Solid camera for high dB environments - like drums with a PA!

I wanted a video camera that can tolerate high dB levels, like my DRUMS..... This is the one. The video quality is outstanding, the microphone levels are adjustable by a potentiometer (knob) and with good lighting, you'll get crisp, detailed and lifelike images. I started with it set to 1080P-60 and the video is superb. The 4K video is super sharp. I had a 64G micro SDXC card and on the 1080P setting, I could get something around 11 hours of recording time. On 4K it's around 3 hours and change. Nothing to complain about. I bought a 128G micro-SD XC and, of course, doubled the recording time across the board.

Good audio, disappointing video

I was expecting to use this for high-quality video for promotional purposes. Although the audio is pretty good, the video is just not up to snuff. Performance in low light is particularly bad, with poor adjustment to lighting, grainy images with banding. I used this in a restaurant lounge and it could not cope with some backlighting. I used it in a more brightly lit room and it was better.

Key points:

- Screen is tiny. It's difficult to see your subject, especially in low-light conditions. Tedious to set the zoom level.

- Battery life is absurdly low. It takes two AA batteries which last about an hour. You will need to plug a cable (not included) into a charger (not included) to ensure you can capture an entire set. (They could have at least included a cable.)

- Multiple video quality options allow you to extend card capacity, including down to 720p.

- Pocket size device is very portable

- Includes multiple video modes like Jazz Club for expected lighting, which I did not find useful.

- Audio quality options to manage capacity

- Auto or manual gain control

- Five zoom levels. I assume these are digital zoom. The widest is super wide but the highest zoom is not going to get you very close. The highest zoom is probably comparable to a 50mm lens on an SLR.

- There is a feature to cut lows in the audio to filter out pops and wind noise, but I haven't tried it. It will filter out anything in those frequencies, so would also cut bass in music. Probably OK for voice/podcast.

- Standard mini phone jacks for headphones and extension mic

- Picks up a lot of background noise, not very directional.

My Galaxy 24+ phone performs much better. I took video of the same set using both the Zoom and my phone and the phone outperformed it for video and had higher gain for audio (the Zoom was set on Auto), though the Zoom might give a little more stereo separation.

It also underperformed my old Canon VIXIA camcorder, although the camcorder was much more expensive when it was new.

Firt pic is the zoom 2nd is the Chinese cam

There is no doubt that sound quality for a small unit like this is unparalleled sound is great.

picture quality is definitely NOT 4-K that is soo misleading, this is not a cheap item specially in some country's therefore I feel this its misleading and a rip of.

i recorded our band practice with the Zoom and with a Chinese camcorder side by side, at the same time, even a cheap Chinese camera provides better picture quality very disappointed with the zoom Q2n-4K

Great sound, cool camera

I play acoustic guitar, sing and have done YouTube for years, just for fun. This camera is cool. Easy to use, great sound, decent picture. A bit better than my phone, for sure.

I had to buy a micro sd card to usb converter, as my laptop does not have standard sd or micro sd card reader. Odd, as it's a new hp laptop and my 10 year old hp had a card reader.

Anyway, love this little camera. Used it for an open mic night too. Thumbs up 👍

Does What it Does Well...

The first instruction in the "Quick" users guide is put in the memory card and the batteries. This brings up several issues. The unit does not come with any memory card and you really need to purchase the correct 128GB Ultra MicroSDXC for optimal use of this gadget. It's no surprise that the unit does not come with batteries and you should put batteries in place BUT you really don't want to use batteries if you use this gadget for any period of time. You need the AC wall adapter (or a usb charger) and the cable which is also used to connect to your computer. The unit does not come with any of this and, the cable in particular, is essential. Without it, taking videos with this gadget is pointless. Make sure you get the correct cable because micro b? is not very much used anymore so it is easy to order the wrong cable which I did. If you want to use external XLR mics to make videos that have studio quality sound, you will need an audio adapter/mixer and the cables required for that. You can see in the attached video that the internal mic does well for the intended use of this video camera; which is to capture raw live practice or perfomance on the fly. Of course at this price point, there is no flip screen but the attached video was all done by approximating where the subjects would be and then, if nessesary adjusting the fov from the video editor on the computer.

I would have given 5 stars if Zoom would have charged $40 more and included the cable, AC charger and a memory card. You will also need a tri-pod if you don't already have one and it's a nice jesture for the manufacturer to include a cheap desk top tri-pod so the user can have what they need to get started. To clarify Zoom did not include any of this.

Had high hopes but just ok

Seems like a cool $200 product for short distance stuff but awful for anything at the distance. Pics attached playing back on my 4K Tv. Everything all fuzzy and no detail. This was recorded at 1080 60fps to conserve battery since 4K lasted like 5min on double AA.

Very Disappointed - Camera is Terrible in Low-Light Situations

I'd been a GoPro devotee for quite some time but gave my GoPros to my son to use in his Public Affairs role.

I purchased 3 of these units to use in videoing the bands I play in, primarily due to my experience with another Zoom product (Zoom H2n). There are a number of reasons I'm disappointed in this camera:

1. Viewfinder. This, at best, only gives you the ability to frame your shot. There are no details available as the viewfinder's output quality reminds of a terrible 8-bit video game.

2. Output. The concerts I've attempted to capture - like most - are performed in low-light situations. I've found the output from this camera is terribly grainy to the point that it can't be remedied in post.

3. Build quality. A viewfinder in one of the three cameras became washed-out while taking video of a concert last night. The viewfinder went from barely useful to useless.

One redeeming quality - as with most Zoom products, the recorded sound quality is terrific, and prevents my review from being a one-star review.

AWFUL picture quality

I have been using this camera to record my band. While the sound is good, the picture quality is the worst of any camera I've ever owned. Blurry, hardly discernible video. And that's true recording outside or inside. Would not recommend that you waste your money on it.

Product works great

This camera has endured some tough times and is still kicking. Got to say! It's a hell of a competitor to GoPro. Great quality for such a small camera.

Horrible battery life, can't see what you're shooting for selfies, audio quality is good, but...

So close, but so far.

First the positives: small format, easy to carry, good quality audio.

Now the negatives.

1. If you are using this for selfies, you cannot see the video screen, nor the record button, so it's hit or miss.

2. The camera is supposed to be 4k, but my Canon Vixia Mini which is 1080 is clearer and crisper. The Zoom has a lot of static in the image, especially against solid colored walls, that make it appear as if little gnats are swarming all over the place.

3. The deal killer for me is the battery life. It is ATROCIOUS! I put a new set of Duracell batteries in and a day later, after about 55 minutes of total recording time, they are dead. This is a camera that you really need to be able to plug into an outlet because the battery life is simply horrible. I don't know how Zoom can show people filming concerts with this thing when the batteries go dead so quickly.

I upgraded the firmware from 1.10 to 2.01 and the battery life was even worse. Ugh!

The verdict for me is, average camera, good sound, horrendous battery life. Save yourself the trouble and find a better option. Even my Canon VIXIA Mini is easier to use and holds battery life much, much, much longer, with a better quality image. And with the Canon--and many other cameras--the screen can be flipped up or out so you can actually see what you're recording.

Zoom missed the mark with the Q4N.

Sound Quality is great and Video Quality is cool but very bad in dark light situation

Sound quality is great, you can use your headphones to be able to adjust sound levels and video quality is great too, it is really 4k camera but i use 1080p because i can save more space on my memory card, i can be able to edit easily and export quickly for my Youtube channel and i dont want it to burn up. But it does not have a camra stability so you should buy a tripod or gimbal for that smooth cinematic video. And dont use Auto in any of the settings.

Third Time is the Charm

I have an old Zoom 2 audio recorder and have been very happy with it and still use it to this day. I have an earlier version of the Q2N. The prior version was okay but there were issues. The manufacturer apparently listened to the feedback and the Q2N-4K Handy Video Recorder literally addressed and solved every legitimate issue. [Battery Life, recording clip length, using the right size and type Micro SD, and unexpected recording cut offs.] The result is a superior product. I use this one to record very different types of music from church choirs with and without accompaniment, British Brass Bands and live jazz in concert settings. The sound and video reproduction in all of these areas is excellent. The battery life is more than acceptable. I have had it record a rehearsal nearly two hours long on just the internal batteries. The recording time is longer when I can stop the video between sets. The lens angle on this is slightly less than the earlier version, but it still allows the unit to be placed close to the stage, and covers the entire stage with slightly less 'fish eye' distortion. This is an improvement. The sample video was recorded just more than four feet from a 25 ft stage front, sitting on a table and still the top and both ends of the stage are visible. The demo is recorded at 720, considerably less than the highest resolution. You will need head phones to appreciate the sound on the nine second demo clip.

Great Audio and Video

Ok where do I start, oh I know...here's what comes in the box:

-Zoom Q2N4K

-Guide/Warranty Info

-Lens Cap and Lens Hood

-1 pair of AA batteries

What's left? Well for starters you're going to need a micro sd card, I recommend visiting Zoom's site and viewing their list of tested compatible cards. I went with the Delkin 64gb - V30 - UHS - I card (DDMSDW66064G). Suits my needs for now as I'm just getting started.

Cables. The one you'll probably need the most is the micro USB to USB cable, chances are you might already have an extra one especially if you're an Android user. Micro HDMI to HDMI is also useful. Lastly a couple 1/8in audio cables, one for incoming and the other for outgoing audio. The external in is where the Zoom shines as you have the option to record between 44.1k 16bit audio and 48k - 96k 24bit audio, and the audio is clean.

The mics within the unit also sound great, did a test run in the car with the stereo on low volume playing music with heavy 808 bass, not only was my voice clear but the background music was well pronounced including the bass which still had a nice round sound even at low volume.

Videos. Well this is the part where I’m still learning. So far, I’ve been recording using 720p the most to maximize space of my card. Study the settings and make sure your subject is properly lit to those settings, and you’ll be fine. For those looking for the best quality video in 1080p and 4k buy the fastest recommended UHS - II card.

Bottom line. This is a great unit, which would probably cost a lot more if it had things like wifi and bluetooth. Not a deal breaker for me, don’t really need it as I’m generally shooting then connecting to edit, upload, airdrop, etc.

5 stars all the way. Took my Instagram and YouTube beat videos to the next level sound wise, while also keeping great video quality.

Edit: Forgot to mention, you can power it via usb, when I’m not using battery power I use my Anker charger. Also helpful when trying to save batteries while plugged to a computer.

Also, included some screen grabs from some of my vids so far as I’m certain the’ll be some compression on the video I included with this review.

It's OK but Costs Too Much for what it does

Looks weird I am constantly reminded of Howard the duck but build quality is ok. Image quality is better than the previous version as this does 4k 30fps. The 4k looks good in well lit conditions but gets grainy and noisy in low light. The 2.8 aperture is nothing to brag about. The white balancing struggles a little bit trying to find the best scene mode but not too much and if you point it at different light sources it will adjust then you can shoot or make the changes manually. Contrast is a little high but not bad there is no exposure adjustment and you can forget about iso or aperature adjustments as well. The colors are ok not to saturated not flat either. It's all ok and pretty acceptable nothing outlandishly bad.

Sound quality is good its clear crisp virtually no noise during playback but the recording level is on max for voice recordings. But this is geared towards musicians and they will be producing much louder sounds than someone just talking so in that sense the recording volume level has a lot of room to play with. Otherwise the overall recording volume level isn't that much louder than most cameras. The video portion is a little behind. 4k 60fps is becoming the norm. A basic adjustment is you gotta be able to adjust the exposure. I would like fisheye removal on the wide setting. This camera will probably spend most of it's time on a tripod but image stabilization would have been great. If I'm taking this to a show or live event or anywhere really, I would like to take advantage of the audio recording capabilities without shaky footage.

The display screen is horrible. It looks like it's from a gameboy advance or something. The screen resolution is laughable. The cheapest action cameras have better displays. The battery life is short real short shooting in 4k. I think I got 30min give or take a couple minutes with the batteries it came with. It might do better with some duracells but rechargeables are the way to go. At least you can exchange batteries but exchanging batteries requires some fingernails to do so. A ribbon would have been nice. You can use a battery pack but that's just another thing to have to carry around.

Menu navigation is simple and straightforward love the quick access buttons on the sides and on the front. I get they are pitching this to musicians but with some updates and changes they can also easily pitch this to vloggers podcasters and youtubers or anyone who wants good sound with a good camera.

It feels like they just threw in 4k for the appeal to remedy the previous version without really going forward on the camera end. Don't just add a camera to say hey you don't have to carry around a camera we got one on our recorders now. 😮 Wouldn't hurt to make it waterproof. Not talkin scuba diving but rain or spills or a random kid rubbing their ice cream cone on your recorder because they think it makes for a nice hat would be great peace of mind. Swapping out batteries all the time is becoming a chore. You can't even charge the batteries in the device you have to take them out. Charge and record something most cameras are capable of would have been a simple thing they could have tossed in for better versatility but like I said this is a little behind the times. I don't feel its worth the price. Should be like $100. There are many action cameras out now that do a good job at recording just as good audio.

Definitely worth it!

Build Quality:

So far the device is made quite well. It has a heavier feel then the original Q2n and the buttons even feel better in comparison. It’s hard to explain but it makes the Q2n feel cheap because this seems more solidly built even though they share a very similar design.

Accessories:

The Windscreen from the previous model can also be fitted on the 4K as well. Just make sure you install the lens hood (included) before the windscreen this way it helps keep the fur out of the lens itself. Mind you, doing this outside on a windy day will almost guarantee the windscreen getting in the lens fov. It does help, especially if you like to keep a ceiling fan on high in the same room you may be doing a video in while using this camera. The lens hood and lens cap from the older Q2n is not compatible with the 4K model. The Mic stand adapter is though.

Audio:

I just want to touch on this for a sec as when you set it at the highest quality, windows computers may have an issue with it and not play any sound at all. Not sure if this is a driver/codec issue but Mac users won’t have this problem. iPad and iPhone users won’t have this problem either. Any other audio setting below the highest will work for Windows users just fine. Zoom has the best audio on a small camera I’ve ever heard before.

File type:

It’s .MOV and they will airdrop for you Apple users and work in iMovie without a problem. The Q2n is the same if you wanted to know.

Audio Line out:

It doesn’t mention the headphone jack doubling as a line out but I was successful in doing so. It doesn’t say on either model but the Q2n and the Q2n-4K both work, as long as I turned off “plug in power” in the settings and it was just as clear as my Zoom H2n Recorder which I normally use for this. [I’m referring to using the cameras as a Mic for gaming capture where the audio is direct line into my capture device]. You can use the headphone jack normally for headphones just fine and it has a volume adjustment. The Plug In Power is for external Mics that require power to operate them as you can input those into either model Q2n which will bypass the XY mics built in. There’s a separate Mic In 3.5mm jack for that on the cameras just below the headphone jack.

SD Card and Recording Times:

(with Max Audio) This camera will take up to a 256gb Micro SDXC card and when using an XC, it will record in a seamless recording. Only to stop when the card is full or you stop it yourself. If you use a SDHC (these are up to 32gb capacity), the files will be broken every 4gb.

128gb Card:

4K30/24fps=3hr 31min

1080p60fps=5hr 9min

1080p30/24fps=9hr 51min

720p30fps=20hr 50min

Camera Off 96k24bit WAV Audio=61hr 42min (highest quality)

I formatted my own card in the device to get those numbers. Video bitrate up to 76Mbps which is likely 4K mode and I can’t test whether it’s a constant or variable.

Lens:

A fixed focus 150 degree fisheye wide angle lens. f2.8/15.2mm. I did see a comment where they (Zoom) replied saying it’s 16mp, though I don’t see this anywhere on the website.

More:

Runs off 2AA batteries and it’s recommended you use Lithium as they will last much longer. Record times with various battery types are listed on Zooms website. You can power the device with a usb power supply and avoid AA batteries altogether.

Lens is a 150 degree wide lens and the older Q2n is a 160. The Q2n Lens can easily be replaced but I’m not so sure about this one yet.

The Q2n-4K isn’t compatible with Gimbals and doesn’t offer any kind of image stabilization.

There isn’t any kind of optical zoom as it’s all digital and on 5 presets.

No still photos option. Of course you can always take a screen shot but this could easily be added in a FW update. Mind you, they never added this to the previous model.

Same small screen. I wish they gave an option to turn off the selected settings displayed on screen to make the image fill the viewing space. The camera view is just so small with the current settings in the way.

Thanks for reading! Even if you already have the Q2n then this is definitely worth the upgrade. A camera that does 4K, Digital Recorder and Microphone! Plug in another Mic, listen live with headphones and even HDMI out to a tv/portable monitor while recording... Why not? You can’t go wrong with this at the current $199 price point.

A full video review will be on my YT channel at Para-holiX hopefully soon.

Questions then just ask. I may have left some out as it can be found on the Zoom website.

*Edit

A 55min file at 1080p/60fps will be 25gb with the highest audio as well.

*Update

If your video is blurry, it may be the device you’re playing back on. If it’s not the device then YT/Para-holiX and I have a video showing you how to replace the lens and focus it back if that’s your issue. We’ve done a video on the previous Q2n model as well.
