For a beginner the introduction on how to read frets and strings seems contradictory. 1st pic shows a scale with fingers used on frets, which string is the top? The grey circles are supposed to show the tonic of the scale but #4 is a different note? Why? The second pic is worse, does the scale correspond to the neck diagram? Too much is assumed by the “teacher “

Frets and fingers.
The book is easy to understand with a lil help from a friend who plays.
I didn't fully understand the fret numbers and the numbers for the finger that goes with each fret.
So from what's been explained to me is the top numbers are the finger to be used in the fret and the bottom numbers are placed on the string to show you which fret to finger.
