Slower than molasses in winter

Taking 5 hours to copy 2.96 GB of 5 files. Definitely not living up to the 1GB per second claim.

Cheap cable, decent drive so far.

Came with a gash in the box. That gash was caused by the metal from the SSD scraping through when it was squished against something. The metal on the enclosure was marked up.

SSD performance: The cable it comes with must be super cheap. It really matters which way you plug it into the SSD and which way you plug the USB-C into your computer. Once I got the two sides set, the drive performed at the listed speed.

The unit failed right in the middle of data copy. It did not work on large data backups.

I recommended this new technology to my manager and he just bought this device. It has performed miserably. I felt so bad recommending it.

I will test before I recommend any more drives to my management.

Does not stay awake to finish long tasks.

Be aware!!!! 10min into a mass transfer the drive turns off on its own. About 85% done. Super annoyed.😑

Good performance

Good performance at a good value. The Orico portable SSD works really well as a Time Machine in Mac OS.

Great drive to expand game storage (Be sure you use a 10Gbps USB port)

My son's main PC disk was filling up so I wanted to get him a good, speedy external drive that he could use for his games. It had to be quick enough to be able to load current gen game files, likes textures, etc. in real-time and pretty quickly. This drive came through.

As you can see from the screenshot, speeds are blazing fast for an external drive, but here's the thing to keep in mind: Be sure your USB port is a USB 3.1 standard (current for 2024). And since the naming conventions have changed a gazillion times for USB, just be sure it has a 10 next to it for 10Gbps speeds. If you're using a 5Gbps port or -- gasp! -- USB 2.0 port, you will not get the full benefit of this drive.

However, if you use the drive as intended, expect a consistent, dependable drive for games, photos, movies or whatever you need to store on it.

Pretty fast external drive

I am very happy with the Orico 256GB external drive so far. I wished it had more capacity than 256GB, and if it did, it would replace my SanDisk drive, but my SanDisk external drive is 2TB and I need the space. As for the speed of this drive, I gets pretty close to the advertised speed as shown. I also really like the form factor and size of this drive, and it also came with a good USB cable that allows one to connect it to a regular USB or USB-C connector. It doesn't seem to get hot (gets warm to the touch), and the small blue LED on it is super small and not distracting, which I really like.

Not As Advertised But Gets The Job Done!!

Lets get straight to point, on paper, this portable ssd sounds like an excellent buy with speeds of up to 1000MB/s and super useful design with a hanging hole. It also comes with a USB cable making it easier for me to connect it to my smartphone, tablet and laptops etc for transfering files quickly. Its good for someone who is always on the go and needs extra storage space without spending too much money.

But here’s the catch, it does not quite live up to the hype. I was not able to get the advertised speeds no matter what I did. When testing with longer sustained loads, it tends to get warm and the speeds dropped considerably. It can be annoying for some people because you would have to wait for extended periods of time when trying to transfer large files. I also had issues with it getting detected by certain devices. I also own external ssd's from Samsung and when compared to those, this one lacks some serious performance. Overall I'm not very pleased with it. I admit that its handy and does the job but I wish it performed as advertised.

Good enough performance with expected slow down

Update: 6-26-2025

After very infrequent use (about 10 times in past 3 month since purchase), I am getting drive errors. I had to scan and correct errors in the drive last couple of times I tried to use it. Fast still when working, but now I am not confident of its longitivity. I should have gotten a name brand.

Transferred 400GB. For the first 200 GB the transfer speed was about 400 to 500 MB. This was from LG gram with 2.5TB ssd and 48Gb of ram running windows 11.

However after 200GB of transfer the rate dropped to 80 to 100MB. So, this is the indication as to how much cache it has. I was transferring mostly larger digital photo images for first 300 GB.

Also, when I tried to use USB C connector the speed was only in 50 to 60MB/s. At least for the LG gram the usb A port can provide about 500MB/s speed but not usb c.

So, overall I am pleased with the performance. However, it does get hot after 20 minutes of continued operation and expect a slowdown if you plan on transferring more than 200GB or so. Obviously, you have to choose the port wisely to get the maximum speed.

The unit went back to 500MB/s after less than minute cooling down.

Good performace product, with few minor caveats.

Solid unit, good value.

First, be aware that the quality of your usb 3 connection is going to affect the read/write speeds you get out of this unit. I found a significant difference between two different usb 3 ports on my test computer, so to get the most out of this, you're going to need a usb 3.2 port to get much in the way of speed.

Second, my experience is that the top end speed is over-rated. Granted, that was not unexpected, and I don't have the latest and greatest computer to work with, but even with that, the speed was pretty impressive. Did I get 10Gb/s speeds? No, but I did easily get over 400Mb/s (see Diskmark results in photo). Given how inexpensive this drive is, my expectations were not real high and it's more than fast enough for my needs at this time.

Other things to like about this: metal enclosure is solid protection and very sturdy; big loop at the end is a rather nice tactile feel although I'm not sure I'll hang it an any kind of a lanyard or carabiner clip; has a small but nicely visible blue LED indicator for disk operations; and usb-c connector for maximum speed and compatibility going forward. Instructions are no worse than most Chinese stuff these days, and there is a small amount of humor to be derived from referring to overheating as "fever." All in all, a good value. Recommended.
