Baby unit has to be plugged in

This was on my list to purchase for a while; Very excited about it. I wanted to replace the camera type monitor in 8 yr old children's bedroom to give more privacy but still be able to respond if needed. I also intended to use this for ‘kids sick days’ or ‘adult surgery recovery’.

I strongly dislike the ‘Vtech cares about your BABY” each time parent unit connects. Adults do not want to use a baby monitor.. change it to ‘Vtech cares about your SAFETY” to get it more acceptable for use other than Baby.

Mostly I did not like that the Baby unit had to be plugged into an outlet. There is no battery backup. What happens during a power outage? Can’t use it in a ‘sick or recovery’ room because often outlets are used for other medical or entertainment devices. Returning.

Does exactly what it promises

Simple audio monitor that works. You hear the baby, you go get the baby. Great range, mostly easy to use, and the star projector is a nice little bonus. It’s not a smart device or camera and it doesn’t pretend to be. If you want cry detection or an app or two way talk, this isn’t that and it isn’t priced like that. For the price it does the one job you’re buying it for and it does it well.

I’ll be honest, I went back and forth between three, four, and five stars on this. But every gripe I have is really me wishing it was a different, more expensive product, and that’s not fair to what this actually is. So five it is, because it does exactly what the listing says it’ll do.

Here’s the real world use for us. We’re sleep training, so we lay him down upstairs and head down to do our night routine, get dinner going, prep his stuff for the morning. The monitor sits on the counter and if he starts crying we hear it and go up. That’s it. That’s the whole value and it delivers. I heard him cry, I went and got him. Can’t ask for more than that.

Range is actually really good. I’ve got about an acre and I can be out in the backyard and still hear it fine. Haven’t tested it past that because I’m not about to go stand in my neighbor’s yard to see where it drops, but for a normal house and yard you’re covered.

Now the stuff I’d change, with the caveat that none of it is really a knock. After living with it I do wish it had cry detection. Right now it’s a live open mic the whole time, so you hear every little noise, not just crying and you have to just leave it on all the time. I’d rather it be a closed loop that only opens up when he’s actually crying. Would make more sense to me. And the beeping. There’s a lot of beeping. If you power off the baby unit at the base, the parent unit doesn’t realize you meant to shut down, it just thinks it lost the connection and starts chirping three times over and over until you power that one off too. You have to shut off both units, one isn’t enough. It also woke me up at 4am once beeping because the parent unit battery was low. So there are things it could do better.

Every one of those is me wanting it to be a smarter, pricier device. The listing never promised cry detection or a self contained system. It promised a cheap, reliable audio monitor with good range and a night light, and that’s exactly what showed up. My wanting more isn’t the product’s fault.

One heads up that’s more of a fun warning than a complaint. It’s a one way audio street. Whoever’s holding the parent unit hears everything the baby unit picks up. So if you leave it on the counter and head upstairs to tend to the baby, and let’s say your in-laws are in town visiting and you ask your wife why they’re still there and how much longer they’re going to be in town, they’re going to be able to hear it.

And it’s not a two way intercom either. My wife can be upstairs, say something to me, and I hear it crystal clear on the parent unit, but there’s no button to talk back to her. I knew that going in and it’s fine, you’re not paying for that, just don’t expect to hold a conversation through it.

Last thing, the star projector. I included a photo so you can see it for yourself. It’s a soft amber field of stars and moons on the ceiling and it’s a fine touch. My baby likes light. It’s not super bright though, and I’ve got maybe a seven and a half foot ceiling with the unit on a three foot dresser, so it’s not like I’m working with a big dark cathedral either. On a higher dresser it’d probably read better. You can flip it on from the parent unit, which is handy if he wakes up and wants light, might buy you a few extra minutes before you have to go in. But I wouldn’t call it a soothing, put him back to sleep feature, and I wouldn’t buy this for the projector alone even though I sort of did. I’m pretty neutral on it. Fine to have, not a reason to buy.

Bottom line, cheap monitor, good range, does the job, no surprises. Know what you’re buying and you’ll be happy.

Not Linked

Will not connect to the baby unit. My partner and I read through the entire user's manual and there are no solutions or instructions on what to do if it does not connect. We had to search online. And there didn't yeild successful results either. We are returning it and never using vtech again

Good audio quality for a little speaker

This unit is awesome. Baby unit needs to remain plugged in. Plenty of cord for this. Nightlight option is good. Patent unit can be plugged in or used on battery. I got 6-7 hours on battery with the indicator showing one bar down. Volume is decent. Speaking quality is fine. We use this for my elderly dad. I can actually monitor his breathing during the night, hear coughing & it’s clear. When he speaks- clarity is very good.

Not “ like new”

I did not save the box. I needed it right away. It has scratches on it. It is anything but “ like new “ since I pitched the box. I think I must keep it. It is now not working great. I do not recommend.

Sleep Saver! Better than our video monitor!

This product has been the best baby purchase we’ve made. Baby sleeps in her nursery and this audio monitor gives us peace of mind. The parent unit has multiple sensitivity levels and it lights up and vibrates according to the noise levels detected by the baby unit. I used to attend to baby at every noise and was accidentally waking her up. This baby unit allows me to filter her noises and only attend when she’s fully awake. As a major perk, it was super easy to set up, it automatically links as soon as you plug in both devices. Definitely worth the money!

Great for my elderly mother

I recently moved my 92 yr old mother in with us after she was in the hospital for a while. We gave her the first floor bedroom and bath, and my husband and I have our bedroom and offices on the top floor. I work from home, but was afraid I wouldn't hear her if she fell or needed help during the day or night. We started with a call button, but she would set it down and forget where it was. After a long search of trying to find two way monitors, I came across these. They work great as monitors for elderly people.

I purchased two sets of these monitors, as I needed one for her bed/bath and one for the kitchen/family room. My only complaint is that I wish there were an option for two room monitors.

The quality is excellent. They are very sensitive and pick up even small sounds. I have one placed on her nightstand in the bedroom, and it even picks up the sound of her electric toothbrush in the adjacent bathroom. If she needs me, all she had to do is call out to me, and I can respond back and let her know I'll be right down.

The parent monitor has a rechargable battery and a belt clip so that you can carry it around with you. It stayed connected even when I took the trash out to the curb last night. Great range!

The room monitor has no battery and just stays plugged in. Most of the time I just keep the parent monitors plugged in at my desk. Since they are side by side, I labeled them B and K so I immediately know which room she's calling from.

Great value for these monitors!

So after 5 months it stopped working. Nothing in the manual or on line or the customer service number. Why is this doing this? And what do I do now because they won’t replace it.

absolutely perfect for disabled or elderly

my 95-year-old mom is bed-bound, and I needed a way to hear her at all times, and to contact her. this is perfect. the unit in her room is plugged in all the time and right by her bed. I carry the portable two-way unit with me all day and can hear every word and respond to her in an instant. the battery on the handheld lasts all day and I charge it all night. the sound is excellent and the range Works in my large two-story house.

Great for dad with dementia

My aging dad has memory issues and dementia, so often times when he wakes up in the morning he doesn’t know where he is.

This set has been great with the parent unit having the walkie-talkie function so I can talk to him from the other room. I can hear his responses and have a conversation with him without him having to figure out pressing the talk button.

It’s an easy way for me to calm any anxiety he may be feeling by letting him hear a familiar voice without having to rush in there. Definitely a great buy.

It works great

I bought this for my 8 month old son cause we live in A duplex so ours & our son bedroom is upstairs so we can hear him listen in & talk back to him from our living room. I used my old cell phone playing the song love song by 311 to test it out on it to hear how good the sound is. It can be A bit staticy at times but it still works & not bad for the price. I would recommend buying it.

Great Quality Monitor, Watch Charger Cable

I have been using this for over 5 years to monitor my child, who is prone to seizures, but gets an "aura" or warning before they escalate. It has literally been a life saver. The only issue I have had is with the charging cord. Over time, they are prone to fray near the plugs. Anyone who recalls the old chargeable calculators back in the day might remember this issue. If you move your receiver often, your cord will eventually fray. It's not an if, it's a when.

As you see from the pic, the fit seems nice and it "should" prevent the cord from bending near the plug. Hopefully these work.

A very reliable little device.

We have had this baby monitor for about a month and a half and it has been flawless so far. We don't worry anymore when leaving our baby alone in his room. The monitor cancels the background noise from a fan that we have in the room, it only activates when the baby cries or a louder noise occurs. Note that the baby unit needs to be connected permanently to the power to work, while the parents' unit can work on its battery without being connected but not for a long period of time.

Buy this at your own risk - wasted 40 dollars (does not work!)

I cannot remember when I gave a below 3 star rating to any product.

(1) Unfortunately it does not charge at all (we tried charging it for 16 hours);

(2) Tried to plug-it in multiple times but nothing helps to charge the product;

(3) Perhaps because it will not charge, it will not be able to pair (link) to its partner alarm.

For those customers that it works, might be great (as it's a compact product) but in our case a total waste of money, so we need to find an alternative product. For this price, one would except the product to work.

Sound Quality

Vibration Strength, Alerting the parent monitor when there’s a noise coming from baby monitor. Can hear clearly. Sound quality is great! You have the option of picking up the littlest background noise to no noise but baby’s.

This baby monitor can't be used anywhere in Europe

We bought this baby monitor for our travel to Europe, so we can listen if the baby wakes up in the next room of our hotel. However the power adapter is not suitable for 220-240V. We check in stores if we can find a replacement power adapter for both units, but we could not find any power adapter that has the same plus as these VTech monitors.

We even tried to contact VTech, but their service website is not operating in Europe.

Such a shame, it looks as a good product but definitely not up to standards. And if you plan on ever traveling with it or using replacement parts forget about it.

Would buy again.

Pretty great monitor. So far I had it for about 3 months. I'm happy i didn't go with a video monitor... Battery could be better but it is enough for any long nap (3 - 4 hrs?).

No doubt I would buy again.

Power standard 110 or 220 or both?

The only problem is this product comes with 110vac / 60 hz and not with 110/220 !!!!

You need to used with another adapter 6vdc / and at less 400ma output

Durable durable durable and the sound is great!

I've been meaning to leave my review for a while, but today after I dropped this monitor for the 100th time, I said no more! I have to let people know how durable this thing is. I purchased this monitor May 2017 so I could still monitor my cats whenever they are outside on the screened porch since I had put in a pet door, and I love this thing! The base unit has been outside on the lanai for 1 year and 4 months, and I've had no issues with it. The 'parent' unit with the clip is inside the house on me or near me wherever I am at, or even outside in front of my house far from the lanai if I'm doing yardwork (I love the clip on it!). The sound is superb and so clear, it even sometimes picks up my neighbors' conversations LOL. This monitor allows me to hear when one of my cats jumps on the screen to chase a squirrel or lizard, even if I'm on the other side of the house or out front, and I can then run out to the cat real quick to get them off the screen. Even now as I type this and the monitor is in the kitchen with me, I can hear a breeze blowing, wind chimes softly moving, and the birds outside. I can even hear if it's about to start raining because it picks up even just little sprinkles. This thing has truly been a godsend so I can have peace of mind knowing my cats are safe while they are enjoying the fresh air outside (only during the day supervised, they are never out there at night or when I'm not home), and I can still move around the house and not have to keep my eye on them 100% the time. The most impressive thing about this monitor is its DURABILITY. This thing is always on me using the clip or placed near me wherever I am at in the house or out front doing chores, and because I'm always moving around, this monitor has been dropped on the hardwood floor, tile and concrete driveway outside too many times that I can't even count (see all of the scratches, nicks and marks on the included picture). And it still works just as great as the first day! I would totally recommend this product.

Try something else.

This would be a great baby monitor if it worked like it’s suppose to for longer than 7 months.

Now it doesn’t want to stay charged even after being on the charger all night. It cuts off while being on the charger too. Heard my daughter screaming from the other room at 3 am and not from the baby monitor. Not a happy customer. Now I will try another brand of baby monitor.

Be there when not there

I bought this product to monitor my newborn in another room when he is sleeping. I use it in conjunction with a baby monitor and it gives me the piece of mind that I can check on my baby at any time. The replacement has worked flawlessly.

I live in a 3000sq foot house and it seems to connect pretty well throughout the house. It will give you a warning "beep" if it loses connection at any time. Simply have one monitor close to the baby and keep the other one next to you. It is as simple as that. As long as it shows "linked" it will transmit any sounds your baby makes. It also has a noise cancellation so that it doesn't transmit the while noise machine that I have running in the background. You can change the sensitivity levels from a range of 1-5. This keeps you from being alarmed at every pin drop but allows you to hear the important cries of the baby. If you feel the need to speak to your baby, you can simply click on the side the talk. It also has a night light feature that lights the handle. Unfortunately, I have not seen a need for this. If I wanted a night light, I would buy a night light. Volume is controlled from 1-5 and also has a light feature to show level of sounds even if you have the volume turned all the way down. The battery seems to least 12 hours of normal usage.

Some have mentioned that they would like to use this as a intercom. I think it would be much easier just to have a two way radio than this for an intercom device. So until your baby can yell out his window to tell you his diaper is wet or he is hungry, I recommend this product for the use as a baby audio monitor.

Great value; Fancier than I need

We moved into a two story home and realized we needed something to help us hear the baby when downstairs. Its exactly what I needed, and has some cool features I'm impressed by but have no use for. But if I had a use for them I'd be thrilled! One such feature allows you to talk through the parent monitor to baby. My husband and I have used this to talk to each other when we are on different levels of the house. That's been kind of fun- a throwback to my childhood. And it is sweet to hear him talk and sing to the baby through the monitor when it is his turn to change him. I am worried about baby monitors being hacked, because of Facebook rumors, so having it turned on all the time worries me a little, but I have not found any evidence that I should actually be worried with this monitor.

Now that I've had the monitor for a month or so I can attest to its usefulness in new ways. My favorite feature is the night light. Whoever designed it had some real good feedback regarding waking babies at night. My infant often needs to be fed or changed when it is so dark I can't see myself in his room. The night light slowly grows to a soft orange which allows me to see without disturbing baby. The last thing you want is to flash a bright light on baby when you both want to get back to sleep at 2 am. And then the light slowly fades without your having to deal with buttons. Hands free! How helpful!

Works as expected

My only complaint is battery life; it even drains fast when turned off. I also don't like how it powers on when plugged in. I'm sure the thinking was that the user would want to be immediately reconnected when power is restored, but as I usually plug it in just to charge it, that mean an added step I have to take.

I've been very happy with the monitor

I've been very happy with the monitor. I've had it everywhere in our house and it gets good reception. I usually leave the monitor plugged in but have left it for about 5 hours without the battery dying.

Hate it.

Hate this monitor. I got this to put in my toddlers room so I could hear if she cried out for us during the night but it's been awful from day 1. You put the smaller unit in the childs room and the main unit goes in your room then they have to "link" to each other. Well no matter where I place the units they beep on and off in my room all night telling me that they are unlinked. I then reset just for it beep again a few hours later and wake me up. This doesn't happen every night but most nights. Mine is now 2 years old (I would've thrown it away a long time ago and bought a new one if my husband would've let me spend money on another) but now the text is starting to disappear. I can't even read some of the options anymore. See pictures. Would not recommend this monitor at all. The only nice thing I can say about it is that you don't hear any noise from it unless your child is speaking.

Awful. Broken within months.

We have a Sony baby call for my almost 3 year old, and I'm about to purchase another one to replace the newer vtech digital, which has given up before my youngest even turns 1. I'm not even sure when the talk back feature pooped out, but it did, the screen gradually started going blank, and is now completely unreadable. (See "customer photo"). I'm calling vtech today to see what kind of warranty they have, because this is completely unacceptable. But some of our other vtech toys have pooped out within a year also, and we were unable to get them replaced, so I'm sure they only run a short warranty on this piece of crap too. There have also been times where it didn't pick up the baby crying. I'm going back to good old analog monitors. They're much more reliable, apparently. Or maybe a different digital brand...vtech has lost my business.

Sounds great, but LCD screen is disappearing

This monitor sounds great, no horrible static like the last one, , we used with our son. We live in a 3-story townhouse. The baby end unit is on the second floor and I take the parent unit everywhere in the house and in the yard with no problems.

The talk back feature is great when I'm communicating with my husband or singing to the baby while I'm making a bottle downstairs.

We keep it plugged in overnight and sporadically during the day and haven't had too many issues with it needing to be recharged.

I would have given this a 5-star rating but the screen no longer works. We've been using it for 5 1/2 months now and it probably started to disappear 6 weeks ago. This renders the menu button unusable. I included a picture of whats left.

But even with the malfunctioning screen I would recommend the monitor for how clear it sounds. If there ever is a next time, I think I'll buy the set with 2 parent units.
