Seems to work well, data transferred quickly. I was worried it was broken when I got it because the box was damaged. It looked like something heavy was put on it. While it doesn't seem damaged, such reckless packing could have broken something expensive that I could barely afford

I guess it’s OK and for the price but you have to spend like 20-30 min figuring out how to install required software just to start using this. I’d rather just have a plug n play SSD but this card is fine in a pinch, I guess. I wouldn’t buy another.

I’ve had mine since ‘21 or ‘22. Used for a PS4 and then converted to PS5. Still holds strong. Great investment. I’m going to buy others for gaming and other reasons as well. Sleek look. Very capable of backing up any thing you need. I’ve had this thing in my different situations so I’m sure it’s great at resisting heat. Great security. And it’s a great fit. It’s not overly big.

Over the years, I have purchased my external drives from Seagate and WD, mostly WD. On December 31st, I ordered the 6TB to back up all my financial information and photos. It arrived on January 3rd.
Upon inspecting it, I realized that it does not work. The sticker seal had been restuck to the box, and you could see the fingerprints, dust, and dirt that came from removing the sticker.
In addition, once I opened the manufacturer's box, I noticed the bottom right had been cracked. I still held hope and plugged it in. It is supposed to be plug-and-play. It did not work. I tried a different port on my fairly new PC, and it still did not work.
I immediately applied for a return, selecting "replace with same exact item". That was yesterday, 1/18/26. I received the replacement the next day, today, 1/19/26.
In addition, the plastic casing was cracked in the same place as the last one. I did plug it in, and surprisingly, it did work. However, I am skeptical about how long it will last. I did purchase a warranty, and I pray that if anything happens to it, the warranty will cover it.
I will say that after this experience, I will no longer purchase WD products. I'll stick with Seagate or look for another manufacturer. One time is an accident, but twice, one right after the other, and the same exact issue, is not. They've lost my business.
The first set of photos is the 1st drive, and the second set is the most recent drive.

The WD 2TB Elements Portable External Hard Drive has been exactly what I needed for reliable, high-capacity storage! This drive delivers outstanding performance and convenience for backing up files, expanding storage, and transferring data.
The 2TB capacity is perfect for storing massive amounts of photos, videos, documents, and backup files. Having this much portable storage has eliminated my constant worry about running out of space on my laptop.
The USB 3.2 Gen 1/USB 3.0 connectivity provides excellent transfer speeds that make backing up large files quick and efficient. No more waiting hours for file transfers - this drive moves data fast enough for practical daily use.
The portable design is ideal - compact enough to slip into a laptop bag but substantial enough to feel durable and reliable. The sleek black finish looks professional and the size is perfect for travel or desktop use.
What sets WD apart is their proven reliability. This drive has performed flawlessly for months of regular use without any errors, corruption, or performance degradation. Western Digital's reputation for quality storage is well-deserved.
The plug-and-play functionality works perfectly with Windows systems - no software installation or complicated setup required. Simply connect and start using immediately for seamless storage expansion.
This external drive has provided peace of mind for data backup and practical storage expansion. Outstanding reliability, capacity, and performance at an excellent value. Highly recommend for anyone needing dependable external storage!

Since some months I've been undecided about a good storage solution for my large files, and after comparing products, I've finally chosen this one among many features because of the brand and so far, so good. Plug & play was really fast and so it was the R/W speeds while transferring files. Around 385 GB of videos were moved from my internal SSD to this one within an hour. As for the external shield, the plastic is nice at the touch and seems to be strong at hand. The price of the product justifies the quality that WD has used to provide along the years.

I received the WD Elements Portable hard drive. It is intended to back up my MacBook Air laptop. My first reaction is — WHO is still using a USB cord to connect peripherals in 2025?!?
The laptop uses a USB-C connection. You can’t use a splitter or connecting cable for the portable device, because the drive appears as read-only.
Sooooo (sigh) I have to order the transfer cable for USB-C. According to the serial number on my product, it was generated in 2024 — so there is NO REASON the device shouldn’t come with the correct cable.
Not bad price though. Once the cable arrives, let’s hope the device has the speed and storage space as promoted.
Get with the program, WD Elements.

Just perfect! And the delivery was really fast.

The WD 6TB drive itself works well—quiet and reliable so far. However, the packaging arrived visibly crushed and deformed, which was pretty concerning for a hard drive. Hopefully the product wasn’t damaged, but it definitely didn’t feel like it was handled with care.

I don't know about the internals, but by look, feel, and finish, the WD Elements is of inferior quality in comparison to my old backup drive; it just feels cheap to me, but that's subjective. My 12 yr old Seagate Backup Plus is more refined, higher quality feel, and still runs fine.
This drive is far slower than advertised "SuperSpeed USB-A cable for transfers up to 5Gbps"; it actually gets around 110/90 MB/s read/write on my 10 Gbps USB port which is on par with other external HDD's, but I was expecting more based on description.
If quality is important to you, keep shopping. If you just want something that gets the job done at ~100 MB/s, this drive should be OK.

This device is taking forever to install, I have changed devices because I thought it needed space but it's still taking more than 3hours and still in installation process. Any ideas on what to do or I would have to return it. Thanks

This drive has served me well for the past year and a half as storage for my steam library (video games). It’s easy to use and has seemingly endless capacity, but portable it is not. I took it with me on vacation. The next I tried to access it would not show up in the files of any device I plugged it into. Attempted to download a game onto it to find that what was previously 1 terabyte of free space had turned into 0 bytes.
I believe that the hardware was damaged in transport and the drive is now unusable. If you plan to travel alot with this drive, I would not recommend. It it’s to be a static extension of your pc, highly recommended.

Great value for the money, as good speed as this technology can deliver. Reliable: I have been a user of WD units since college (2000) and on all these years not a single HDD has failed on me causing information loss. Just one of them was acting up and I ran the free software for diagnostics that WD includes and shown predicted failure so I replaced before failure. This is a brand on which I can trust. Recommended.

Bought this WDW Elements this week for my 2012 iMac and to use with Time Machine. I literally plugged it in to my iMac, went to the Disk Utility application, selected this external hard drive, selected erase and then it prompts you to rename this external hard drive and then I reformatted it as journaled. It took about 1 minute to reformat. After that I selected to use as my time machine back up and then it all started backing up my iMac--which took about 4 hours (maybe less) to complete. Pretty simple and I like it's size and how the little tabs underneath help it from slipping on my desk.
Now I sit, wait and hope I get many years with this product.

In short I was out of storage on my gaining pc. 2tb filled up faster than I thought so I wanted to add an expansion drive. Reviews on the drives are very hit-and-miss and they've been searching the internet there's no concise reviews on which one to buy or if you can even use an external hard drive with an Oculus Rift. This particular hard drive get such good reviews I figured give it a try and worst case I would just use it for work purposes. Related to say it plugged right in and absolutely zero connectivity issues. I was able to transfer a ton of my Oculus games over that I don't use a lot and I started with very easy low Graphics one's not being sure if running them off of this drive would allow them to work in a virtual reality environment after testing a few of them and then working flawlessly I transferred games like zero caliber and Robo recall over and they are working flawlessly. I highly recommend this to anybody out of storage under gaming PC running an Oculus Rift

This is the 3rd WD Elements drive I have gotten (over 3+ years) to use mostly as a back-up and I plan on getting more in the future! I really like this drive and have almost no issues with any of the ones I've had. The only issue I have had before was after dropping one from about 5ft onto asphalt which destroyed the parts inside, but that one was on me. It is by no means a fast drive external hard drive, but works great as extra storage. I do even edit photos and videos from it, but would definitely recommend a SSD drive to work with large files from. Overall, a great drive that I would recommend!

Bought it back in February 2020 and it is failing in October 2020.
It starts working well but after a few minutes the feared clicking gets ahold of it and I can no longer see it in the directory. This drive is very poor quality!

Small and easily portable device. The biggest pro is the tech support. On their website I was able to find very detailed instructions with screenshots showing me how to reformat the drive for my operating system. However I took off one star because the packaging and instructions don’t mention the need to reformat or have a website readily listed, so as a non tech savvy person it took me some time to find out why the drive wouldn’t work and figure out where to do to fix it.

This thing worked just like I would expect any external hard drive to right out of the package. Everything seemed to work ok and I was able to setup a backup routine for my Windows 10 computer. The first backup worked just fine but after about a month (1 backup per week), I started to notice a beep emanating from the hard drive. I've never dropped the hard drive and it has simply sat on top of my desktop (which has plenty of ventilation so I'm not concerned about overheating). The hard drive no longer backs up properly and everything I've read online points to the beeping being the result of a spindle motor not being about to turn due to heads being stuck on platters.

I use mine on my PlayStation 4 Pro. Even though the Pro has a lot more space that the base PS4, I still found myself forced to delete games from my system anytime I got a new game or even new DLC for an old one -- A real drag to have to do that, frankly. This Hard Drive lets me keep every darned game I own loaded up and ready to play. THINGS TO THINK ABOUT: Prior to unplugging from your PS4 be sure to eject it ( you'll see the option in "Devices" from the quick menu), otherwise it'll have to repair damages next use. Also, It does require use of a USB port, so you might also want to nab a usb port hub thing to multiply available slots, especially when it comes to wireless headphones and recharging various controllers (or be prepared to properly eject it each time, which is what I do).
