Small, portable hand recorder

Small compact recorder, perfect for students or for up-and-coming journalists. You can actually use it for music as well because it does have the stereo XY microphone configuration, which is perfect for live bands and stereo sound.

It has a full featured transport mechanism fast-forward play rewind and also Mark specific areas that you want. It has a removable SD card so you could store as much as you like in it and removable AA batteries. It also has a 5 V USB-C power input so you can power it via USB if you like.

One of the neat things that also has a little speaker on it so you can listen to monitor to make sure that you’re recording came out perfect it is just a monitor speaker. Nothing spectacular, but it works fine

It is super easy to use and it fit your hand really nice

XV1-R with Insta360 X5 camera… USB-C a no-go

I bought this to use as a USB-C audio interface with an Insta360 X5 camera. The features and specs are nice, and it’s a good alternative to Zoom and Tascam. However, it did not work via the USB-C connection. After about 3 seconds of recording with the X5 connected to the XV1, it stops with the following message on the X5 screen: “Stop Recording! Audio data anomaly, Please check the currently connected audio device.” I can connect successfully via the 3.5mm output of the XV1. But, I can also do that with my old Zoom H5 recorder. I was trying to utilize the 32bit float of the XV1. All new cables, and tech support was not helpful (nobody familiar with this application). Anyway, I returned the XV1, but it seemed like a nice recorder - probably fine for a more general application (thus the 4 stars).

Perfect for Capturing Music—Not Background Noise

I picked up this Xvive XV1-R Portable Stereo Recorder as a Christmas gift for my brother. He plays acoustic guitar (and he’s really good), and he’s been teaching his kids to play as well. They occasionally do little shows and mini concerts, and he likes to record them.

When he uses his phone, it picks up everything—background noise, shuffling feet, random real-life sounds. The idea behind this recorder was better directionality, true stereo recording, and higher-quality audio. According to him, it absolutely delivers.

Sure, there’s fancier and more expensive gear out there, but this hits the sweet spot for a thoughtful gift that doesn’t destroy your budget.

A few things we both liked:

Tripod mounting is a big plus. It makes setup easy and keeps the recorder stable.

It runs on AA batteries, which I’m totally fine with—especially since lithium batteries can be annoying if they sit unused for long periods.

It can also be powered via USB-C, so you have options.

Getting started is fast: power it on, press one button, and you’re recording. No menu-diving required.

Just note that it does require a microSD card for recording. That’s actually a positive in my book—the audio files are stored digitally and easy to move or archive. You’re also not limited to just recording and removing the card. The recorder has a line-level output, so it can double as a playback device and feed directly into a mixer or other audio equipment.

My brother’s overall feedback is that this recorder has way more features than he realistically needs—but that’s not a complaint. He’s enjoying experimenting with the settings and learning how different environments affect his recordings.

In my video, I demo it on a tripod, and the backlight makes the screen hard to see on camera. Don’t let that fool you—it looks perfectly fine in real life. The main thing I wanted to show was how quickly you can get up and running.

Bottom line:

This is a capable, easy-to-use recorder that punches above its price. Great for musicians, families, or anyone who wants clean audio without a steep learning curve.

Not all that impressive. Volume very low but clear.

I'm not gonna lie. I am a bit disappointed. I have Xvive products, such as the IEM ear monitors and love them. However, this recorder is lacking. The sound quality is clear but very weak volume. The built-in speaker is almost worthless. Even when turned up to 100% it's not even as loud or clear as your speaker on your smart phone. It's almost unusable. When I transfer the SD Card into my computer, I am able to get the volume up enough to hear but I have to really push it to get any volume out of it. I'm not impressed at all. The unit is well built and solid. I'll give it that. The size is a bit bulky compared to others. The battery life seems adequate. The first SD Card I installed and tried to format caused the whole right side of the recorder to get hot. I shut it down right away and let it cool down. I was afraid it was going to catch fire. I used another brand SD Card and it worked ok. I think there are better recorders out there for the money.

Handy On-The-Go Tool

Pretty handy for on the go recordings and at a good price. Hand held size, easy to use with one hand. Can be posted up in the room during band practice and set to roll to capture any new ideas and licks that come to mind. I use mine when I don’t have access to the studio and when I don’t want to take up storage on my phone. Stereo recording and the quality is great!

Comes with flimsy protective pouch that is too small

Records and functions well but does not come with protective case to move between locations. Other XVIVE products come with EVO cases to protect them but this one came with a thin leatherette (pleather) pouch that is too small to fit the recorder (see photo). Flimsy and will not protect it against any kind of impact or dust.

Pleasantly Surprised

I work full time in music technology. I bought this recorder after limited experience with the Xvive brand. I was pleasantly surprised with the build quality and ease of use of this recorder. The buttons are easy, menu settings are simple, recordings sound good, and the line-in and line-out recording jacks are a nice inclusion. I've used other recorders before, and feel this one is comparable to many of them. My only concern with recorders like this is the freestanding microphones. I always worry they'll snap off. These seem durable, and while I wouldn't recommend dropping the recorder down on the microphones, the mics seem sturdier than a different recorder I own that cost over 2x as much as this one. They will hold up to normal use.

Ergonomic, high-quality, portable

I am a photojournalist, ordered the @xvive_audio after seeing it at NAMM 2025. I am familiar with the company as I own a wireless guitar transmitter. I tested the XV1-R before doors open at Astra Lumina, where the music is MAGNIFICENT.

In this video, I compare the GoPro, iPhone and XV1-R sound recorded. The device is sleek and comfortable to operate with one hand and I love that it has different presets/ settings for different environments.

Personally, I love the ergonomic design.
