Recently I purchased two WD 18TB Pro NAS harddrives, each with capacity of 18 Tb. They were purchased to install existing WD 6TB ones. After I installed both of them, one of them would not initiate and generate error (model WD181KFGX-3PCKWN0 aka WD181KFGX-68CKWN0 ). NAS is Synology, with the latest software installed (DSM 7.0.1-42218, Model DS-920+). I swapped the two hard drivers and the faulty one still generates the same error. Both hardrives have the same Firmware version 83.00A83

I have purchased these drives before and did not have an issue registering for a warranty. I purchased one more to have a spare drive on hand and received a drive in retail packaging.

I ordered 2 WD Red Pro 8TB (WD8005FFBX) drives on sale for $199 each (regular price around $230). One drive arrived with an 8TB WD Red Pro label, but when I installed it, the BIOS/Linux identified it as WDC WD60EFRX-68L0BN1 which is completely different model than what I paid for. On top of that, it failed S.M.A.R.T. immediately (“overall-health FAILED / drive failure expected”), which is unacceptable for anything sold as new.
Also, this reflects very bad Western Digital QA, a new drive should not show up as a different model from what it says on its label, and fail SMART out of the box.
If you buy, verify the model and SMART health immediately and don’t assume the label is telling the truth.

Send me a used drive that is scratched up
Bought 2 drives, one is perfect, one is scratch up and looked used.

Bought a supposedly new drive. It arrived sealed but when you opened the box, the anti static bag the drive was in was already cut open and obviously not new. Took the hard drive out and you feel that magnetic feel bad drives have. I loaded it up and it was a used drive that crystaldisk cautioned me from using. Terrible stuff, paid for new and got junk. Now my money is sitting in limbo while it gets returned.

The product I received was not a new, factory-sealed item. The clear, outer tape seal on the box was cut, and the internal anti-static bag containing the HDD had been ripped open. The most critical issue is that the hard drive's actual serial number does not match the one listed on the box. This strongly indicates the item was previously returned and the original drive was potentially swapped with a used one. I immediately returned the product and did not attempt to install a drive with a questionable history.

I received the drive the very next day which was great, but upon opening the box I found the electrostatic package was cut open already. I paid 200+ for an open drive. Then it made sense after inserting it into my UDM SE. It was a previously returned faulty drive. Of course it didn't work! Either way it shouldn't have happened. These drives aren't cheap! I've been using WD drives for almost twenty years. They have been REALLY solid drives. I'm returning it, fingers crossed it was a simple mistake.

Long story short. I ordered expensive brand new 18tb hard drive. It arrived and would not populate and on three separate connections would not get recognized. So I returned it and ordered a used one. It arrived thrashed and I kid you not it had a paper towel inside the box to keep it from rattling around. The enclosed phot shows thrashed box (which I finished opening )and I layed out the plastic and paper towel that was inside. Looks like a chewed on it lol. The hard drive then shows bad sectors on s.m.a.r.t. Doctor. Maybe I should be thankful it was even detected by system. I give up. I think the box and paper towel was clue enough. lol

I thought I would bite the bullet and get a 26TB for my home server. Got it yesterday and it wasn't recognizing in my linux box. I went into BIOS and found that it wasn't a 26TB HDD. It is being registered as a 12 TB drive with a completely different SN and Model number. I looked up the Model and serial #, they belong to a WD HGST Ultrastar HC520 HUH721212ALE601 12TB 7200RPM 256MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Helium Datacenter Hard Drive (Certified Refurbished) drive. The printed paper sticker kind of tipped me off something was not right about it. Going to return it and just get a 14TB instead.

Can't wait to use it

NO issues ever with WD Red Pro HD's, many 8TB's that I am now replacing with 18TB+. depending on price ($300 is my sweet spot).

I know this is a shocking revelation, but maybe, just maybe more thought should have gone into this. Returning because yes, when the pack ^ aging is this poor, it leads to higher failure rates. None of the major competitors are this dense when shipping highly shock sensitive electronics

tried 2 times. disk failed during disk checking
An Amazing Customer
Got it on sale for $250 it's a decent drive but it's definitely the loudest mechanical HDD I've ever owned.

One was DOA. The other drives are being thoroughly tested and thus far appear to be working. Be wary of drives shipped outside of the box with plastic or foam supports. So far, the Red Pro 18TB drives do appear to be very quiet.

I recently added the Western Digital 14TB WD Red Pro NAS Internal Hard Drive to my home NAS system, and it has proven to be a stellar addition to my storage setup. The drive lives up to the "Pro" in its name, providing reliable performance and ample storage capacity for my needs.
First and foremost, the drive itself operates quietly, a feature that is appreciated in any home setup. While the housing I chose for the drive could use a bit of improvement, the internal workings of the WD Red Pro drive are where it truly shines. It seamlessly integrates into my NAS system, delivering consistent and efficient performance.
Setting up a home NAS system with these drives was a breeze, even for someone with basic knowledge of storage systems. The user-friendly nature of the WD Red Pro series makes it accessible for those looking to establish emergency backups for crucial family information or simply expand their storage capabilities.
Having opted for a total of 4 drives for my NAS, the storage capacity has proven more than sufficient for my data needs. The reliability and consistency of WD drives have been a constant in all my systems over the years, and the WD Red Pro series is no exception. It's a trusted brand that excels in the field of storage solutions.
In conclusion, the Western Digital 14TB WD Red Pro NAS Internal Hard Drive is an excellent choice for anyone seeking a high-capacity, reliable storage solution. With the ease of setup and the brand's proven track record for quality products, it's a solid investment for both enthusiasts and those looking to secure their family's crucial information. I highly recommend WD Red Pro drives for anyone in need of professional-grade storage performance.

The product was already opened, and when I installed it, the hard drive volume was already set up. I'm really disappointed

Bought the 18 TB variant, definitely not the best packaging for a $400 hard drive. The drive works but I hate the occasional loud clicking noise from head parking or some advanced power management (APM) feature that I couldn’t disable. APM resets minutes later after I disable it. I tried several disk management softwares with no luck. It must be the firmware. Why put APM on a NAS drive that is meant to run 24/7??

I purchased a pair of these on Black Friday 2021 well in advance of when I would actually need to use them. They sat on my shelf unopened in their original boxes for over 3 months. When I went to install and use them, one drive was OK. (I have a pair of media servers with 24 large drives in them) The other drive was riddled with errors, would not format and made any machine it was connected to unstable. This is a BRAND NEW DRIVE WITH ZERO HOURS ON IT!!! Because of my own stupidity I did not test them when I got them. Now for that mistake I can only get my new drive replaced with a used refurbished drive. It gets worse. I have had TREMENDOUS trouble getting into my Western Digital account and receiving information from Western Digital. I guess Western Digital is an Indian or Pakistan company. I cannot understand these people. I have spent days and days and more days on the phone just trying to get an RMA. I sent the drive to California where it was received and has sat for 4 weeks. Western Digital does not even show they received my drive yet and that they are still waiting for it. I called them on the phone and they looked it up and promised to update things. Nothing has happened in a further 2 weeks. It is my conclusion that Western Digital warranties are worthless. I wasted $400 on one of drives and the alternative drive company is even worst than this.
Update: Nov 9 2025
I just received 2 more 26TB drives November 9, 2025. They look used!!! They did not even have boxes, just bare drives thrown in a shipping box with ZERO packing materials. NONE!!!! Of course they were D.O.A. 🤬 These were thrown in the box like junk to travel 2500 miles from Washington State to N.C. Just bare drives with a printed white label saying "NEW". Are you kidding me? I don't think I have ever been this angry to get Eleven hundred dollars of used Dead drives. I fault both equally.
Update to the UPDATE: Nov 12 2025
I just received 2 replacements to the 2 bare drives above with no packing materials. The second set also from Seatac, WA (also no packing materials) arrived with one drive alive and the other dying. The first is still formatting after 15 hours (long format). The second drive took over a minute to come online, vibrates like crazy and is clicking and internally seeking and calibrating a lot. I am trying to do a format but it won't be done for at least 24 hours. The 2nd drive is going back for sure. All these 26TB drives are OEM bare drives in just a static bag, no box or packing AT ALL!!! I am shocked these work at all banging around for 2500 miles to NC. I ordered 3 more Gold Enterprise drives from somewhere else. I am done.

Ordered four of the 18tb drives. Two arrived in opened retaped Newegg boxes with the drives loosely in the boxes and two arrived in what appears to be from WD. See pic…. Hope the two from Newegg don’t have problems in the future from be banged around…. I know there was just an issue with Newegg reselling returned/defective merchandise. These look as if they qualify……
