Great kit, but piece came broken

I bought this for my nephew who loves to build things. Everything is great except the piece for the surf-bot came broken.

This was a complete nightmare.

I bought two of these for my twin grandsons. They are bright and strong children. This was an absolute nightmare. First there are 190 pieces that your child must clip apart with very sharp clippers (provided). It took us two hours to get four pieces together – see video clips of the boat hull. The kids LOVE legos and really TRIED to like this - but after two hours they threw their hands up in desperation. I helped them the entire two hours. The pieces don’t even fit together well. You’ve been forewarned. Get some Legos instead. I’m sending them back and hope I am reimbursed.

We might as well have thrown $40 out the car window. It would’ve been more fun. And more memorable.

Good idea, but the quality of the plastic parts is poor

It looks like a wonderful construction set for teaching a child the basics of robotics at the beginning stages. But, unfortunately, due to the defective main gear, further assembly is simply useless.

A bit too complicated for the recommended age

The concept of this solar robot kit is great, but it is way too complicated for the recommended age group. There are way too many tiny parts and pieces, making the assembly frustrating rather than fun. It definitely requires a lot of adult help and patience.

Junk!

Bought two for my grandsons( who are prettty good at this stuff) 10 years old. Neither robot worked!!!! We tried to figure it out but neither one would work. It’s ridiculous!!!!! $30 straight in the trash!!!! Deserves no stars in my opinion.

Robot kit easy assembly

Easy to build. For ages 7 or older. It works, just follow instructions.

Hard to put together

An okay toy but very hard to put together. Bought for my gifted granddaughter but after trying to put together for a while my daughter with an engineering degree had to take over. Definitely not suited for an 8 year old. Maybe 12 or 13. No remote or anything just goes straight.

Wow, super fun

Did with my 9 year old. It probably is too challenging without a teenager or adult to assist, but this is so fun and it is very inexpensive. A must buy for Lego fans who want to experiment with super basic electronics. Great quality. Instructions could be better.

Just buy Lego

I’m baffled by the positive reviews for this product. We received one as a birthday gift and even bought another ourselves, but neither of them worked. I really wish we had just gone with Lego instead. Its quality sucks. Kids couldn’t even get the parts out to begin with.

Finicky but Fun

Putting together the gears and seeing how they work is fun, but it is super finicky. After assembling the gear box we had to take the whole thing apart to push one piece a little further down to get it to work. My 12 year old can do this alone, but while the box says ages 8 and up, it is a rare 8 year old that can make these without adult assistance. We haven’t made all the Robot designs. Hopefully a different design will actually be able to move on the ground.

Cheap fun

Got some fun out of it with my boys. They loved it and we got a few of the builds to work, but after so many tear downs and rebuilds the motor or gear ratios just started binding no matter how much light we had. But it was cheap and we got what we paid for. Going to try one of the better quality kits soon. My advice is to realize it's cheap and be as careful and methodical as possible building it and you'll get a couple good, fun builds out of it.

Easy to brake/update

I got this for an 11 year olds birthday and he spent 2 hours putting it together only to find out it broke then the head fell off so I don’t recommend updating they have great customer service and had a new one sent out within a week and he was able to put it together and working with no problems

Very Disappointing

Put it all together and it barely wants to move in the DIRECT sunlight. It's like the motor is not strong enough to power it. My son got this as a Christmas gift and was super excited only yo be disappointed in the end.......

Not great quality

I mostly built it for him but followed instructions to a tee and utilized washers to fill in the gaps where the gears needed to be tighter. It works great if you hold it up in the air. However, as soon as you place it down it no longer works. Weve tried multiple builds with the same problem. The motor cant take its own weight. Sorely disappointed.

Cheap Design; Sensitive Motor

I just received this as a gift. Was excited to assemble. When it came time to position the solar panel on the head module, I realized that it cannot and does not fit with the other pieces. This problem is due to a large mound of something (glue? weatherproofing/conformal coating?) on the solar panel PCB.

*Update*

I did a return/replacement for this item. The replacement solar panel attaches and functions fine (see my review pictures for the differences between the original solar panel and the replacement panel). I was hoping that the panel would at least store some electrical charge (it appears to only function/provide power while continuously under direct sunlight) but I guess that is just the design of it.

My new issue, however, is the motor and/or design of the pieces. The motor seems to be very sensitive to any sort of pressure or stress (no matter how gentle). When the motor housing is assembled, the housing holds all of the4 gears etc together. This adds a tiny amount of pressure to the gears, which causes the motor to stop working. However, if you gently separate the housing pieces, the motor and gears seem to function just fine. Overall, either the motor is too sensitive to work while it is completely constructed OR the housing pieces etc need to be redesigned to accommodate an overly sensitive design.

Good idea, but the quality and fit of parts is poor.

I really wanted to like this toy as a STEM kit, but the parts do not fit tightly in some cases, so the robot is loose and can fall apart easily. It is hard for a smaller child to put together without help. The most frustrating part was the gear directly attached to the motor as it could not consistently engage the next gear in the gear box. The robot can't function whatsoever without this. I tried to rebuild the gear box several times, but the gear kept slipping and would not engage. I am going to use a Lego robotics kit with my son instead.

They sent me a new kit, and I tried the new gear box but the problems still remain. I am adding a star to the ratings for the company's customer care, but they need to redesign this product to make it work.

This robot is a complete junk!

The +4 stars average customer review is absolutely deceiving. I'm sure all the glowing reviews are paid for, because this solar robot toy is a complete junk! Wasted hours trying to make it work until I realized why it didn't work.

1- After assembling the mechanical box, parts are not tight but loose.

2- Solar panel is garbage. It doesn't provide enough energy to move the gears. I know that because when I connected the motor with a AAA battery, the gears actually moved but only when the box didnt have one side covered. With the solar panel, it barely made a move. Tested just mechanical box just to check the solar panel compared to a battery.

3-The motor is not strong enough to move the toy when fully assembled even when connected to a battery. It moves a little and then stops. Useless to try it with the solar panel provided.

Didn't get very far on building it

Upon opening, we noticed that the 1 of the main body parts was not attached to the sheet of parts but rather loose in the bag and a different color (blk not gray) with some scuff marks; no biggy let's keep going. After building the body of the robot and trying to connect the motor connectors to the robot head, the connectors came right off of the wires. Solar panel won't even work without these and of course this is not something I can find in a store. At least we have robot parts for well, something.

Good hands on activities for kids

My son was working on building the first robot. The instructions are clear and easy to follow. However, I have to remind you don't push too hard when assembling. The plastic pieces are not as hard as lego pieces. The part would break apart if you press too hard, so be careful. But I think there are extras. The parts that involves gear needs a little bit more time because the gears need to work probably together. The process of assembling the gears is harder than putting the Lego pieces together but it seems manageable. I think my son needs to figure out how solar panel or battery works after assembly. I am really looking forward seeing how the solar panel works when he is done with the assembly.

I hope if you order doesn’t happen to you what happened to me.

I mean I guess everything came in the box, but box was already ripped open. And seems like the box has been opened already.

a great summer project

My 9 year old asked for legos.Seriously how exciting is that compared to expensive lego kits that you build once and that's about it! The robots you are able to build range from a dog that can wag its tail to a boat that actually goes in the water. Overall I think this will be a great summer project.

Read this First

Read this distant parents!!!

These gears don't align proper.

It's about 3 hours of work with my daughter to reach this point.

This is still just prep of parts. Be advised... you Willllllll have to do this with your child. About 96% of kids will need real help. Like stop everything you're doing and actually build the engine and everything. It's not easy. It's not exactly difficult. But dont expect to say " go build your new robot" and expect a happy kid.

It's been fun building with my daughter.. so far. Im trying to get the engine functioning so she can build an actual robot.

The engine is assembled by YOU!...

With all that said and done. Hope you spend some time with your kid, and that your gears align together properly.

Have fun. Keep your cool.. 😁

Don’t waste your money on it

When I first ordered this. My son was so excited to start building it. I don’t know what happened but this was the only pieces that it came with. I seriously don’t understand how can someone forget to pack the rest of the other pieces. It’s was a little overwhelmingly at first. Then you get used to the Manuel. It only has pictures. The robot is cute but doesn’t walk and some pieces don’t fit like they should.

Hard to assemble.

Not easy at all to assemble, a lot of small parts. The head of robot always disassembled after every little move of it.

good !

The child and his father loved the little solar car so much that it took them nearly two hours to assemble a solar-powered car. The solar panels, it takes a long time to shine a light to generate a little electricity. Otherwise, the process of assembling the car was beautiful. The diagram was so detailed that the child would like to buy one more.
