A natural progression, original Seagate 2TB had thoughtful stock WiFi hubs as a feature to accommodate early smartphone wireless interfaces. Seagate's newer devices transition to horizontal, this bookend device must remain vertical but lacks a proper stand. I made one out of cardboard easily enough. I bought 2.

Plug and play, 230 MB/s, zero problems
Bought the Seagate Expansion 22TB desktop drive and it has been trouble-free since day one. Plugged in the power brick and USB 3.0 cable, the drive showed up in Windows right away, and I started copying files. No reformatting needed, no extra software required, no disconnects or weird behavior.
Capacity is the point of this drive and it delivers. Transfer speed has been good — it stays right around the write speed of the HDD itself, about 230 MB/s in my use. That is exactly what I wanted for backups and large file copies. Build is simple and solid. Zero issues so far. Happy with the purchase.

Won't power on one year later warranty not honored
always hesitant to buy this brand because of past bad experiences. decided to try again and here the hard drive won't power on. It stopped working within the 12 month warranty but I was crazy busy on film sets for 12-16 hour days and it went into the 13th month before I could take the time to deal with support and not be in the middle of the night. 24 tb of company based intellectual property, valuable business assets and data trapped to be dealt with because I gave this brand a second chance.

1 out of 4 drives failed within 10 minutes
I have slowly been filling them up with backup data, one at a time. The first 3 drives have been working fine. However, yesterday I finally took the plastic-wrap off the 4th drive, and it failed within 10 minutes.
After formatting the drive just like the others, I began copying data to it. After 10 minutes, the copy froze and then the drive went offline. I have tried 3 computers and 3 cables, and the computers can recognize the drive but they can't format it to make it usable. I've tried both Mac and PC. On Windows, I get an error message that reads "The request failed due to a fatal device hardware error." When I plug the other 3 drives into the same computer with the same cable, they work fine.
This drive also makes grinding and clicking noises on startup that the other 3 drives do not make.
When I contacted Seagate about this issue, they told me the drive is past the 1-year warranty and there's nothing they can do.

Works great, but you don't get 8TB
The thing does with great and have had no issues, but I'm not a fan of how every external drive I buy is substantially lower than what is presented. I bought an 8TB drive, my computer states the capacity of the drive is a little OVER 8TB, but 7.27 is only available. That's 730 gigs of space unaccounted for. If you're going to short me almost a TB of storage space, sell it as a 7TB and let me be surprised I get a couple hundred gigs extra.

Do Not Purchase Gate Hard Drive
DO NOT PURCHASE THIS HARD DRIVE. Since I bought it, it's been the most disappointing and disastrous purchase I've ever made. I bought it to back up all my files from my shows—a project that took a lot of time, money, and effort. Since then, after three months, all I hear is the driver making strange noises, but nothing shows up on my computer. You have to understand that I have shows that need editing and delivery. My career is at stake. I haven't dropped or damaged the drive in any way. I searched YouTube for solutions, but I'm afraid to try anything that might erase my files. Then Seagate posts videos suggesting fixes, which makes me think they know the drive has issues. Hopefully, I can recover my files.

a rair bargain, thanks Seagate.
I paid $249 for 22TB's of storage, and all I had to do was shuck the hard drive and put it in to a DAS. Inside was a Barracuda drive, which I have used successfully in the past and still have a couple from many years ago. I noticed the price climbed a couple days later to $289 (still worth it), so I did pretty well. To give context on the pricing, I just purchased a bare 20TB HDD before this one for over $400. If you're planning on doing the same as I, buy a cheap bezel knife to make the process easier, and the best DAS enclosure I found was a Terramaster D4-320 (at the top of the picture). Stay away from WD hard drives and go with Seagate if you want to do this, WD has anti-shucking measures that can create issues and those drives don't last (ask me how I know). Seagate, thank you for remaining consumer friendly, I am happy to remain a dedicated customer.

Fragile Defective Sata board
Sata board broke within 6 months. Catastrophic design flaw. The Seagate Expansion Desktop uses a fragile USB-SATA board. Entire disk is linked to sata board with a fragile connector piece. When this breaks, you have to send it back to them because the entire drive becomes unreadable even though the hard drive itself still works and you replace the board. You cannot recover your own data without Seagate’s special board which holds the encryption. A single broken ribbon cable = total data loss. Avoid this product if you value your files.
They do offer data loss recovery but I couldn’t wait 45+ days for a replacement.

Read if your transferring from another hard drive
I have a 5 TB that is on its last legs. So I’m transferring al my files. I keep getting errors or the transfers will stop. But I’m sure it’s mostly my bad drive. But my brand new Seagate keeps making sounds. Like I can hear it through the dresser. But I’m guessing it normal.
So Chat GPT tells me to use crystalDiskInfo, it gives you info on your drives like the health and temperature. So I’m seeing my bad drive is obviously bad. I knew that. But my seagate is in good health but the temperature is like 56!
So GPT say it’s not getting enough airflow and I’m like Duh. They put the vents on the bottom with like a centimeter little stub legs. So I put it on its side and it didn’t really help. GPT says lift it. So that’s why you see the photo of it in on the bottles. But still hot. GPT says it needs a fan for airflow. So I remember I have neck fan.
BINGO. Temp drops imminently. So that is my drawn out way of saying what a horrible design. Now everything is normal.
So if you’re having issues with your drive you might want to see if it’s overhead. It will be ok for a while at high temperatures, but a few months and your drive will go bad.
I actually remember why I never got anything above 5 TB. Because if something goes wrong. You’re in trouble. Hence why I got a bad drive now. But my other 5 TB is still good.
Oh well. Too late now.
But now that I know how to cool my device. I’m hoping it last for a long time. It is a good deal if the device can actually cool itself.
I was wondering my my room was so hot. Even my mom was like why it’s so hot in here. I’m like I don’t know. How can this little hard drive make so much heat 🤣🤣
Anyway, I just wanted to help others if they had issues.
But it’s plug and play for PC. I wish the plug was smaller or just USB plug and start.

Good price range and healthy disk so far
So far, this hard drive is doing well. Took a bit to transfer around 5tb of info and it works in a pretty decent speed for meing a 7,500 standard hd.
No clicking sounds, app shows a good healthy disk. Let's see in a few weeks if the behavior holds.

Fast and Reliable External Hard Drive with Huge Storage Capacity
This Seagate 8TB drive has been an excellent storage solution for me. It was ready to use right out of the box with simple plug-and-play setup. The transfer speeds over USB 3.0 are quick and stable which makes moving large files easy.
The storage space is massive. I can keep all of my work files, photos, and videos in one place without worrying about running out. It runs quietly and stays cool even when I use it for hours at a time.
In all, this is a dependable and efficient hard drive that gives me peace of mind for both backup and everyday use.

Good product
Just got the product and I realize that the total capacity is not 20tb but 18.5tb ?? This is quite bit lower. Not sure why. It still a good amount of backup space. I connected it to my Synology NAS. It is shared so I can see it from any computer and be able to backup other system directly to it. Otherwise the product case looks good not sure about cooling though. it is kind of warm after just doing a 300gb of backup but I will see after a day or two.

Massive Capacity at a Great Price, but Not for Speed Demons
I'm at the point where modern games regularly exceed 100 GB, so I needed a place to store everything I wasn't actively playing. This 28TB drive became my "game library" along with backups from my NAS.
✔️ Excellent cost per terabyte
✔️ Faster than I expected for a mechanical drive
✔️ Great for game archives and media storage
✔️ Runs at reasonable temperatures
✔️ CrystalDiskMark results included in my photos
Games I'm currently playing stay on my NVMe SSD. Everything else gets moved here until I need it again. It also stores large video files and NAS backups, so it's used regularly for large transfers.
In CrystalDiskMark I consistently see around **275 MB/s read** and **268 MB/s write**, which is more than fast enough for copying large games or media. I wouldn't run modern games directly from it, but that's not what I bought it for.
Temperatures have also been reasonable. Mine typically idles around **42°C** and reaches the high 40s during long file transfers. I've included a CrystalDiskInfo screenshot so buyers can see the drive's health and operating temperatures.
Since this is primarily an archive drive, I keep it connected to a Wi-Fi smart plug that powers it off automatically at night so it isn't accumulating unnecessary runtime hours.
If you need a massive amount of storage for games, media, or backups, this has been an excellent value, and so far it's performed exactly as I hoped.
Update after 6 months: Still running perfectly. CrystalDiskInfo reports healthy status with no issues, and transfer speeds remain consistent.

Good, solid drive; good price-per-TB; initially formatted in exFAT
Good unit, so far; I bought two 24 TB units (after formatting you get about 21.8 TB of data storage space), replacing three smaller, much-older drives that died during a recent storm. I bought this size because the per-terabyte cost was the lowest I've seen in years; and I bought TWO (2) drives because one is for the data I want to keep, and the other is for backing up all that data I want to keep, because...21.8 TB of data is a lot to lose if one of those drives gets taken out by another storm. All things eventually die.
BUT! WARNING!
It comes formatted as exFAT, and that's not really identified anywhere that I saw. I only noticed by accident when I went into Drive Manager for an issue with another drive and to re-letter some of the existing drives.
So, for all you Windows users out there, you're probably going to want to reformat to NTFS BEFORE you start storing a bunch of data on it. Otherwise, you're likely going to hate yourself later, when you have to RE-copy massive amounts of data off of the drive onto a different drive (or drives), formatting it to NTFS, and re-copying the data back onto the original drive. (Still in the process of doing that.)
The drive was physically smaller than all of the previous units I've bought, even though those older drives held MUCH less data.
Installation was a snap--just plug 'em in, and they work--and the power and USB cables were generously long enough to reach my drive storage stand.
The data and the backup units both seem fine, after over three days of copying data onto them (with some breaks in between large data transfers, to allow both the sending and receiving drives to "cool down") and random testing ensured good copies were received by both drives without issue.
All in all, very happy with my purchase(s), and I'll definitely be buying more of them, eventually, as I fill these up.

28 Terabytes (25+ Tebibytes Windows)
The best size density in the world is under USD 10,000 (06/2025). I have used this product for a month, combined 10 older hard drives, and tossed them away. I have about 2 million files on the disk, including a million academic articles and 100K personal and published legal files.
This will allow my computer to fully index and access all my files, legal writings, legal, medical, philosophical, sociological, psychological, surgical, nursing, pathology, and other knowledge domains. This drive enables me to perform enterprise-level work while my income is below the poverty line. I once accidentally lost power because I unplugged it while it was writing files, but no disk errors were identified.
I position the drive stabilized, cables secured, and an air-filtered fan constantly blows on it.
This 28 Terabyte (TB) HDD [25 Tebibytes (TiB standard; listed as TB in Windows) will enable me to achieve my goals in ways that I have envisioned for the past 15 years.

For external backup of multiple server drives
We have a server with many HyperV VMs on several 4 TB drives. This external drive will hopefully simplify backing them all up to one place. We were previously using 8 TB drives and needed 3, so this should handle all of it. We use Windows Backup to make backups drive by drive while the VMs remain running. Better suggestions welcomed.
Was surprised to see all the attachments to global outlets. Don't think I'll ever need the extra ones, but nice to have that option.

Actually I believe this is an excellent hard drive, however, I got a free plastic clip dropped from the hard drive while I'm doing the open box (see picture 2 and picture3). I contacted our customer service to ask for a replacement because I do need an hard drive and I do not want to wait for month to go through the return process (Yes, this is an international order). 20tb questionable for Xbox series x use January 2025
I bought this drive to use with my Xbox series x based on the news I heard in January 2025 where you can use a storage option larger than 16tb. I drive I bought was 20tb for $230. My Xbox is updated and sees the hard drive but doesn't really know what to do with it. I will update this review once it starts working. For now I gave this hard drive 4 out 5.
It's loud
The case wasn't fully snapped shut coming out of the box.
Power brick takes up outlet space.
If you look at my photos below I have 1tb expansion card and 4tb Seagate expansion hard disk. It sees 20tb but doesn't know what to do with it. Clicking the format button and leaving the Xbox alone doesn't yield any results. Restarting the Xbox takes me to the "would you like to format this drive screen" I will try to format it on my Windows PC next time.

Second Seagate Expansion HD Failure
I bought a Seagate external HD a few years back and it failed after a couple years so I thought I just got unlucky. Just because of availability I got a second Seagate external HD last black Friday and this one failed in less than a year. From day one it was already noisy but I didn't think much of it. Now it just has problems accessing any data on the drive and makes very loud "crunching" sounds every time it's trying to retrieve data. Needless to say, I already lost a bunch of data on the drive and will try to recover whatever is left. To make matters worse, I also bought an internal Seagate HD on the same day and it is also making loud disk accessing noises since day one. It hasn't failed yet but this leads me to think there is some manufacturing problem with their hard drives. Now I know why Seagate was available and my first option(Western Digital) wasn't last year.
