Less aesthetic than AKAI, but solid functionality, performance, & cost make this a great alternative
Since I have an AKAI EWI Solo, I was really curious to try this out to see how it compares as they’re built quite similarly but this is almost half the price. While the build looks and feels somewhat less premium with a slightly noisier speaker and a plain surface that shows every fingerprint, overall I’m impressed.
The timbres are a fun, eclectic mix, but a mixed bag in respect to quality. To my surprise, some actually sound better than the AKAI such as the soprano sax, while others veer into almost MIDI file cheesiness. If you’re interested in Chinese instruments, this has a good number of them and they sound pretty authentic. There are also a bunch of goofy but fun classic 80s/90s sound effects and lots of adjustments you can make to modulate the sound.
Its mouth piece feels slightly less firm than the AKAI and controlling it is also extremely similar, though as a short person I find it easier to use — the buttons on the front are the same length as the EWI, but start higher up. The straighter build makes it easier to see which is helpful for beginners learning finger placement, too.
If you’re looking to try out an EWI but don’t want to commit to the cost of an AKAI, the Sunrise Melody MK is an incredible deal for the quality you get. Their YouTube channel (which is just Sunrise.Melody) has a bunch of demos you can check out first, too. This is really easy to get into and has tons of depth to explore, so IMO this is a solid alternative and a worthwhile second EWI if you already own an AKAI.
