Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You Hear? by Bill Martin Jr. is a lively and engaging children’s book that introduces young readers to animals and the sounds they make. The repetitive, question-and-answer pattern makes the story easy to follow and fun to read aloud, which is especially helpful for early readers and listeners.
The illustrations by Eric Carle are bright, bold, and colorful, capturing attention and helping children connect each animal with its sound. As the story moves from one animal to the next, kids can predict what is coming, which builds confidence and participation.
Overall, this book is a great choice for young children because it supports language development, listening skills, and memory. Its rhythm and repetition make it enjoyable to read again and again, making it a classic picture book for classrooms and homes alike.

The cover was backwards and upside down!

Creí que el libro era de hojas gruesas pero no, se rompen con mucha facilidad.

I got this giant board book, very different from the other board books from the dame author/illustrator pair, as you can see in the photo. It's hard to read, it's so big!

I had to add to the collection after my daughter started making me read brown bear five times a day lol. She loves it and I love not reading the same one over and over 🤣 but seriously these are great books for toddlers and babies.
My daughter has said multiple new words just from brown bear 🩷
- Blue, red, brown bear and quack quack (because sometimes we say their sounds too even though it's not in that one.)
I can't wait to see what new words she picks up from these!

This book was cute! I had never read it, but the book did arrive a little damaged in the corner not sure if they shipped it that way or not, but overall good board book.

This book is easy for young readers to decode. My three Year old can easily read this book. This book is colorful, its hardcover provides extra support and keeps the pages intact. This book supports repetition which is important for memory and comprehension in reading. I strongly recommend this book. The words are easy to understand and stimulates the curiosity and interest in young children which eliminates frustration in reading and promotes confidence and independent readers.

Love the book but one of the pages were printed upside down which made my toddler so confused lol other than that love the book. Someone at the publishing company needs to do quality control.

Now I remember why I hid it because my kids get so confused because the last 2 pages were a misprint and make absolutely no sense with the rest of “Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What do you Hear?”

My Autistic son LOVES this whole series. I bought him a set for Christmas and this particular book has the wrong ending lol! It hs the ending for baby bear baby bear. I think is funny and he doesn't seem to care! But would have liked the correct book lol.

The final two pages are misprinted from a different book entirely so the story makes no sense. See attached picture and then look at other posts to see what it is supposed to be.

The book was in such TERRIBLE condition when received. Honestly it looked old when it was suppose to be new. So DISGUSTED! I’m very disappointed. It’s a hassle for me to do a refund because I’m purchasing from overseas. Will not purchase ever again.

Story is not as lovable as the original Brown Bear. The condition of the book seemed used. Spine broken at the top, cover scratched and deep scratches that caused tears in a couple of the cardboard pages. Seemed used. Surprised I didn't see colorings or drawings on the pages.
Marcela
Really cute book, my son loves it.

I have always been a fan of Eric Carle books, and this was no exception.
We have the whole series! My son's favorite is Brown Bear but he likes a lot this too
This book, like the others, is interactive and rhythmic, you can introduce the names of the animals and the sounds they make.
Children learn easily colors, what sounds each animal makes and even counting how many characters are in the book.
The illustrations are so unique and eye catching, the colors are bright, the pages are sturdy and the story holds their attention.
The book finishes with a summary of all that the children have seen.
The hard board book is easy to hold and very durable.
A must have

Great book, but our 2004 printing is missing the hippopotamus and skips directly to the flamingo.

I have the board book format of this book. I have been reading this book to my son who has shown moderate to little interest in this particular book.
CONTENT
The rhymes in this book are quite repetitive. Each page has the sentence structure like "Polar bear, Polar bear, What do you hear" "I hear a lion roaring in my ear". The subsequent pages have name of the animal and sound changed, but overall the whole book has the same sentence structure over and over. The animals are also not common enough that my son can relate to easily e.g. boa constrictor and neither are their sounds that I could imitate.
ARTWORK
The illustrations are from Eric Carle, who is a gifted artist and also an author of children's books such as A very hungry caterpillar. However, I am not a big fan his illustrations being used in a book like this. His painting style is like of avant-garde artists reminding me of Matisse (not surprising since his work is influenced by works of Matisse and Picasso.) The artwork illustrating different animals is abstract which definitely has a place in an art gallery but maybe not in a children's book. Most of the animal's looks are quite derivative of each other, and I have personally found the abstract artwork in other children's books, such as My heart is like a zoo, much more colorful and visually appealing for my son.
OVERALL IMPRESSION
I felt there are better books out there in this genre and style. One book I could think of is "My heart is like a zoo" which has more rhyming sentences and colorful artwork.
