Nurturing creativity and embracing imperfections

"Ish" by Peter H. Reynolds is a whimsical and profound exploration of creativity, perfectionism, and the beauty of embracing imperfections. 🎨 The story follows Ramon, a young artist who is disheartened when his older brother criticizes his drawings as "ish." Reynolds artfully weaves a narrative that unfolds into a journey of self-discovery and artistic liberation.

The brilliance of "Ish" lies in its ability to convey a profound message with simplicity. The concept of "ish" becomes a powerful tool for understanding that art is not confined by rigid standards but is a fluid and subjective expression. Ramon's evolving perspective, from frustration to acceptance of the "ish-ness" in his creations, is a lesson in resilience and the joy of embracing the unique and imperfect beauty of individuality.

This is a gentle reminder for both young minds and adults that creativity knows no bounds and that every stroke, even if "ish," contributes to a masterpiece. 📘✨

Concerning images

This book is full of concerning images that start on the second page. Without the text, themes of abuse appear almost on every page. What does this image the child is drawing look like to all of you?

Wonderful book with valuable lesson for kids of all ages

This is my favorite of Peter Reynolds’ Creatrilogy set, comprised of The Dot, Ish, and Sky Color. All three encourage children to explore their own creativity and never set limits on what they can do. But “Ish” really drives home another message our children need to know: Everything does not have to be perfect to be perfectly wonderful. Ramon loves to draw and does it excitedly and with no reservations until a comment by his older brother makes him question every stroke of his brush, pen or pencil. His younger sister, however, shows him not only her room, plastered with all his drawings, but that things can be flower-ish, sunset-ish and can still make someone’s world a little bit brighter. Perfect book to use with young and not so young readers to teach a valuable lesson and to demonstrate ELA skills including the genre of fable, theme, excellent word choices and more.

Note: Pair with the other two books on International Dot Day which is celebrated in schools everywhere on September 15-ish. Activities available on Reynolds’ website as well as one for International Dot Day.

Almost, kinda, and sorta ....ish

Cute book about not having to be perfect but still hitting the mark as far as art and life is concerned. I enjoyed the art teacher reading it to my class, and they enjoyed it too.
