Good, but Extremely Fragile

I bought this in January and used it while I was traveling. Unfortunately the screen broke after 3 months of use. I had it in the protective case. It was never dropped, always in the case while traveling. I can’t recommend it. It was $160 and broke after 3 months?? Really unfortunate. I guess it’s too late to return.

So fragile

Arrived with broken HDMI jack and won’t even turn on. So disappointed

Veiw Sonic VX1654 16” Portable Monitor

This 16” portable monitor came from ViewSonic and was priced at $150 when ordered. The VX1654 has an IPS panel with 1080p resolution and a claimed 144 hertz refresh rate. The screen has flat finish to aid with anti glare, but isn't full on matte. All required cables and a nice screen case are included.

Color quality and brightness are mid. Playing with the brightness, gamma, and contrast sliders got a better image, but it is still below the standards of modern non-portable monitors of a similar price. It looks fine as long as it's not compared side by side with a quality non-portable monitor.

I was able to use a 120 hertz refresh rate without issue, but when trying to use 144 the screen would go black and sometimes reset. Pixel response felt much better than 60 hertz monitors and playing games at 120 fps wasn't a bad experience.

Both displayport over type C and miniHDMI inputs are present and function. Depending on the cable, different decoders for image color are used. The monitor ran on a single cable using DP over type C, while the additional type C power input is required when using the HDMI to miniHDMI cable.

Speakers are present in the monitor, but the sound is terrible. It's better than nothing, but almost any additional speaker or set of headphones would be better.

Build quality is alright. The case is all plastic and the unit is very light weight. The stand works well, but can be difficult to deploy as it sits recessed into the back of the case when retracted. The design is well thought out and looks good from the back. I appreciate the 4 way nipple button for navigating the menus.

I paired this with a 4"x4”x1” mini computer and it matches the performance of the PC quite well making for a great portable labtop alternative. I can't recommend this as a primary monitor in many situations other than needing something that is highly portable. You pay a bit extra and lose a little performance when picking a portable monitor, but they fit in a backpack. For a portable monitor this is decent and better than many others I have tried. It's not perfect, but it's good.

Perfect for travel!

First impressions on this monitor are looking good! I've never had a portable monitor, so I have nothing to compare it to. However, I am confident when I say that this monitor is a solid buy. I trust ViewSonic as a brand, and I've had many monitors from them in the past - this portable monitor is no exception. It's super lightweight, and easy to travel with. In fact, it's so lightweight that you may forget that it's even with you! Along with the monitor itself, you'll get a zippered pouch, an HDMI cable, and a USB-C cable.

The zippered pouch has a softer side and a harder side to put the screen against for additional protection. It appears to be a really nice design and constructed very well. The monitor functions flawlessly with the USB-C cable alone, but if that connection method doesn't work for you, then you can use the provided HDMI cable (but keep in mind that you will also need to use the USB-C cable to provide power). There's a built-in kickstand on the back that you can adjust to whatever angle works best for you.

I did not get this monitor for gaming, so I can't speak on it's gaming performance. However, for business, it seems perfect! I can travel with both my laptop and this monitor in my backpack and use it as a second screen for additional workspace. It takes up roughly the same amount of space as a laptop, but weighs almost nothing. In meetings, I can mirror my display and face this monitor toward somebody sitting across from me, which allows them to easily see the display without breathing down my neck looking over my shoulder.

Overall, if you need a portable monitor (and even if you don't need it for gaming), I recommend trying this one!

Great for Work and Games

Really been enjoying this thing for the past couple days. Able to get 120hz when plugging it into my PS5 and I love how it works as a great second screen for spreadsheets and emails. Plasticy build quality but it doesn’t feel flimsy. I was concerned the kickstand might not be great but the tension seems pretty well dialed. Speakers aren’t amazing but I was expecting the worst so I guess I’m pleasantly surprised there.
