This is a great little interface for your intro into home recording. I like the fact it does not require a separate power supply so if your doing a remote recording on a laptop using battery power, you can do some light recording without plugging into power.
Its very simple and easy to set up and comes with some great complimentary software and plugins.

OK, an admission right upfront. Did the Solid State Logic name and logo on this influence my selection? Heck yes it did! 😆 I spent some years sitting in front of SSL mixing consoles in the movie sound business, and I fondly remember how wonderful they were to use. The layout, the knobs, the feel - it looks like a mini SSL console. And that's awesome, in my opinion.
Now, about this interface. First off, the mic preamp section is ultra-quiet. I run an EV RE20 (more nostalgia!) which is a dynamic mic with the correspondingly low output. Because SSL's mic section has such low noise, I need no additional boost from a Cloudlifter or other in-line preamp. It handles the RE20 effortlessly. Having two channels each with selectable phantom power, line in and rolloff gives me the versatility I need. Connectivity is excellent with rear-mounted combo XLR/TRS inputs, plus front-panel line inputs as well. The headphone amplifier is awesome - drives my Neumann headphones (even more nostalgia!) with no issues. Rest assured it gets LOUD. Be careful.
Now, about those way cool "4K" buttons on each input... SSL says that turning this feature on effectively mimics the "legendary sound" of the SSL 4000 series consoles - and they are absolutely correct! A little brighter, a teeny bit of analog distortion and whatever else they've put in this feature really brings back the 4000 series sound that, whether you know it or not, is heard in a lot of 80's hit music. If you're a vinyl aficionado, this 4K feature is your new friend. 😉
Offered at the same price point as many other devices with lesser specs, more noise and fewer features, the SSL 2 MkII is a great value. Get it. You won't regret it! - J

The SSL 2 MkII exists, and that fact alone is worth celebrating. This interface isn't just another theoretical concept, it’s a physical, tangible product sitting proudly on my desk. It holds weight in the real world, equipped with actual knobs and inputs that function precisely as expected. From the moment I plugged it in, the reality of its existence hit me, and it was everything I could ask for in a product that is.
With every twist of a gain knob and every flick of the legacy 4K switch, the interface continually reaffirms its place in the world. It's not hypothetical, and it doesn't vanish when I'm not looking. The SSL 2 MkII simply exists, all day, every day, waiting to capture, output, and process audio in ways that only something real could. And for that, it earns all five stars.

The sound quality of this unit compared to my old interface is stunning. I always thought that my monitor speakers were the problem, and they are pretty low-end, but now I can hear my mixes. And the recording quality is so much better. This is the best upgrade I've ever purchased. I absolutely love this unit. Boy did I make the right choice.
