So this is one of those items where I absolutely had no idea whether I was going to feel like I wasted my money or whether I was going to be surprised. With my luck, I felt like I had an 80% chance of being disappointed and a 20% chance of being satisfied. And here I am, completely satisfied.
Let me give you all a heads-up on just how amazing the Pip-Boy 3000 is. First, if you're familiar with old computers like the Commodore 64, the Pip-Boy is based on the Commodore 64, and this thing genuinely feels and reacts like an old computer. You essentially have a mini computer on your arm. And when I say mini computer, I mean just that. You would be surprised by how much you can actually do with this device.
This device can be updated through The Wand Company's main website, and one of the coolest things the company does is allow sideloading. That means you have a community making unofficial mods for the Pip-Boy 3000 and other Pip-Boys that have been released, and those mods work side by side with the official software. And guess what? The mod store actually has new and updated mods and games, and it improves the functionality of this device completely.
If you look at YouTube videos released even a month ago and compare what they showed to what's available in the current mod store, you'll see that it has already been updated significantly. There is so much more available now. And by the time you're reading this, I can almost guarantee there are going to be even more apps released for this device. In terms of functionality, the possibilities feel almost limitless.
Now, whether you're looking to cosplay or even just use this as a device, there are a lot of cool things you can do with it. For those who don't know, here in the United States you can download public-domain movies, such as Night of the Living Dead, and the mod tools allow you to convert music and video files so they'll work on your Pip-Boy 3000. The sound quality is outstanding. I love it.
The value for your money is really going to depend on whether you actually use this thing. This is one of those devices where we're seeing people tinker around with it because of what it can do and because of all the possibilities. I really like the community that is springing up around the Pip-Boy devices.
Now, the size is where I have an issue. If you're an adult, have muscular arms, or simply have larger arms, you're probably going to have some trouble with this device. It does come with an extender, which is great, but even with that, the device tends to move around a little bit. If I were to give The Wand Company one recommendation, perhaps they could release something that helps secure it to your arm and keeps it from moving around so much. I don't know exactly how they would accomplish that, but it would be a welcome improvement.
In terms of comfort, though, it is comfortable. The padding on the inside makes it feel great.
I also want to touch on the functionality again because they advertise an FM radio. Just to give you a heads-up, the radio reception is weak, even if you have the wire connected. Keep in mind that you're probably going to want to keep that wire in all the time. One nice thing is that, even though I've complained that my arm is a little too big for the device, you can easily tuck the wire alongside your arm without really feeling it, and it will help with picking up radio signals.
Personally, I think you're better off using this device for music and videos, but if you want to use it as an FM radio, you definitely can.
As for the appearance, it looks really nice. It doesn't look cheap. It actually looks like a functional piece of equipment. When you mod it, you do have to take out the cushions, and I was worried that doing that might damage or ruin the product. Guess what? It didn't. If anything, it showed me just how well they put this device together.
Just know that getting the memory card out can be very difficult, so I would recommend getting yourself a pair of tweezers.
Other than that, if you're a Fallout fan, this is a must-have. Even if you don't plan on wearing it, it comes with a stand where you can leave it plugged in and use it as a clock and alarm. It just works. The value for money is going to depend on your use of the device and if you are fan of the series but even if you never played Fallout this device holds a lot of promise.
I'm going to give this a 4 out of 5, and the reason it's a 4 instead of a 5 is because of the fit. The fit can definitely be a problem, especially if you're walking around while wearing it. And guess what? Even if you're walking around and it shifts into an uncomfortable position, believe it or not, it still isn't that bad. But could it be better?
Absolutely.
I also like the fact that The Wand Company is consistently improving its Pip-Boy line. I'm really interested in seeing what the future holds for these devices after this. It's a pretty amazing piece of hardware, and I highly recommend it.

I absolutely love my pip-boy. I played fallout 3 for the first time back in 2015. It introduced me to a lot of beautiful oldies. Through many years of modding, days playing, and lost game saves..this ended up being an amazing purchase.
It has now become my personal project to have it be a time capsule/family heirloom.
