Tone is Nice, but Pitch is Iffy

This is my first Irish "tin" whistle. This ABS plastic one definitely does not have a tin sound, but rather a warm, round, wooden-sounding tone. I think the tone is rather nice, but if you're looking for a true tin whistle sound, this won't get you there.

I think this whistle should be fine for a beginner. I had little issue getting all of the notes in both octaves to sound. I grew up playing trombone, and might take breath pressure control for granted, though.

The main thing that I noticed about this whistle is that the lower octave is noticeably sharp, and the upper octave is a just a little flat. The unfortunate thing is that the lower octave is so sharp that I can only get the lower notes in tune by blowing at such a low rate that the volume/tone suffer. The very highest notes have a similar problem: I have to blow hard enough that it gets very loud and more harsh-sounding.

I understand that Irish whistles require some tuning by mouth/air pressure, but I don't think that the better ones need such drastic adjustment that the tone suffers.

I still think this is a decent option if you're just looking to start, and don't care about recording or joining other musicians. It appears to be a little pricier than the average beginner whistle, though.

A Little Too Thin, Lacks Warm and Round Tone

I’ve had plastic and ABS whistles and there’s nothing in the material that precludes an attractive tone which, for me, is round, free of harshness and can be drawn evenly and smoothly over the register.

I first check the low end because I’ve found that’s the sign of quality, or not. Unfortunately this whistle lacks that wonderful hollowness I expect from the low resister. It sounds thin and it takes quite an effort to overblow to the octave.

The walls in general feel very lightweight and, while that can be a good thing in terms of playing comfort, the overall tone throughout the register is on the weak side, compared to my metal whistle and a wooden one.

The whistle is cast as one solid piece, so there’s no mouthpiece adjustment. The workmanship is good, holes are cut cleanly and the mouthpiece is comfortable.

If, like me, it’s all about the sound, the tone you produce, then I’m afraid this whistle will disappoint all except perhaps a complete beginner yet to internalize what a fine whistle tone is.

I very happy with this for my first tin whistle

I always heard my mom talking about my grandpa playing the tin whistle so I've always had an interest. There should be a really good first tin whistle. It came extremely nicely packaged. It is plastic but it does sound pretty good. I don't want to hurt your ears and play it I'm sure there's some other people with examples it's not difficult to hit the different notes by blowing a little harder. I watched a video on how to play before and I thought that was going to be harder than it was. Definitely pretty easy instrument to start with but I can see how it could get intricate playing the different notes by different blowing strengths. It's a nice size and fits nicely in the hands and I really like the smooth soft feel of the plastic it's really well manufactured. This would be really really hard to break you need to run over it with a car or something. Make sure you keep the box as it's really a perfect carrying case. Reasonable price I would recommend if you're looking to get to the tin whistle I don't think this will be sufficient for experience players but I don't believe that's what's for.

Warm sound, sturdy build

This Irish tin whistle offers a warm and fuller tone compared to standard penny whistles. It produces loud, bright high notes and solid, warm low notes that closely resemble wooden whistles. The whistle’s D tuning makes it versatile for traditional Irish music, folk sessions, and more, appealing to both beginners and experienced players.

The whistle is crafted from high-grade ABS material, making it durable and resistant to cracking or temperature changes. This ensures a stable and reliable tone with minimal maintenance. Its simple blowing mechanism makes it easy to play, which is helpful for those just starting to learn the instrument.

One downside is that while the tone is warm, it may not fully replicate the nuanced sound of a wooden whistle for professional musicians. Additionally, the whistle’s natural wood tone is a finish rather than actual wood, which might disappoint some purists.

This whistle offers a great balance of warmth, durability, and ease of play. It’s a solid choice for anyone seeking a high-quality instrument in the key of D that can handle various musical settings.

Beautiful Irish Tin Whistle in D with Rich Natural Tone and Excellent Quality

This Irish tin whistle in the key of D is a truly beautiful instrument that exceeded expectations in both sound and build quality. From the moment it is held, it feels well-made and carefully finished, with a clean and simple design that reflects traditional craftsmanship. The appearance is elegant and classic, making it as visually pleasing as it is functional. It has a lightweight feel that makes it comfortable to hold and easy to carry anywhere.

The most impressive aspect is the natural tone it produces. The sound is clear, bright, and surprisingly rich for an instrument of this size. It responds well when played, and the notes come through smoothly with very little effort. There is a nice balance between sweetness and clarity in the tone, making it enjoyable for both beginners and more experienced players. It performs well across different ranges and offers a satisfying playing experience overall.

What really stands out is how good quality feels compared to expectations. It is easy to underestimate a simple tin whistle, but this one delivers a very pleasant surprise. The craftsmanship and sound quality make it feel like a much more premium instrument. It is a joy to play and listen to, whether practicing or just enjoying music casually. I am very happy with this Irish tin whistle and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a beautiful, affordable, and well-sounding instrument in the key of D.

Excellent Irish Tin whistle

Sondery Irish Tin Whistle Key of D Black ABS Material

Great example of an Irish Tin whistle. The ABS material keeps the cost manageable so you're not afraid to travel with it and it will likely survive a drop or three. You can get out a passable Stairway to Heaven intro if you're so inclined.

Sondery is a well known brand that makes quality gear. I find the whistle easy to play. The ABS material is durable and means a fast warm up. I like the dark wood-like appearance.

Good value overall!

Warm Sound and Surprisingly Well Tuned

I picked up this tin whistle even though it’s actually made from ABS plastic instead of tin, and honestly I really like the warmer tone it produces. It feels comfortable to play and has a nice finish to it.

One thing that impressed me is that it actually seems properly tuned in the key of D. Sometimes inexpensive whistles can sound off, but this one feels like they took the time to make sure the tuning was right before releasing it. That makes playing melodies and songs in D much more enjoyable.

The grabar-style finish also gives it a cool traditional look, and we’ve been having a lot of fun playing different tunes on it. Overall, a great whistle for beginners or anyone who wants a warmer sounding alternative to metal tin whistles.

A fine "tin" whistle

I'm never fancied myself a musician but I love music and I like messing with different instruments. I love the sound of an Irish tin whistle and this one from Sondery looked legit. And it is, despite being made of plastic it's well crafted and perfectly tuned. It took me a few minutes to find the right breath speed and several more minutes to learn to control it. I'm attempting to play one of my favorite Flogging Molly flute riffs, but I don't think my fat fingers have the dexterity for it. Nevertheless I'm going to keep practicing, it's so fun and sounds beautiful. I think the price is fair. I'd love to try an actual tin one.

Great in the first octave and half of the second.

These are great whistles through the whole first octave and half of the second octave. Once you get to the last 3 notes it gets harder to get a good note without squeaking or becoming shrill. For the price, they are amazing. Compared to other inexpensive whistles, these have been the best I've found so far. Be patient with my playing. I've only been playing a couple of months.

Best $15 I've ever spent.

I would say this is the easiest instrument to learn combined with how amazing it sounds once you learn it.

An update to a previously bad review

I cannot update the review I already left but the fact that it hadn't arrived when it said it would was my fault I had it sent to the wrong address. It was packaged very securely and It plays beautifully. The brass patina on it is so lovely. The mouth piece is comfortable and the tone is clear and bright. I am very pleased as it reminds me of the tin whistle I first learned to play on when I was young.

One of the best pair I got among ten different brands I tried.

I love its quality.

1.Clear and bright: The tone is pretty pure, without any noise or hoarseness, and each note is clearly audible. My video was my first day trying to play and I'm a very beginner and didn't have much practice with limited time.

2.Accurate in pitch: Each note can be played at the correct pitch, without being sharp or flat, especially in the high notes of the second octave.

3.Responsive: The whistle responds quickly to my breath, allowing for easy control of volume and tone for nuanced musical expression. I just need a bit more time to play with it and get used to it.

4.Wide in range: It can easily play two full octaves and maintain even and stable tone quality throughout the entire range. Actually, I could play more than two full octaves, and other cheap brands cannot do that. ( I didn't have time to demonstrate it this time, maybe a few months later, I would create another video to show it.)

Nice quality tin whistles to learn on

I ordered the Sondery Irish Tin/Penny Whistle Set in the Keys of C & D. They were very well protected in a high-quality, sturdy box which one could permanently store them in. They come with a semi-transparent overlay indicating which whistle is in the key of C and which is in the key of D. The actual whistles are not individually marked as to which key they are in, so players may want to do that themselves. No explanatory or beginner's instructional manual is included, although playing these is not complicated and there are plenty of instructional videos on-line. No cleaning rod or rag is included in this set either, which I was a bit surprised about. That means that beginning players need to somehow know (though this isn't explained) that they should clean the insides of their whistles to dry out the built-up moisture from their breath, and that they will need to know which kind of device will work for this and then find it themselves. I think this information should be included as well as a tool to clean the instrument. Most flutes include some sort of cleaning rod or cleaning device with which to maintain the instrument.

Other than that though, I think these whistles have a pretty good tone! I found that the whistle in the key of D has a consistent cross-octave range. With the C whistle, I could successfully overblow across to the next higher octave on all the notes except B. The whistles are attractive and of good metal. I think these are a very nice set both to learn with and to play with. I'd like to try Sondery's brass whistles and compare the differences.

Pretty decent pair of whistles, good value

I didn’t know what to expect when ordering these, my luck with items like this has been kind of hit and miss. I was surprised by the appearance of them when I first opened the box. Although the metal isn’t the highest quality the flutes both appear to be pretty well made. I found it much easier to get a good tone from these when compared to some other whistles I have gotten that were more expensive. The are packaged pretty well from the factory and I will probably keep the box to store them in.

While these obviously aren’t the highest quality I think they are pretty nice and a very good value overall. They would make a nice gift for a music lover, especially younger ones. I recommend them.
