Candid Review: Wyze Home Security Cameras and Unaddressed Risks from a Paid Wyze Subscriber
Upon my initial investment in Wyze home security cameras, I was enticed by the same promises that attract countless smart home purchasers: convenience, extensive features, and competitive subscription pricing. For a considerable period, it appeared to be an exceptional value for safeguarding my household.
However, after expanding my setup to ten active cameras and maintaining a monthly subscription, my viewpoint has dramatically changed. What began as an economical security solution has evolved into a daily source of frustration and, more critically, a real concern regarding my home’s safety and privacy.
The Daily Struggle: Operational Failures Across Ten Devices
The primary responsibility of a home security system is to function reliably when not under direct observation. Regrettably, my collection of ten Wyze cameras consistently falls short of basic operational standards. Despite having a paid subscription, I frequently encounter a series of recurring issues:
Inaccessible Event Recordings: Accessing crucial motion events often leads to playback errors, repeated failures, or missing clips entirely.
Delayed or Missing Notifications: Alerts frequently fail to appear during events, rendering real-time security notifications nearly ineffective.
Phantom Settings Changes: Camera configurations, detection zones, and recording options unexpectedly reset or revert without any user intervention.
I have diligently followed all suggested troubleshooting protocols: resetting passwords, completely reinstalling the mobile app, verifying network bandwidth, and confirming firmware updates through Wyze's official download pages. Given that these identical issues occur simultaneously across all ten devices, the underlying cause appears to be systemic software and cloud infrastructure deficiencies rather than isolated user error.
When Support Denies Responsibility
In instances where a security setup fails due to hardware or backend issues, customers rely on vendor support for resolution. After exhausting all standard remedies, I contacted Wyze customer support to request replacements for the malfunctioning hardware.
My request for replacement units was declined.
Experiencing consistent failures while paying a recurring subscription and subsequently receiving inadequate support is profoundly disappointing. This situation highlights a significant disconnect between Wyze's brand promise and the actual customer experience.
The Bigger Picture: Security Risks to Consider
My individual performance challenges underscore broader concerns within the Wyze ecosystem. Beyond isolated glitches, home security cameras present substantial privacy and safety risks:
System Reliability: Unreliable event recording and frequent offline drops can result in intruders or incidents going unrecorded.
Alert Delivery: Delayed or missed notifications can hinder homeowners' ability to respond to immediate threats.
Cloud Dependency: Failures in the app server or caching can lead to centralized cloud outages, rendering the entire home setup vulnerable.
Privacy Vulnerabilities: Feed leaks pose the risk of exposing sensitive indoor footage to unauthorized viewers.
Final Verdict: Are Wyze Budget Security Cameras Worth the Trade-Off?
While Wyze has undeniably disrupted the smart home market by making security hardware accessible to a broad audience, low initial costs are inconsequential if the hardware fails when it is most needed.
If you are contemplating Wyze for primary security needs, please consider the following:
1. Do not depend on them for critical entry points.
2. Be ready for hands-on troubleshooting and potential cloud outages.
3. Explore local-only or higher-end hardware alternatives if 24/7 reliability is essential.
Reliability is paramount for peace of mind. Until Wyze addresses its foundational cloud stability issues and enhances its warranty support, prospective buyers should exercise caution.

I purchased this to keep an eye on my cats while at work, I must say I am impressed and will purchase another. It was easy to set up, easy to use, nice video quality, adjustable from your phone, but I haven't figured out how to put the microchip or whatever its called in, and I keep it plugged in because it shuts off, so I haven't figured out the battery yet. Also I had to purchase a subscription because I have to still figure out the chip thing.

I bought this rotating camera mainly to keep an eye on my dog and see what he was up to while I was away from home. I love being able to move the camera around and check different areas of the room. It gives me peace of mind knowing I can check on my dog anytime and make sure he’s safe. It’s been really useful and I’m happy with my purchase!

It's a good camera overall, but not for a dark baby room
I bought this to keep an eye on our 1-year-old in her nursery, because the product material says it's a good fit for baby. For the price, the picture quality and setup are fantastic, but parents should keep a couple of things in mind:
1. Night Vision Red Light: The built-in IR LEDs emit a noticeable red glow in the dark. If your baby is sensitive to light, it will catch their eyes. Turning off the IR light in the app will result in a completely black screen unless there is ambient light in the room, but this is not common when the baby is sleeping.
2. Rotation Sound: The pan motor isn't silent. To prevent it from making noise while she sleeps, we had to turn off "Motion Tracking" so the camera stays in a fixed position.
Great camera for general home use or daytime monitoring. For nursery use, it works best if you keep it static and don't mind the red IR glow at night.

Refurb is glitchy and came with wrong accessories
Ordered a refurbished pan cam v3 unit. It came with the wrong power cord, should have been a 90° connector for the swivel mount on the pan cam but came with a straight cord. I needed it up right away so I rigged it up and mounted it and can’t return it…I’m not climbing that ladder again. Also, this unit is buggy. It works but then is constantly buffering and connecting even though it’s literally six feet away from my WiFi router. I have other wyze cams that work fine over 50’ away from my WiFi. I like all my wyze cams except this one. I recommend staying away from the refurbished units!

Didn’t Expect to Love It This Much — But I Do!
I bought this eye camera on a whim, thinking it would be a fun gadget. It turned out to be one of the most useful tools I own. I used it during a DIY project, and the footage was so clear that I could zoom in and see tiny details I missed in real time.
If you’re on the fence, don’t be. This is one of those rare products that actually does what it promises.
I have it set to detected sound the minute it heard these unwelcome guest speak in our alley at 4 am it started recording. They notice the camera follow them and avoided my vehicles. These same guest came around a few mnths ago and they know when the batteries are dead in the other brand, I caught them this time!!!

Wise cam pan v3 out/ indoor camera was a great purchase for me. I recently moved and had someone break into my car didn’t take anything because I was having issues with my alarm so had it unlocked but it was ransacked but that was a blessing didn’t steal my car anyway these cameras are great buy to kind of keep crime from happening for me I love them haven’t had no issues they’re clear and you can zoom in on your phone to see the images up closer storage is up to 14 days. Battery I don’t know I bought extra long cords I keep mines plugged upset up was easy and for each camera you purchase you do have to pay monthly fee wish is under $10 for me pick your own package to fit your budget. They do swivel so you have a wide range of coverage I have mines outdoors I also bought extended mounts so my camera could hang out a little bit more. Pictures clear at night and during daylight. Bought this back in May 2025 and its still going! good recording quality, a little pricey on the subscription but you also get a lot with it. so I understand. Caught the neighbors kid finally biff it on his motorscooter way back. super clear day and night vision, compared to Arenti cameras.
.
the mounting back was pretty easy to install, a place for the wire so it doesn't hinder the turn. Motion follow is nice but it does delay when someone runs by.
.
over all, I'm super happy with this camera. Will be getting a second one for my backyard.

If you're looking for a camera with features and quality, look no further!

-Price
-Ease of use
-Overall Quality
-App / features
CONS:
-A.I. detection needs improvement.
-Sound when moving
-Video Quality when camera moves
PROS
I just want to start off by saying that for the price, these are EXCELLENT cameras. I have 3 Wyze Pan Cam V3's so far and have plans to purchase more for my mother's house in the near future.
Starting off with price, these are pretty inexpensive units, considering the amount of features packed into them. There are certainly much higher quality units out there, but the cost will increase dramatically for them as well. In my opinion, you get far more than you pay for with the Pan Cam V3 making them well worth their low cost.
It does not get much easier to get going than it is with these guys. Just plug in the included usb cable to the included wall adapter, download the app and after just a few minutes of setup, you’re up and running. The camera can be used indoors or outdoors. If using indoors, find your suitable location, plug it in and go. The camera is very quiet when panning, to anyone in the room with it. I will say though, that when watching back recorded videos, you can definitely hear the movement, which I was surprised to find. More on this in the CONS section.
The build quality of the camera is good. It does not feel cheaply made at all (especially considering the low price point). Overall video quality is good as well, but there are some slight issues I have run into when panning (see the CONS section for details). Audio quality is good as well. I can make out voices and have conversations with anyone outside when needed, so the 2 way audio works well in that regard.
The app has a TON of options. You can go basic or really dive into them for more control if you choose. I like that you have this flexibility. You can set various sensitivity options for detection events, event recording, alarm settings, notifications, etc. Some features are paid only features, but at the most basic level, as long as you have an SD Card (not included) installed you will be able to go back and watch videos of saved events.
CONS
A.I. options are available within the app for this camera and I would say that this is the biggest opportunity for improvement. The A.I. options allow you to select event triggers for things like cars, people, pets, package detection, etc. In my experience, cars have been detected as pets, pets as cars, pets as packages and so on. The A.I. in this respect has a ways to go still. I have also experienced the camera get confused and just “staring” at the wall next to where it is mounted. It detected shadow movement from sun/trees and locked in on it for hours at times. It took me a while of playing with detection settings to get past this for the most part, but it will still occasionally happen from time to time. The app does have the option for you to give feedback on what was in the detection event, such as people, animals, cars, etc. I presume this will help them improve the detection as time goes on, so this is promising.
The other big issue I have is with the “waypoints” You can select them based on where you want the camera to stop when it is in “pan and scan” mode. I have mine at the center of my house lengthwise. I have a waypoint that covers from the left end of the house to the center, then a 2nd that covers from the center to the right end of the house. You can adjust these waypoints up, down left and right as needed to get the best coverage to suit your needs. NICE! The issue I have found though, is that over time, these waypoints can wander so to speak. I can have them set and check a few weeks later and the camera’s left most point will be further to the left that where it was set for example. Or I can set at a specific height, and later the camera angle is higher or lower than where I had set it. A minor annoyance, as you have to go back in and re-set your waypoints, but it’s enough to be worth mentioning. Again though, for the price point this is definitely something I am ok dealing with.
My other issues are with video and audio when panning. When you pan, you can audibly hear (in recorded video, not in person) the camera moving on one camera it sounds like a woodpecker, lol. A minor annoyance again, as I am really more interested in the video from these, not the audio but again, I thought it’s worth mentioning. Video quality, when panning also goes blurry. Once the pan stops, the video clears within a second or so. Something I also thought worth mentioning for those considering these cameras, but I once again restate that for myself, given the price point I can deal with this minor annoyance.
Overall, despite the minor gripes listed here, I absolutely love these cameras. I have 3 so far and will definitely be adding more to the collection for sure. If you’re looking for inexpensive, good quality cameras for some additional peace of mind, these are absolutely worth every penny!

Worth every penny!
I really like this Wyze Pan cam. Only had it a couple days and really am impressed with the clarity and features for the price. I have NestCams and the original DropCams and they require a more expensive subscription and give you less features. Time Lapse videos are fun to make but DropCam no longer allows you to make them or any custom video clips. Wyze however allows you to do them plus also allows you to use a MicroSD card to store all video and photos plus use 24/7 continuous recording. Also the pan feature and your ability to set way points is very nice. Hands down for $39 this camera is far better than any $129 NestCam. I intend on buying more very soon. Watch videos of Wyze cams on Youtube and decide. I included a Time Lapse video of my Piranha aquarium. I filmed an hour’s worth with 3 second intervals and it lasts 40 seconds. All stored on the MicroSD card. Remember to purchase one. If anything should change I will let you all know.

January 2026 update - 2 to 5 stars
Update after a couple months of use: The camera continues to have connection issues. It goes offline now almost every other day. I do a hard reset and it does come back. Unfortunately, it's hard to do that reset when you're not home - and really need the camera. I will update this review after more research and contact with Wyze.
I've used this camera now for a couple of months. I paid $40 plus tax and it was delivered quickly. Pretty satisfied for the price. There are so many features you need to study the manual. I set up 3 "pan" locations for the camera to check and that works. Privacy mode works well too.
Take a look at the video and you can see the camera in action. I have the sensitivity set to about 35% so it doesn't trigger too easily. At 100% sensitivity any shake or swing will trigger it.
Okay, so problems? Well, I'v had a connectivity issue several times. It seems to just go offline even though it is located about a foot from the mesh router. Now it's been connecting well for a few weeks so maybe a transient problem.
I also have a couple Wyze version 3 cameras that work well. Don't really know why you would buy the version 3 when this camera does it all and can see 360 degrees around. This camera really is versatile. I'll probably get another one for the broad coverage it offers.
I use sim cards in my cameras so I don't have subscription costs. Should Wyze start a mandatory monthly subscription plan I will switch to another brand with none of those costs.
January 2026 update: I changed my review from 2 to 5 stars as the camera bugs are worked out. I find the camera to be very reliable now and it's still going strong. I now have 17 WYZE cameras on different properties. I also upgraded to - yes - a $100 a year subscription that covers up to 20 cameras. Yes, I still use SD cards but I like the extras included with the upgrade plus the cloud storage. Should your camera get stolen or destroyed the video will still be in the cloud.

Fantastic as a basic camera. Requires subscription for advanced features.
Let me see if this will be the 1st review :) For the price this is an excellent basic camera.
Aesthetics: this looks very cool. Two small white boxes connected via a side stick. They send some stickers you can put on the base. It does not look like a camera when in privacy mode.
Installation: I was up an running in less than 10 minutes. Most of the time was to download the app and do a firmware upgrade. Plug it in, install app and follow directions. This is the easiest camera setup I have seen.
The down side is it requires a 2.4gh network; I do have some old devices so had previously enabled it. If not you have to do that on your wife router as it is turned off by default on the newer routers. One minor quirk is during the setup if asks you to scan a QR code in app using the camera. Just hold your phone at least 6-7inches away from the camera to scan. It will not scan if you are closer.
It notified that there was a newer version that took a few minutes to update and I was done with setup.
Functioning: Very impressed with the clarity of videos. This can be mounted outdoors (but requires a SD card cover and a separate (water proofed )power that is yet to available for purchase. The power cable is a micro SD (wish they had gone with USB-C) that attaches to the camera; with other end of cable being a USB female.
* It rotates 360 degrees horizontally and 180 degrees vertically. However the vertical range is more like 150 degrees. The base of the camera begins to cut (obstruct) the picture beyond 150 degrees (see my third picture)
* Two way voice is loud and crisp.
* Motion detection and tracking works great.
* * Local SD card slot to record video/audio. supports up-to 256 GB.
* you can take photos of camera from the app that will save to your phone.
* It also has a siren that you can turn on using app and it is relatively loud.
*added a night shot of same area and you can see difference. The camera does not have any light, but uses infrared and image is pretty good. This is taken during with all lights off with blinds closed (i.e., nothing is visible to naked eye.)
But can also view feed on the Alexa app, with limited functionality. Alexa could not put camera to privacy mode or turn it on.
Privacy Mode: this requires a special mention. On most other cameras you need to put a towel over it or unplug cameras completely. This is a fantastic feature, which when enabled, turns the camera 180 degrees down and voice is muted too. Many times I forget to turn on the cameras before I leave and this solves the problem as it can be kept on all the time, just put it in privacy mode when not in use.
But one quirk to this is camera still displays the last picture/frame. I wish it would go dark or to a white screen. Wyze, can you please fix this in a firmware update. I don't want to display the last image camera was looking when put into privacy mode.
This is where all the good (read free) stuff ends. This is when it dawned on me as to why they sell it at such a competitive price.
* Recording to cloud and getting alerts requires $20 annual subscription (cam plus). Not sure how much storage you will get. There is no option for you to change cloud storage to something you already own (like box or google drive)
* for $4 a month you can get professional monitoring, i.e.., someone at Wyze will monitor your camera and alert your or police if an intrusion is detected. May be useful when you are away for extended periods of time.
* There are other perks you get when you subscribe to Cam-Plus; since I don't plan on subscribing I did not investigate further.
For me this solves the purpose as I need a camera to keep an eye on the sink that sometimes backups up and overflows. Whish they let would let you configure your own cloud storage options, but that is not their business model. However this is still a buy recommendation from me. You will not be disappointed.
