-ear buds I always have to take at least one out to have any kind of interaction because you can't hear the other person speak. If you simply stop whatever you are listening to these OpenRock buds are easy to have a conversation without having to pull one off. Pulling off an ear bud and placing it down somewhere is the first step to losing one. The sound is absolutely clear and impressive but if you are in a noisy environment the outside noise can be distracting but in some circumstances you really need to hear what is going on around you. I love this pair of OpenRock Clip On Earbuds but I will use them in conjunction with some of my other earbuds. It's kind of like using the right tool for the job and these are a good tool to have in your toolbox.

Could Offer More

First, it's important to understand that being open ear buds, these are not going to deliver any significant amount of bass, nor, as I'd expect, do they offer noise canceling. As there's no seal in and around the ear canal, those things aren't features you'll get, and I took that into account when writing this.

The buds are very comfortable, and at least in my ears, also very secure. The touch sensors respond well, and overall, the sound is about what I would expect: just okay. These work with Open Rock's companion app, and that allows for firmware updates, a few EQ presets, a custom adjustable EQ, and toggling some or all of the touch gestures on or off. Battery life on a charge seems good, and they charge relatively quickly.

Things that could be added or improved:

Dual device connection. It's not a feature on these.

The ability to remap the touch controls (they do allow you to enable or disable touch functions, but not change them).

Increased maximum volume. Given that these need to work against ambient noise, volume is essential.

Wireless charging. Would be nice, but at this price, it's not that surprising that it's missing.

If you need a relatively inexpensive pair of open earbuds, these would be on my list, but certainly not at or near the top.

Easy to connect, pretty comfortable, sound is ok

After using these a few times and in different scenarios, I would say they are good as a backup pair of headphones or for casual listening. What I like about them is how easy they are to connect to your device, how quick and easy they are to charge, and that they work by conduction rather than sit inside the ear. I do find them a little heavy, so they sometimes slide down a little, though that doesn't affect the sound. I wish they were either coated or made of a slightly more grippy material. The sound is ok. It's a bit tinny, especially in the mid-range, and there is very little bass. For the price, though, I think they get the job done.
